A chalet full of diamonds
September 23, 2004
Source:laweekly.com

What happened? In plain English, 1999 was the year the RIAA began writing checks the record industry couldn’t cash.

For many years, when the RIAA was called upon to officially report on the growth of the recording industry, it did so only by responding to changes in the market. In 1958, at the dawn of the long-play record, it created the Gold award for $1 million in sales. This made sense. Pop music was changing from a regional, ephemeral phenomenon into an album-driven, culturally significant force. Similarly, when it introduced the Platinum award in 1976 — for 1 million units sold — it seemed a good response to the cresting wave of stadium rock.

It’s hard to attribute similar good judgment to the invention of the Diamond in March 1999. The Diamond award for 10 million units sold was nearly impossible to attain using anything short of exploitative measures — the most calculated crossover hits, yuppies’ favorites repurchased in muliple formats, new teen pop marketed to underage girls and dirty old men. Trumpeting these successes smacked of extreme arrogance. Three months after the Diamond’s invention, Napster was released, and it’s little wonder consumer response was so rapturous.

Here are the record industry’s all-time top sellers as listed at the unveiling ceremony for the Diamond sales award, listed in number of sales:

The Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 (Elektra) — 2/17/76 — 28 million copies

Michael Jackson, Thriller (Epic) — 12/1/82 — 26 million

Pink Floyd, The Wall (Columbia) — 12/8/79 — 23 million

Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin IV (Swan Song) — 11/8/71 — 22 million

Billy Joel, Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II (Columbia) — 6/28/85 — 21 million

The Beatles, The Beatles (Capitol) — 11/25/68 – 19 million

AC/DC, Back in Black (Elektra) — 7/21/80 — 19 million

Shania Twain, Come On Over (Mercury Nashville) — 11/4/97 — 19 million

Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (Warner Bros.) — 2/4/77 — 19 million

Whitney Houston, The Bodyguard (Arista) — 11/17/92 — 17 million

This is a solid list, not only of best-sellers, but of critically acclaimed landmarks in pop history. You might even argue that these specific albums mark a rough chronology of the evolution of pop music as an art form. But when we look at it chronologically, the list takes on a far different cast:

1968 — The Beatles, The Beatles (Capitol) — 19 million

1971 — Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin IV (Swan Song) — 22 million

1976 — The Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 (Elektra) — 28 million

1977 — Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (Warner Bros.) — 19 million

1979 — Pink Floyd, The Wall (Columbia) — 23 million

1980 — AC/DC, Back in Black (Elektra) — 19 million

1982 — Michael Jackson, Thriller (Epic) — 26 million

1985 — Billy Joel, Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II (Columbia) — 21 million

1992 — Whitney Houston, The Bodyguard (Arista) — 17 million

1997 — Shania Twain, Come On Over (Mercury Nashville) —
19 million

Looked at this way, the time line seems more like landmarks in the record industry’s slow descent into pabulum. These numbers are certainly evidence that, after 1980, the corporate music industry had given up on its golden age in favor of churning out purposely characterless dreck. The story behind Up!, Shania 27 29 Twain’s album following Come On Over, offers strong proof.

Released in November 2002, Up! marked the nadir of cynical pop. It was the masterwork of a well-seasoned team practically bioengineered to exploit — Shania Twain, a Canadian native who achieved breakout success by masquerading as a Nashville star, and her husband, a white South African named Robert “Mutt” Lange, the producer of an increasingly bland series of crossover stars, from Foreigner in the ’70s to Huey Lewis in the ’80s to Michael Bolton and Celine Dion in the ’90s.

Up! was intended as the pair’s triumph of commercial genius. Twain admitted that she deliberately rejected songs that smacked of introspection or personal detail. Up! was even released in three distinct mixes appealing to different target markets. The country-oriented “Green” mix featured banjo, pedal steel and fiddle; the pop-oriented “Red” replaced those with strings, guitars and keyboards; and the “Blue” international edition added a touch of Eurotrash beats.

Great art elicits passionate reactions, both positive and negative. It is idiosyncratic. It awakens a range of emotions — melancholy, joy, sadness, laughter. Up! studiously avoided every condition of great art. Having achieved their greatest possible triumph, the two retired to a chalet in Switzerland, an ideal home for a couple who turned neutrality into a virtue. Switzerland’s probably much nicer than any of the chalets at Pontin’s, so God bless ’em, they may have been the last two Cynics to get out of the old music industry with their lives.

MILLIONAIRES CLUB!!!

AUGUST 11, 2004

Country superstar SHANIA TWAIN has joined the exclusive club featuring THE EAGLES, LED ZEPPELIN and MICHAEL JACKSON after shifting 20 million copies of her hit COME ON OVER album in America.

The singer's 1997 album has been certified double diamond in the latest Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sales list.

The disc is the best-selling country album in history, according to the RIAA. Only five artists have titles that have shipped more copies to US retailers - The Eagles' THEIR GREATEST HITS (1971-1975), Michael Jackson's THRILLER, THE WALL by PINK FLOYD, LED ZEPPELIN's LED ZEPPELIN IV and BILLY JOEL's GREATEST HITS, VOL 1 + II.

