College Of The North Atlantic: Programmer Analyst Business Co-op 3yr

SEMESTER 1: In the first semester I completed a computer Hardware course, which further increased my knowledge (Technical Terminology) and in greater detail what each type of hardware is and what it does. I also completed a Visual Basic 5 Course, which gave us the student an introduction on how to program. The third computer course done in the first semester was a productivity tools course, which gave us a hands on experience of the power of Microsoft Office 97. We learned how to create a presentation, set up a database and how to use a spreadsheet program as well as using Microsoft Word.

SEMESTER 2: In the second semester I completed 3 more computer-related courses: Microsoft Access Programming, Web Security, and Windows 95. In the access programming I was taught how to design and program an access database, We learned how to make it user friendly and meet all of the needsof the employer. In our Web security course we were being taught about the different aspects of the Internet Web server security, firewalls, hacker prevention, Cryptography and the various types. As well as how to design and create a functional web page, I used some of these techniques to design this page. In our Windows 95 course we learned some advanced concepts in windows 95, and a bit of dos, we also learned how to troubleshoot problems and many ways of doing things in windows 95, such as Backups, and what certain files are used for!

SEMESTER 4: In My Forth Semester I completed 3 More Computer Courses, Fundamentals of Database Design. This course helped me understand how databases are created and the proper ways to set up the database for less errors and anomalies. We were also introduced to SQL (Structured Query Language). Another computer course I completed this semester was Systems Analysis and Design, This course shows the students the steps needed to be able to design a successful computer system that the programmer will be working on, and implementing. The Last computer course was a Programming Course, The Programming language we used was Borland C++ 5.02, This course was an introduction to Procedural Programming and the proper concepts needed to take programming to the next level, OOP (Object Oriented Programming). This Semester was one of the most interesting yet.

SEMESTER 6:This Semester has been one of the hardest semesters since I began the course. I had two programming languages to complete as well as two other computer courses. The Two Programming Languages were Object Oriented C++, This was quite a difficult course, There was a lot to cover in such a little amount of time. We were introduced to many concepts of OOP that I have to admit are of great importance to programming in general, I have been studying some MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes) in my own free time and I have to admit, If I never did that OOP course I would never understand what the MFC was referring to. I also completed another course in Visual Basic 6, This course introduced the student to some advanced concepts in Visual basic such as, drawing Graphs, handling dialog Boxes and some Database control. This was a very informative course, and a great Learning Experience. One of the other computer courses that I have completed was an extension of the systems course in semester 4. The last computer course that I completed was on Novell Netware 5, We had to set up and configure our own little Novell Netware Network and use all of the tools to complete the task. By the time we finished we had set up users, groups, print servers, and security for the entire network. this was a great course.

SEMESTER 8:This was the final semester before graduation, and was the busiest one yet. I completed 4 programming languages: Java Programming, Cobol Programming, Power Builder Programming, and Oracle Programming. Java was the most interesting language done this semester. Cobol is a very long program language. I had a bit having a bit of difficulty with this course. Oracle was also a very interesting course, because it taught us all of the different ways to work with databases, which will be greatly used in the workforce when I have to work with databases through applications being developed. While completing the semester, I was also working part time at Oceans Ltd. Working on a program that is to load a database using the decode program I developed there during my work term.

  SEMESTER 3, 5 AND 7 (WORK TERMS 1, 2 AND 3)

SEMESTER 3 AND 5 (WORK TERM'S 1 AND 2) I have completed my 1st and 2nd work terms. I was placed at the Public Service Commission. I had been working there for over 8 Months and really enjoyed Working there, I had been faced with a lot of different areas of the Computer field such as, Ordering parts in for people, upgrading systems, doing regular backups on the server, Access databases for various employees, and Program installations. As well as setting computers up for network access and Internet access. I really enjoyed working there because it helped to give me a greater understanding of what my future may be like in the work force.

SEMESTER 7 (WORK TERM 3) I have completed my third work term with Oceans ltd which is located on LeMarchant road. My main responsibility there was to assist in the development of a new Weather Display application. I was also the second of two programmers working on the project. My main duty was to modify a program, which was written to decode weather information gathered from various weather stations around the world, so that it could decode all of the relevant information. I completed this task and began working on the Graphical User Interface Prototype for the finished product. The decode program was written completely in C++, and is completely portable to Dos Linux/Unix and OS/2. This was a very valuable work term for me in that it helped expand my C++ knowledge, as well as my Systems Development experience.

Marine Institute Of Memorial University: Basic Survival Training (BST) MED A1 Endorsement

This course was funded by Ocean's Ltd. as a requirement for performing Offshore duties in data collection, and mooring Deployments/Recoveries. This course involved a variety of sections:

  1. Fire Fighting
  2. Life Raft/Boat Drills
  3. Helicopter Safety/Exiting a submerged Aircraft
  4. Proper usage of a SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus)

Marine Institute: WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information Sheet.

This course was also funded by Ocean's Ltd. as a requirement for performing Offshore duties. This Course involved a primarily how to correctly Create and interpret WHMIS Data sheets that I could run into in the workplace. These WHMIS sheets help ensure in the safety of all personel on the Vessel or rig.

  Marine Institute: H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide)

This course was also funded by Ocean's Ltd. as a requirement for performing Offshore duties. This course deals primarily deals with the detection of Hydrogen Sulphide, a highly lethal gas that is often found in oil related environments. We were trained in the usage or a variety of H2S detection equipment, and how to Interpret the results
