The joint Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade companies based at Pear Tree have been here for almost 100 years. Originally formed within 12 months of each other (1919 and 1920 respectively), the companies provided uniformed youth work throughout the Great Depression and the Second World War. Times have changed somewhat but the mottoes of ‘Seek Serve and Follow Christ’ and ‘The Extension of Christ’s Kingdom’ among boys are as true today as they were in the early part of the 20th Century.

The 21st Century ‘Brigades at Pear Tree’ was formed in 1992 when the boys and girls came together realising that while tradition was important, more important was the support and outreach that could better be provided with mutual cooperation.

So while there is still a BB Company and a GB Company they are now inseparable. The joint company prides itself on modern youth work with a 21st Century outlook, where a multitude of activities are encouraged from summer camp to expeditions and from wacky-races to drama. Will the companies be here in another 100 years? Judging by the amount of young people on the roll at the present moment I should say the answer to that is ‘yes’.