Meanwhile, new multiple-platinum certifications handed out by the RIAA include EVANESCENCE's FALLEN, CLOSER by JOSH GROBAN and RAY CHARLES' GENIUS LOVES COMPANY.

NEW ZEALAND HOME

AUGUST 20, 2004

Shania Twain plans to fight countryside access laws in New Zealand - where she is planning to purchase a 42,000-acre (16,997 hectare) sheep farm.

The COME ON OVER singer, 38, and husband ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE want to buy the property at the country's Wanaka area - on condition a new hiking trial is introduced to give hikers access to the neighbouring lands instead of their desired Motatapu Station.

However neighbours DON and VICKY McRAE say they were "totally shocked" by the plan to use their land.

Twain explains, "We just have to have boundaries in order to keep some normalcy in our lives.

"We just sort of decided - especially with me being in the spotlight so much - that I would associate myself with cameras and with the spotlight when it's related to my music and when it's not, then I won't be there."

In New Zealand, land access is a contentious issue.

Finance minister MICHAEL CULLEN and other ministers who must approve the deal, said last month (JUL04) that it would not go through unless public access to the property was maintained.

AUGUST 25, 2004

Country star SHANIA TWAIN's brother has been arrested for drug possession after he was pulled over by police in Canada.

The THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH star's younger half-sibling DARRYL TWAIN was caught by cops in Edmonton after they recognised a vehicle matching the description of a car involved in a shooting last month (JUL04).

Police spokesman ANDY WEILER says officers discovered more than 170 pieces of rock cocaine in the car, valued at almost $5,400 (GBP3,000).

Twain has been charged with having drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a drug, and possessing the proceeds of crime. He was released on bail after questioning.

Twain - along with his brothers-in-law FRANKLIN LOGAN and JASON LOGAN - are due in court on 3 September (04).

PARTY FOR TWO DUETS WITH MARK MCGRATH AND BILLY CURRINGTON

AUGUST 31, 2004

Shania TWAIN has recorded two duets of the same tune for her new GREATEST HITS album because she can't pick which version is her favourite.

The country singer recorded PARTY OF TWO with both SUGAR RAY's MARK McGRATH and labelmate BILLY CURRINGTON - and both collaborations will appear on the hits compilation.

Videos for the two versions were recently filmed in Europe.

Country star SHANIA TWAIN's childhood was so impoverished, she was forced to sleep in freezing conditions.

The THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH beauty was often crippled by frostbite during the winter months, because her parents couldn't afford to pay the heating bill.

She says, "My parents couldn't always feed us or pay the heating bills.

"Many times we had to go to bed with layers on. Some winters I got frostbite. We could have relied on the welfare system, but my father had too much pride. So a lot of times we suffered."

UNAUTHORIZED TV MOVIE SHANIA'S REACTION TO IT.

DECEMBER 21, 2004

Country star SHANIA TWAIN is horrified after learning that an unauthorised TV movie is being planned about her life.

The MAN! I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN singer was recently told about the project, and she admits she's not quite sure what writers could put in the film to make it interesting for viewers.

She says of the project, "I have nothing to do with it.

"I do think it influences the way people see you. I'd like to see if there's anything I don't know about myself.

"What are they gonna find out? I've lived such a square life. I have had no time to get into drugs and stupid things. I've been focused, or I never would have got here."

SHANIA SAYS MONEY IS A BURDEN IT CREATES STRESS

DECEMBER 24, 2004

Country star SHANIA TWAIN hates the trappings of her success, and wishes she was impoverished instead.

The sexy singer has made millions from an ultra-successful solo career - reportedly $57 million (GBP30 million) from concert ticket sales this year (04) alone - but she sees the money she makes as a burden.

Twain explains, "Money is a burden. All anybody needs is enough to eat and have a roof over their heads.

"Any more than that is a stress. My son is going to have money, and he's going to be stressed."

Shania Twain by TAMMIE ARROYO/AFF-USA.COM
Shania Twain joins the parade of country stars popping up on TV during the Thanksgiving holidays when she guests on the popular NBC reality series, The Apprentice, Thanksgiving night, Nov. 24, at 9:00 p.m. (ET). The episode has the Apprentice teams trying to devise a winning marketing campaign for the new Shania by Stetson fragrance. The holiday week proves to be a cornucopia of country on TV. Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 23, Kenny Chesney and Faith Hill star in their own network specials. But it's likely that no one stands to be fired on their shows.

Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain Pay Tribute to Desperate Housewives on Album  8/23/05

Shania Twain and Gloria Estfan are among the stars so inspired by hit TV show Desperate Housewives, they've recorded tunes for a new accompanying album.

Twain's new single Shoes leads the project, Music From and Inspired by Desperate Housewives, which also features the track God Bless the American Housewife, written especially for the album by country trio Shedaisy.

Meanwhile, the video for Twain's single will feature the stars of the show.

The album also features Estefan singing Young Hearts Run Free, Liz Phair covering the Rolling Stones' Motherss Little Helper and the Indigo Girls revamping Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson.

