Though not as common as many might think, it is probably what most people think of when they think about ghostly activity. The spirit or entity involved may have an attachment to the location or to someone at the location and thats why they are sticking around. This can happen for many reasons. They may have unfinished business or in some cases, if the death was traumatic, sudden or unexpected the spirit may not realize that they have died. They are human souls so if they had a kind and gentle personality in life, they will have the same traits as a spirit. Unfortunately the same goes if they were a not so kind person in life. These spirits are aware of their surroundings(at least to some extent) and may do things to try to get your attention. Except for a handful of very rare cases they can not and will not harm you. Their presence, however, can be frightening at times.

This is probably the most common type of reported phenomena. A popular way to describe this haunting is to compare it to an old film loop. An event, image or scene seems to be played over and over again through the years. They are often replayed as noises or sounds that have no explanations. Hearing "phantom" footsteps is a good example. Some occurrences or events seem to leave "psychic impressions"(energy seems to be imprinted) on certain locations, especially if something traumatic happened. If an apparition is reported it will not notice the living persons around it and will likely repeat the same actions each time. This is not a "conscious" haunting, meaning there is not a spirit that is actively haunting the area, only impressions or events being re-played.

The definition of the word poltergeist is "noisy ghost". In these cases there are reports of doors and cabinets slamming, tapping,knocking, electrical disturbances and objects being moved. The current theory behind this phenomena is that it is caused by someone living in the house. This person is referred to as the "human agent", which is typically an adolescent girl, though not in every case. It is believed that this person is unconsciously  causing the disturbances by psychokinesis(PK), which is the ability to manipulate objects with energy generated in the brain.

The theory that portals between realms or dimensions is not a new one. They are thought to be doorways in which spirits or entities gain access to our world. They could be spirits of humans who lived here in the past or they could be something else all together. It is still a very controversial theory.

Inhuman spirits are entities that never had a human body. No one knows where they come from exactly, they are often referred to as demons. They are the least common type of haunting, and also the worst. Inhuman entities are very strong and can wreak havoc, causing a lot of damage.
