The Rahi, Servants of Makuta

Rahi are the servants of Makuta, bound to his will by the infected Kanohi they were. They perform the will of Makuta wherever they go, whether that will is finding and hindering Toa, guarding the Masks of Power (Great Kanohi), or just plain be a pain in the neck to who or whatever they see.

There are many Rahi, and infact the name Rahi refers to the animals of Mata-Nui, although the majority are infected by Makuta, and Rahi became the general term for the servants of Makuta. Some of the most known and numerous, and indeed the most dangerous and favorable of Makuta, are as follows:

The Kanohi (Great and Noble Masks of Power)

The fabled Kanohi, the Great Masks of Power, are hidden throughout the island of Mata-Nui. It is said that the power to possess and use them are held by none other than the legendary Toa. The powers are as follows:

Kanohi Miru -- Great Mask of Levitation -- Allows the user to stay suspended in air
Kanohi Hau -- Great Mask of Shielding -- Allows the user to be shielded from all attacks the user is aware of
Kanohi Pakari -- Great Mask of Strength -- Allows the user's strength to increase to tremendous size
Kanohi Kakama -- Great Mask of Speed -- Allows the user to cross great distances in a blink of an eye
Kanohi Kaukau -- Great Mask of Water-Breathing -- Allows the user to breathe underwater for a long period of time
Kanohi Akaku -- Great Mask of X-Ray Vision -- Allows the user to look into the earth and stone, and see what is hidden deep within

These masks were found by the Toa to put to their uses (More on that later).

There is another branch of the Kanohi, the Noble Masks of Power. These have depleted strength, although their still is a power. They are worn by the Turaga of the island.

Kanohi Huna -- Noble Mask of Concealment -- Allows the user to turn invisible
Kanohi Rau -- Noble Mask of Translation -- Allows the user to read anything
Kanohi Komau -- Noble Mask of Mind Control -- Allows the user to command others to do their bidding
Kanohi Matatu -- Noble Mask of Telekinesis -- Allows the user to move objects and porject force by thought
Kanohi Ruru -- Noble Mask of Night-Vision -- Allows the user to see in any level of darkness
Kanohi Mahiki -- The Noble Mask of Illusion -- Allows the user to create illusion to deceive an enemy or escape

These are the Kanohi. As you will learn in the future archives, these are not the only possible Kanohi, but only a handful in the pile.

The Toa Heroes

In the midst of the villagers plight, six mighty heroes appeared as from no place on the shores of Mata Nui, with only their name, their body, a mask and a purpose. They are as follows:

  • Tahu, Toa of Fire -- Wears the Kanohi Hau, Toa of Ta-Koro
  • Gali, Toa of Water -- Wears the Kanohi Kaukau, Toa of Ga-Koro
  • Pohatu, Toa of Stone -- Wears the Kanohi Kakama, Toa of Po-Koro
  • Onua, Toa of Earth -- Wears the Kanohi Pakari, Toa of Onu-Koro
  • Kopaka, Toa of Ice -- Wears the Kanohi Akaku, To of Ko-Koro
  • Lewa, Toa of Air -- Wears the Kanohi Miru, Toa of Le-Koro

Six heroes with one Destiny...

After arriving, they went to their villages and saw the Turaga.

The Koro and the Turaga

As in the previous archive entry, you learned that the Toa, after arriving in their Koro, their village, were introduced to the Turaga, the learned elders of the Koro. They hide many secrets that they have deep within them that only them know, and they seldom let one loose.

  • Turaga Vakama -- Turaga of Fire, Ta-Koro, wears the Kanohi Huna
  • Turaga Nokama -- Turaga of Water, Ga-Koro, wears the Kanohi Rau
  • Turaga Whenua -- Turaga of Earth, Onu-Koro, wears the Kanohi Ruru
  • Turaga Nuju -- Turaga of Ice, Ko-Koro, wears the Kanohi Matatu
  • Turaga Matau -- Turaga of Air, Le-Koro, wears the Kanohi Mahiki
  • Turaga Onewa -- Turaga of Stone, Po-Koro, wears the Kanohi Komau

The Turaga do not have the elemental powers of the Toa, but they have much insight on that subject, as their past is not yet determined and is known only to them. Each holds a staff that is the symbol of their leadership. This is no Kohlii staff, for one that sport is not invented yet, and two their staffs are carved in the likeness of their element. Vakama has a staff with a carving of a flame that glows with an invisible flame, Nuju has a pick used to sculpting ice, Onewa has a hammer on his, used to carve the stone found in the quarries of Po-Wahi (Wahi: The area surrounding the village). Nokama has a trident fixed to her staff, symbolizing her wisdom of the waters. Matau, elder of Le-Koro, holds a saw blade in his staff, used on the bramches of the dense jungles and forest of Le-Wahi. Whenua, Turaga of Earth, has a drill on the end of his staff used for drilling in the Great Mine of Onu-Wahi.

Now Nuju, the Turaga of Ice, has an unusual problem, one that remains hidden in the mists of the Before Time. He has lost the power of speech. He has completely lost his knowledge of the common language of Mata Nui, an numerous attempts to learn him have failed with him still talking in his various symbolic movements and whistles. It is believed by Matoro, the one Matoran who can understand Nuju, and is therefore with him all the time, that there is some grudge of evil on him that prevents him from speaking.