The album will be released next month (SEP05) to coincide with the start of the second season of the hit show

"Shania: The Movie":

I'm not really crazy about the idea because if it's not correct (the public will) get the wrong idea of what my life is all about -- so that's a little unsettling," said Twain, who was raised in Timmins, Ont. "And who portrays you too, I mean what if they don't portray you (right)." On that front, Twain was more than willing to check out a photo of the girl, Meredith Henderson best known for YTV's The Adventures Of Shirley Holmes, cast to play her. "I don't know who she is. She sure looks lovely. She looks nice. I mean I'm sure she'll do the best job that she can. She's only going to take direction from whoever's directing."

0409.30-Timmins snubbed by movie [Daily Press]:

The CBC Shania movie based on the unauthorized biography "Shania Twain" by Robin Eggar will not be filming in Shania's hometown of Timmins. Timmins will be little more than a glimpse in the movie about singing sensation Shania Twain. A camera crew will be coming to Timmins to shoot background and iconic images of the city, but no scenes will be filmed where Twain spent her younger years. Timmins Mayor Vic Power called the plan, “a horrible miscarriage of justice.” “A movie about Shania Twain should be shot in Timmins,” Power said. “To me, that’s a bit like making a movie about the (Toronto) Maple Leafs and filming it in Montreal. This is her hometown, and it certainly should be shot here.”  Most of the scenes for the two-hour movie will be shot in Sudbury. The film, a project of Barna Alper Production, will air on CBC Television in spring 05...We’ve talked with the producers and showed them the sites of interest in the city,” she said. “We’re disappointed about their decision because it would be great to have something like that in Timmins.” Despite Timmins’ exclusion, Hautanen remains excited about the movie. “Most of the time you’re staring at the people on the screen anyway, not the stuff in the background,” she said. “As the producers explained it to me, when you’re watching a movie, a school is a school.”  Hautanen and Saari both cautioned that the movie is based on an unauthorized biography on the performer. “Shania is not participating in this,” Saari said.

Shania's fragrance, "Shania by Stetson", is featured in the September 2005 issues of "Elle" magazine and "Glamour" magazine.

HERE are all of the details.

"ELLE" magazine - The September issue of "Elle" magazine (with Jennifer Lopez on the cover) contains the most coverage on Shania's fragrance, when compared to "Glamour".

On page 392 of "Elle" magazine, there is a feature on Shania's "Shania" by Stetson fragrance at the TOP of the page.

The feature is in a section of the magazine that talks about celeb. fragrances that are coming out.

The feature includes a photo with a collage of items in it. Each item in the photo is numbered. The number in the photo corresponds with a description and/or explanation of the use of that item in creating "Shania" by Stetson.

In addition, the photo collage includes a snapshot of Shania from the 2004 CMA awards. It is a very small photo, but visable in the right corner of the collage picture.

"GLAMOUR" magazine - The September issue of "Glamour" magazine (with Jennifer Connelly on the cover) has a smaller feature on the "Shania" fragrance.

On page 154 there is a story on 6 of the major perfumes coming out...along with a photo of all of the bottles that each perfume will be sold in.

It just has a small description of Shania's fragrance and a mention of its Cost ($"Elle" Magazine (September 2005) Information

On Page 392 in "Elle" magazine (with Jennifer Lopez on the cover), there is a photo featuring a sort of collage of various items dealing with the "Shania by Stetson" fragrance.

There are 7 different items in the photo. 6 of them are numbered and each number corresponds to an explanation of that item.

The one item in the photo collage that is not numbered is a Snapshot Photo of Shania from the 2004 CMA awards.

Here are details about the 6 numbered items in the photo collage of items from the "ELLE" magazine feature on "Shania" by Stetson:

SHANIA TWAIN

ITEM # 1 in the photo collage: A bottle of "Shania" by Stetson

1. Shania by Stetson - sweet fruit notes such as raspberry mingle with rose, freesia, and honeysuckle.

ITEM # 2 in the photo collage: Snapshot photo of a Vase from Shania's home (the inspiration for the shape of the "Shania" bottle)

2. Via her assistant, Twain sent Stetson's marketing team a Polaroid of a vase she has at home. She "thought it was a great shape for a perfume bottle" and suggested the final design's "clear glass with a frosted top."

ITEM # 3 in the photo collage: A Prairie Rose (said to be the "heart" of the fragrance)

3. Twain considers prairie rose, at the heart of the fragrance, versatile and a "favorite flower because it can create different moods."

ITEM # 4 in the photo collage: Green plant leaves with dew on them

4. "I love being outdoors," the singer says. An added note of dew on green plant leaves reflects that passion.

ITEM # 5 in the photo collage: Music/lyrics notes for Shania's "The Woman In Me" song

5. Part of Twain's inspiration was the "strength, power, and will of a woman," she says. "It's the same person conveyed in my song 'The Woman In Me.'"

ITEM # 6 in the photo collage: Star fruit, pomegranate, and patchouli

6. Star fruit, pomegranate, and patchouli help round out the eau de toilette's aroma.

THE SWEET SMELL OF SHANIA

Source: Country Weekly Magazine

(Shania Twain)

Add another title-perfume designer-to Shania Twain's long list of achievements. This fall, Shania will debut her new fragrance, "Shania by Stetson." "I believe strongly in the strength and ability of women," she said. "This fragrance is about living life and pursuing your dreams. It's about believing in yourself." The scent will be available in stores this September, and Shania was involved in every step of the process. The bottle was even inspired by a vase in her home. "The fragrance represents the qualities that I try to embody each day: strength and confidence, independence and love of life," she added. "I hope this fragrance gives a small piece of that to the women who will wear it everyday."

