"Personal Best" Dance Competition

The Annual "Personal Best" Middle Eastern Dance Competition

Categories of the Competition.

There are several different categories for dancers to enter in the competition.  You can enter as many as you qualify for, but please do not enter below your current level of experience (you CAN enter a higher level, though).  Each category must be paid for.  Time limits will be STRICTLY enforced!  You can, of course, take less time.

Rising Star: This level is for the beginning performer, one who has never taught nor performed solo for money. This does not include troupe performances for money. Time limit 6 minutes.

Headliner: This level is for those dancers who have taught for less than two (2) years or performed solo for pay for less than two (2) years. Time limit 7 minutes.

Professional: This level is for those who have taught for more than two (2) years or performed solo for money for more than two (2) years. Time limit 9 minutes.

Troupe: Two (2) or more dancers performing together.  REGISTRATIONS MUST BE SENT IN TOGETHER. Time limit 7 minutes.

Folkloric: This category may be solo or troupe, in the case of those traditional dances usually performed in a group rather than as a solo in the category of origin.  To enter this category, the performance must present a form of middle eastern dance from a continuous historic cultural tradition (other than raqs-sharqi). Time limit 7 minutes.

Ethics Essay

Shakira would like to recognize a dancer who is able to negotiate the complicated world of dance and make decisions using sound ethical reasoning. So we created a unique category to help recognize this important part of the Middle Eastern Dancer's education.

Here is this year's essay topic.

The cut off date for Shakira's essay is July 16th. This is NOT a postmark date.  Essay entries can be emailed to safia_al_zarqa@yahoo.com. The essays are blinded and then submitted to Shakira who chooses the winning essay.  Winners are announced at the end of Competition on Sunday. There is no cost to enter this competition. You do not need to be present to win.
