International Honor Society in Social Sciences

Eligibility Requirements

 

     Membership in Pi Gamma Mu is available only to those who are invited by our chapter based on the following minimum criteria:

  • Must be a junior, senior or graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania;
  • Must have earned at least 21 credit hours or completed 7 courses in the social sciences (defined by the international society to include history, economics/business, political science, sociology, anthropology, criminology, psychology, international relations, social work, social philosophy, education, and human geography, and interdisciplinary programs with social science foundations);
  • Must have earned an overall GPA of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale);
  • Must have earned a GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in all social science coursework;
  • Must belong to the upper one-third of his/her entire (junior, senior or graduate student) class;
  • Must have no failed grades;
  • Must have no unremoved or unjustified Incomplete grades: 
  • Must be of good moral character (i.e., should not have been subject to any form of disciplinary action);
  • Must have completed and submitted the Life Membership Application Form;
  • Must have paid the required one-time life membership dues of the Society and the Chapter; and
  • Must be elected to life membership by majority vote of the chapter Executive Council. 

     Membership in Pi Gamma Mu is also open by invitation to members of the social science faculty and alumni of the University of Pennsylvania who have distinguished themselves in their respective disciplines upon the written nomination to the Council by at least one of its members.

      All elections to membership shall be made by Council at a regular meeting called for this purpose by the President. Any individual elected and inducted into membership, whether as a student, faculty, alumni, or on an honorary basis, shall remain a Pi Gamma Mu member for life.