Shania Twain
Success is even sweeter for Shania Twain these days. She's now teamed with Stetson Fragrances to develop a line of personal scents. "I wanted to partner with a company that would be able to express my personality through their products," said Shania. "Stetson is a great fit for me to accomplish this. Like a favorite song, a scent evokes a memory, creates a mood and inspires a feeling." Stetson said it wanted to work with Shania because she stands for everything they believe it represents: "independence, originality and accessibility."

FAITH AND SHANIA MOST DESIRABLE
1-26-2005

Faith Hill
AskMen.com, the largest men's portal online, recently revealed what country fans have known for years. On their list of the 99 "Most Desirable Women of 2005," Faith Hill and Shania Twain made the cut. But this is no ordinary "who's hot?" men's poll. Instead of focusing on a celebrity's popularity, fame or beauty, AskMen.com's "top 99" selected the female celebrities that men feel are long-term relationship material. Readers were asked to vote according to who they would most want a relationship with, would consider marrying, or considered best suited to be the mother of their children. Coming in at #54, Faith placed higher than actresses Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz. Shania is #24 on the list - beating out "JAG's" Catherine Bell, Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Garner and supermodel Gisele Bunchen. Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima came in first. The poll results were based on over 250,000 ballots cast over a two-month period.

MAN, I FEEL LIKE A SHEEP FARMER

1-17-2005

Shania Twain
Not content with breaking records and world domination on the music charts, Shania Twain is now venturing into the glamorous world of sheep farming. She plans to farm up to 15,000 merino sheep on her South Island properties in New Zealand and hopes to turn her investment into an $800,000-a-year business within two years. Shania's sheep will be tended by six full-time employees and 15 part-time staff over three years. Development projects include a $1.5 million home for Shania and husband Mutt Lange; $250,000 to build woolsheds and sheepyards; $100,000 for shearers' quarters; $360,000 in fencing; and roads and an airstrip at the cost of $80,000. Shania and Mutt paid $21.4 million for the perpetual lease of Motatapu Station and Mt. Soho Station near Wanaka, New Zealand.

IT'S NOT EASY BEING (IN THE) GREEN

1-3-2005

Shania Twain
She grew up poor and now she has more money than she can spend - but Shania Twain says having money is actually more trouble than it's worth. "Money is a burden," says Shania, who made about $57 million last year in concert ticket sales. "All anybody needs is enough to eat and have a roof over their heads. Any more than that is a stress. My son is going to have money, and he's going to be stressed."

SHANIA'S BIGGEST WISH
11-17-2004

With a busy career and toddler son, Shania Twain reveals that what she wants most is a little alone time. "I'd like more free time," said Shania to Nashville IQ, "now that I have a child. My career is all-occupying, as all of our careers are, but now that I have a child I have so little time to do things just for myself. I'd like to spend more time riding [horses], I'd like to spend more time cooking, things that just aren't demanding, just time for myself. I think every woman gets to that point when you have a multi-dimensional life where you say, 'Okay, what is there I can do that includes nobody but myself.'"

SHANIA TAKES TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES

11-10-2004

Shania Twain says that her Greatest Hits album is a time to reflect on what she's done, before looking ahead. "When you're pursuing a successful career, it's hard work and very, very tiring," she admits. "So it's nice to come to the point of doing this greatest hits because I'm coming to the point of sitting back and reflecting on what I've done as opposed to what I still have to do. It's a nice release to say, 'Wow, look at all we've done' and it helps you pause a bit and appreciate all the work."

SHANIA GOES HOME

11-3-2004

Yesterday Shania Twain returned to her hometown of Timmins, Ontario, as she was welcomed home to inaugurate a museum built in her honor. According to the Canadian Press, about 5,000 folks turned up in a parking lot outside the Shania Twain Centre, a sprawling facility that houses her trophies, wedding dress and a variety of stage outfits. But Shania started the day with a surprise visit to the Timmins High and Vocational School, which she attended as a teenager. Shania presented the school with a $10,000 Band-Aid grant from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for the purchase of musical instruments at an assembly of about 500 students. In return, the school's principal gave Shania hockey jerseys from the school - one for her and a "pint-sized version" for her son, Eja. Later, Shania took a private tour of the Shania Twain Centre before cutting the official ribbon and signing autographs for the fans.
SHANIA TWAIN'S A CLASS ACT
9-24-2004

When Billy Currington recently traveled to London to shoot the video for his new duet with Shania Twain, "Party For Two," his singing partner made quite a lasting impression. Billy told X Radio Networks that Shania went out of her way to make sure he was okay. "Her people that work for her, I remember on the set of the video it was around lunchtime and they walked over to me and said, 'Billy, Shania wants to know if you will come over here and eat with us?' And I'm like, 'Yea, thanks for asking, I'd love to!' And on the walk over there, they told me that Shania wanted them to really take care of me. And all these things that they were telling me about that she wanted for me, I'm thinking, 'How cool it that?' How sweet for an artist of her caliber to care like that in her busy time, all the things that she was doing on the set, that she cared about how I was and how I felt, and if I had what I needed."

