2006 marks the Pekin Bantam Club of Australia's 50th Golden Anniversary year and the Club is excited about the possibility of over 500 Pekins in their various and wonderful colours at the Annual Show in July later this year.
The show will be held in the poultry pavilion at Armidale Showground on July 22 and 23 with a special presentation dinner featuring guest speakers and several very early members of the Club.
Exhibitors have supported the annual fixture in the past travelling long distances to attend. The Goldebn Anniversary Show in an extra incentive and already fanciers from Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia have indicated they will be exhibiting at this spectacular event.
This year's judges will be Eian Rayner (Launceston, Tasmania) and Peter Smith (Tamworth, NSW) and are sure to make it a great weekend for breeders and fanciers alike.
The Pekin Bantam Club of Australia was first formed as the Pekin Bantam Club of NSW later being renamed to reflect the true membership of the Club which covered every State and Territory in Australia. The name adopted was The Pekin Bantam Club of Australia (Incorporating the Pekin Bantam Club of NSW)
The original meeting was held on April 13, 1954 attened by four Pekin fanciers being Messrs J. Deveraux, B. Owens, R. Lindsay and R. Winsor with apologies from Mr E. Polle. Within two years there were over 50 members from 4 states - SA, NSW, QLD, Vic. and even another country, New Zealand!
The first show held saw only five colours two being in the A.O.C. classes which were Blue and the magnificent Cuckoo, the other three colours were of course Black, White and Buff. But over the last 50 years we have seen incredible improvement in type in the Pekin and also a vast number of new colours now available.
For over 50 years the Club has held its own shows with only a few shows being held in-conjunction with other clubs and their shows, one being in 1972 the club held its show alongside the Western Suburbs Softfeather Bantam Club and another was in 1973 with the Bantam Club of Newcastle at Newcastle.Originaly it was only a one day show but slowly became a two day event. Other clubs have held their shows under the same roof on the same weekend as the Pekin Club's show with great success such as the Ancona and Leghorn Clubs.
A huge list of trophies and cash specials along with the usual perpetual trophies have been donated and the Club is deeply indebted to those many fanciers and businesses who have already contributed and more have still been promised.
For more information on the history the Club as well and breeding, feeding rearing etc the second edition of the Pekin breeders' Handbook "The Australian Pekin Bantam" is exclusively available through the Club. (see advert in club listings at the back).
