          Egyptian Onion

Latin Name

     Allium cepa proliferum

Alternative Name

     Tree onion, Walking onion

Description and Uses

The egyptian onion forms a clump of small bulbs at the end of the flowering stem, as well as offsets at the base of the main plant.  The bulbs can be used like shallots and the offsets like spring or salad onions.

Cultivation

Plant egyption onions in spring or autumn by pressing the bulbs into the ground at 10" intervals.  They prefer full sun and respond well to rich soil.