SHANIA'S SLAP-HAPPY MOVIE ROLE

If you go see the new Jude Law movie, "I Heart Huckabees," which opens nationwide Oct. 1, you'll see a cameo appearance by Shania Twain. It seems Shania, who's been offered movie roles before and turned them all down, changed her mind about this one when Jude himself wrote Shania and asked her to be in the flick. Shania's part only took one day to film on the Los Angeles set, and she played herself. It seems Jude's character spends much of the movie trying to convince people he knows Shania personally, and she takes offense at the lie. "It was such a great experience," said Shania, "'cause I've never been on a set before. All I had to do was slap Jude Law around a little bit and get mad at him. It was fun!"

GOODBYE SHANIA, HELLO MCDONALD'S

(Here is a McDonalds now I'm not absolutely sure but maybe Emerson Drive is here-however this is the McDonalds in Timmins that Shania worked at.)
7-9-2004

Tomorrow Emerson Drive will play their last opening slot for Shania Twain on her current tour. They'll miss touring with one of country's biggest stars - but they'll miss her food just as much. "She had her own catering traveling with the whole crew," says guitarist Danick Dupelle, "and they were from New Zealand and Australia, and the food was just unbelievable. And one day I said, 'I'm going to be careful about what I eat,' because you eat so well, it's good food, and when there's good food like that and good dessert too. And that's the problem - my diet just went down the drain."

SHANIA DONATES PERSONAL PHOTOS FOR CHARITY

6-22-2004

Remember Shania Twain's Glamour magazine cover from October 2003? Well now you can win that cover, matted and framed - along with a couple of never-before seen pictures from that photo shoot. Shania is donating the cover plus two Polaroid test prints. Test Polaroids are used at photo shoots to check lighting, composition and other elements of the photograph before the actual shoot begins. Typically the Polaroid prints are destroyed but Shania graciously donated two of them - even autographing one - to Gilda's Club Nashville. All proceeds from the sale of this item will benefit Gilda's Club Nashville, a social and emotional support community for men, women and children whose lives have been touched by cancer. All services at Gilda's Club are provided free of charge. To bid, go to ebay.com and search for item #3821994176. But hurry, because the auction ends this Friday, June 25. Additional information can be found at gildasclubnashville.org.

I love this picture of Shania it shows the truly fun side of her and with her guitar. Shania is fast becoming my very, very favorite country music artist before anyone else. This lady is truly a wonder in the music world and her family world. She is undeniably one of the most sensitive and caring person that I have seen in a long time in the music industry.

Here is the rugged and playful Shania on top of a four wheeler. She owns one of these machines with Twain across it very large. She looks so comfortable up on this and very much at ease which is probably true since she has probably driven these things around quite a bit.

The Deerhurst Story

Originally built in 1896 by a young Englishman, Charles Waterhouse, Deerhurst Resort was the first major resort on the Northern Lakes of Muskoka. around that time you could only get to Deerhurst by steamboat and it consisted of a main lodge on four acres of prime waterfront. During its first week of operation Deerhurst hosted two guests who paid $3.50 per person, per week, which included three meals a day.

While its guests were mainly American it hosted guests from all over the world who enjoyed gracious hospitality, fine meals and invigorating outdoor activities in refreshing Muskoka air--traditions that continue over a century later.

Throughout three generations of the Waterhouse family--Charles, his son Maurice, and his grandson Bill, Deerhurst grew to be one of Canada's leading resort destinations. In the 1970's, Deerhurst went through its first significant renovation to become a year round operation.

In the mid 1980's the resort expanded dramatically with the addition of Luxurious Multi-Bedroom Condominium Suites, the Pavilion Sports Complex, the Deerhurst Highlands Golf Course and the redesign of the Deerhurst Lakeside Golf Course.

By the beginning of the 1990's, Deerhurst had grown to nearly 800 Acres and could accomodate 1,000 guests.
For most of the 1990's Deerhurst was managed by Canadian Pacific Hotels until it was acquired by Massachusettes Mutual, through its subsidiary Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers, in 1998. New Castle Hotels, a hotel company based in Shelton, Connecticut was assigned management of the resort.

With the ownership change came a new chapter in Deerhursts proud history with the launching of a magnificent $25 million expansion of the Pavilion which was completed in 2000. Yet another management change came in March of this year(2005) when management was assumed by Atlific Hotels and Resorts. Today with over 100 years of continual improvements and growth, the beauty of Muskoka remains as Deerhurst Resort's most enduring asset. There are still deer at Deerhurst, silently poking their way through the forests in the early morning. The peacefulness of the sunset at the end of the lake and the call of the loon still hold the same appeal today as they did for Charles Waterhouse  and his guests over a century ago.

Bill Waterhouse purchased Deerhurst from his father. However he had already made his mark in Muskoka by furthering winter tourism with the development of the Hidden Valley Ski Club, resort and chalet community. Recognizing the importance of Deerhurst to become a year round resort, Bill and his partners completely refurbished and winterized the lodge. In July of 1972 the first of Deerhursts major reincarnation was complete. Throughout the next two decades, Bill spearheaded Deerhursts growth as a truly world-class resort, adding the Condominium accomodations and the year-round musical stage show, meeting rooms, two golf courses, and the Pavilion Sports & Conference Complex. Bill retired from Deerhurst in 1989, in the same year his father Maurice passed away.

