Description & Uses

Hops are climbing plants that may reach over 20'.  The leaves are large, roughly textured, toothed, heart-shaped with three or five lobes and are dark green in colour.  the stems are tough and prickly-haired.  in colour they are green tinged with red.  A golden form with soft golden leaves is also known.  Plants carry either female or male flowers.  Female flowers are yellowish-green and cone like.

While hops are now usually associated with brewing, the young shoots may be steamed and eaten as a vegetable.