The Shania Twain Connection
Did you know that Shania Twain was discovered at Deerhurst Resort while she performed in the live musical stage show from 1988-1990? She has often referred to Deerhurst Resort as "a very special place for me" and was married at the Resort in 1993. With the launch of her new album "Up!", Shania introduced Deerhurst Resort to millions of America's living rooms -- she brought an NBC film crew and morning host Katie Couric to visit her former stage, dressing room and fellow performers. This interview was shortly followed by visits from People Magazine and CNN New York.

Fact Sheet

LOCATION
Deerhurst Resort is nestled on the shores of Peninsula Lake within the Muskoka region of Ontario. The resort commands 800 acres of woodland, waterways and rolling resort landscape. Minutes from the town of Huntsville, Deerhurst Resort is approximately two hours drive and two turns from Toronto's Hwy 400 and 401 interchange. Train service is available to Huntsville and the resort has an on-site airstrip for charter flights.

HISTORY
Englishman Charles Waterhouse built Deerhurst in 1896 as the first summer resort in the Huntsville area. At that time the resort featured just 18 guest bedrooms, a dining room and a smoking lounge all located in what is now known as the Lodge. Throughout three generations of the Waterhouse family, Charles, his son Maurice, and his grandson Bill, Deerhurst grew to become one of Canada's most comprehensive conference and leisure destinations.

In the 1970s, Deerhurst went through its first significant expansion and renovation to become a year-round destination. In the mid 1980s, the resort expanded dramatically with the addition of luxurious multi-bedroom condominium suites, the original Pavilion sports complex, the Deerhurst Highlands Golf Course and more. By the beginning of the 1990s, the resort had grown to nearly 800 acres and could accommodate 1,000 guests.

In March 1998, Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company acquired the resort through its subsidiary Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers Inc. At that time, New Castle Hotels and Resorts, a Shelton, CT-based hotel management and ownership company, was assigned management of the resort. In March 2005, management responsibilities were handed over to Atlific Hotels and Resorts.

In March 2000 expansion and renovation of the Pavilion was completed, adding an entire new wing and exterior to the Pavilion. The expansion includes a new lobby, 102-room hotel wing, restaurant and lounge, grand ballroom and enhanced meeting facilities and an indoor pool. The design of the renovation has been inspired by the natural wilderness surroundings and rich Muskoka tourism heritage of Charles Waterhouse's original Deerhurst Resort.

Twain a Superstar That Doesn't Compete
Shania Twain doesn't look at success in music as competition

I have found this article on Shania while looking for information on her career and her views.

By Neil Haislop

NASHVILLE, TN Monday Jan.24.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Shania Twain says she does not look at success in music as a competition. She started out with Toby Keith, a very competitive guy, but says she's the complete opposite.

"He (Toby) says, 'Don't you just want to be a winner?' And I said, 'No. I really don't care.' I make music and that's what I do. And, of course, I want it to be successful, but I'm not looking at the scale and going, 'Who's beating me or whatever.' So there's just different types...."

"I, definitely, I'm in my own race. I don't have that nature. It just breeds jealously because then you're a sore loser. And how can you lose in music anyway? It's all a matter of opinion. There's no losing or winning. You put out your music and that's what your music is."

"Success, to me anyway, if you can feed yourself, if you can make a living at what you do, you're successful in life. Maybe that's because I come from a poor background."

FAITH AND SHANIA MOST DESIRABLE

in the january issue of country weekly

Meredith Henderson to Become Shania

(Photo Credits on this site of the pics that are like the one above go to the credit of a person whom over the past few months has become a very good friend of mine off of the Shania Twain CMT Message Board and that person would be our own Chef Flameworthy Frank. He is always right there giving us new recipes too try out in the summer and the winter. Frank I want you to know that I think you are a very special person.)

Ottawa-born actress Meredith Henderson, best known for starring in the youth TV series The Adventures of Shirley Holmes, will take on the role of Canadian pop-country star Shania Twain in the upcoming CBC-TV movie, filmmakers announced Wednesday.

"She commands the camera," director Jerry Ciccoritti told the Canadian Press. "Can she sing? Yes!" Ciccoritti recently explored northern Ontario shooting locations in Sudbury, Huntsville and Timmins and filming is set to begin September 20. However, Ciccoritti said he wasn't sure if the film – which will detail the transformation of Eileen Twain into Shania from 1973 to 1993 – would be completed in time for the 2004-2005 season.

The 20-year-old Henderson won a Gemini Award in her early teens for the Shirley Holmes series, in which she portrayed a descendent of the legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes.

Shania Twain, Sheep Farmer
Twain enters into the wool business
.

By Neil Haislop

NASHVILLE, TN Tuesday Jan.18.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Shania Twain grew up in a family that planted new trees...now she's headed into the business of making new sweaters...wool sweaters that is.

Shania Twain plans to farm up to 15,000 merino sheep on her New Zealand, South Island properties and expects to turn the investment into an $800,000-a-year business within two years.

The business will require six full-time employees and a further 15 staff over three years to work on development projects.

These include a $1.5 million home for the couple; $250,000 to build woolsheds and sheepyards, $100,000 for shearers' quarters; fencing worth $360,000, and $80,000 on roads and an airstrip.

Twain and her producer-songwriter husband, Robert Lange, paid $21.4 million for the perpetual lease of Motatapu Station and Mt Soho Station, near Wanaka, New Zealand.

Shania Twain Releases New Single

By Neil Haislop

NASHVILLE, TN Thursday Apr.21.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- The determined young singer from Timmins, Ontario, Canada that fought for control of her videos, struggled to get past a weak debut album and unsuccessful debut singles, emerging with a sophomore album that ranks as one of the biggest female albums in history on her way to international
superstardom, has released a new single from her greatest hits album.

The title of which seems all to fitting, "I Ain't No Quitter." It's at radio as of April 20 from Shania Twain.

Shania feels like a farmer

july 1,2005

CANADIAN music star Shania Twain has won permission to build a mansion and other buildings on her New Zealand sheep farm.

There had been complaints that the structures would not blend with the landscape.
Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the development -- including a large house with garage, two guest cottages and ancillary structures -- on the alpine ranch, Motatapu Station, on South Island.

Last year Twain won approval to lease Motatapu Station, 24,700ha of rugged and scenic farmland, for 33 years with rights for automatic renewal.

Shania Twain wins approval to build New Zealand mansion

Wednesday, June 29, 2005 Updated at 3:55 AM EDT

Associated Press

Wellington, New Zealand — Canadian country music star Shania Twain has won permission to build a mansion and other buildings on her New Zealand sheep farm, despite complaints that the complex would not blend in with the landscape, an official said Wednesday.

Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the development -- including a large house with attached garage, two guest cottages and ancillary structures -- on their alpine ranch, Motatapu Station, on South Island, planning commissioner Trevor Shiels said in a report Wednesday.

Twain and her husband Robert “Mutt” Lange applied for permission to build the development last year but met with staunch opposition from locals who said the diamond-shaped complex would be visible for miles.

In its objections to the plans, the Upper Clutha Environmental Society said people should be stopped from “slamming mansions onto leasehold land.”

“It doesn't matter that it's Shania Twain,” said society president Julian Hayward last year. “We get a lot of people trying to put buildings in inappropriate locations and we object to all of them.”

Nevertheless, the local council approved the development, subject to 17 conditions, Shiels said.

Among the conditions, Twain must immediately replace any dying plant or tree, provide a water supply for fire fighting and agree to plant the same mountain grasses as those growing on surrounding land so that the complex blends in with the landscape.

There was no word on whether Twain and Lange would agree to the conditions and opponents of the plan were not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

Last year Twain and Lange won approval to lease Motatapu Station -- 24,700 hectares of rugged and scenic farmland -- for 33 years with automatic renewal rights. The pastoral leasehold farm land near the tourist town of Wanaka cost them $18.5-million.

Wanaka is about 800 kilometres southwest of the capital, Wellington.

The house will be built in the Mototapu Valley. Earthworks will mitigate its effect on the surrounding environment.

Shania's home gets thumbs up
Jun 29, 2005

Canadian singer Shania Twain has gained approval to build a home near Wanaka.

Twain bought Mototapu Station last year and applied for resource consent to build a one storey house.

Independent commissioner Trevor Sheils has allowed the resource consent to proceed.

Earlier this year a Queenstown Lakes District Council planner recommended that the consent be turned down. But changes to the size and scope of the building satisfied the commissioner.

NASHVILLE, TN Thursday Dec.23.2004 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Shania has had a great year, finishing up a huge two-year tour and collecting another double diamond album for UP! She says she owes a lot of her success to trying hard to make unique music.

"I'm always trying to do something unique and be an individual artist so in that sense it's probably going to end up being different from a lot of what else is out there, but that is a goal, I do that intentionally, but not intentionally to be a trend setter," she says modestly.

"Yeah, it does take time to put together I think a good quality record," she admits. "More time for me, I think because I write my own music, so you know, of course it's just more time consuming. And then you know, all the studio time."

shania twain is concerned about the unauthorized tv movie of her life

Country star SHANIA TWAIN is concerned after learning that an unauthorised TV movie is being planned about her life.

IT'S NOT EASY BEING (IN THE) GREEN

in the january 2005 issue of Country Weekly

She grew up poor and now she has more money than she can spend - but Shania Twain says having money is actually more trouble than it's worth. "Money is a burden," says Shania, who made about $57 million last year in concert ticket sales. "All anybody needs is enough to eat and have a roof over their heads. Any more than that is a stress. My son is going to have money, and he's going to be stressed."

Straight From Shania:

"All I ever intended was to make a living at what I do. Everything I've achieved since then is above and beyond."

"I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that's making me successful."

"The only reason that you do visual is solely for the visual. That's the only reason. It doesn't sell your music for you."

"That all seems like another lifetime ago, so far away, but it's never that far removed that I couldn't do it again. And there's a comfort there. I think if you are ever in a desperate situation and you get through it, you have a confidence in life that you would otherwise not have. I realize that no matter what I ever lose, I'll be able to manage." (on the death of her parents and raising her two younger siblings alone)

"Yes, you can lose somebody ovenight, yes, your whole life can be turned upside down. Life is short. It can come and go like a feather in the wind."

"During the hardship of my childhood, Dolly Parton was such a staple of my life ... And so to have her there, it was just really weird and it was very emotional. It was a personal moment, that's what it was, and it was on TV." (Shania on crying on Oprah during an appearance with Dolly Parton)

"I  used to think anyone who lived in a brick house and didn't have to cut coupons to go to the grocery store was rich. I think, deep down, I always have that anxiety that I might be poor again."

"I would have no breakfast and nothing to eat at lunchtime, I would be at school, just sitting there famished when everyone was opening up their ham sandwiches. It was humiliating, so I would go to the music room and play.,"

"If it does stand out, then I guess it's a compliment, but I just wear whatever feels comfortable." (on her "skin-tight, midriff-bearing" outfits)

"I think it's when I get out of the tub. I know a lot of girls feel this way - you've just had a bath and you get out and your skin is fresh and you've stuck your hair up without even looking. That's when you look the best. I don't get it - you just get out of the bath, look in the mirror and go, "Wow! I look great!" But you're not going anywhere - you're just going to bed! So you must stroll around naked if you're that pleased with yourself...I do! I never used to - I was never comfortable with myself that way, but I'm a lot less critical now. It's a great time of the day - when there's no one around." (when asked when she feels most sexy)

"I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed because it would have to be my sweats and a pair of flip-flops. I'm not into fancy clothes most of the time. But I like to feel like a woman - I feel sexy in a plain white T-shirt with nothing underneath. My husband disagrees. He thinks nude is sexy. He likes me naked. Still, I like the white T-shirt." (on her favorite thing to wear)

"There's no way that I would go nude in front. I don't think under any circumstances!" (on posing nude)

"It isn't revealing at all. In fact, it's even less revealing than if I was in a bathing suit top. There's zero cleavage. There's absolutely nothing showing." (on her famous Rolling Stone cover shot)

"I don't want my body to be a distraction from my talent or my brain."

"So many people bare their midriffs, I don't know why mine is such an issue."

"I refuse to play down the way I look in order to be taken seriously as an artist, I mean if I had an office job, I wouldn't show up for work baring my midriff, But this is entertainment, I don't want to be 50 years old and thinking I should have enjoyed it while I had it."

"I'm just finally as an adult in my thirties being comfortable with the fact I'm female, and if I bounce when I walk then that's just life. It doesn't mean you're showing off and it doesn't give people the right to touch you because you do have breasts."

"If you saw me the way I normally am, you wouldn't think I was so beautiful - I don't know what you would think." (on her looks)

"I don't fit anywhere, I fit with you guys.'' (on her fans)

"I'm not just a lap dancer afterall..." (after winning the 1999 CMA Entertainer Of The Year award)

"It's the first time I've ever worn a short skirt. Dressing up is the fun part. I like looking good and I enjoy it." (1999 Grammys)

"I'm basically a bar singer, I am a bar singer who ended up on a concert stage." (backstage after her performance at the 2002 CMA Awards)

"Well, he's about 6 feet tall, blond, blue eyes, he's a very sweet sweet man." (on her husband, Robert John "Mutt" Lange)

"Just one day we hugged each other. But it was such a different kind of hug and that was actually when we knew. It was a very sweet, honest moment. Looking at him the day I fell in love and looking at him the day before? Two different things." (on falling in love with Mutt)

"...I think that if anything ever happens to Mutt or Eja, that'll just be the end of me. Just put me in a straitjacket. I won't get through it. {Laughs} If anything happens to my husband or my child, I won't get through it. I just love my husband so much. He's like the most special person. He is half of me; Without him I would be half a person. I really would be. You might has well just cut off my arms and legs" - Redbook, 2002

"Now with our son, Eja, there is so much love in our family. He is just like Mutt; open, loving and warm. I'm not like that. I'm not as easy to reach all the time. They're good for me, good for my soul." - Marie Claire, 2002

"He's a humble guy and basically he doesn't want to be a star. He just wants to be a person who makes the music. (on her husband)

"Back then , there were no romantic notions. I always figured he was another fat record producer with long greying hair in a ponytail. I was very surprised when I met this neat looking blond with long curly hair. Although he said he was never getting married again, when I came along there was just no avoiding it. We were just so obviously destined to be together" (on before she met Mutt) - Marie Claire, 2002.

"I met Mutt at fan fair, Mutt is a big fan of country music. When I first went to his house to write with him, he had the biggest country music collection I'd ever seen." (on Mutt's passion for country music)

"It was just like a dream. I could have ended up with an album that's not all that different from anything else coming out of Nashville. Mutt made the difference. He took these songs, my attitude, my creativity, and colored them in a way that is unique." (on The Woman In Me)

"He never comes with me I don't think he ever will, and I totally understand where he comes from. He's a humble guy and basically he doesn't want to be a star. He just wants to be a person who makes the music. People write that we're getting divorced but nothing could be further from the truth. We're a very happy couple. There are no inhibitions between us whatsoever." (on Mutt staying out of the spotlight)

"The 'no sex' marriage thing. That is not true." (on the most outrageous rumor she's ever heard about herself)

"I'd rather clean my toilet than go to a show-business party."

"I learned tons about the meaning of service there." (on working at McDonald's in Timmins as a teen)

"I really feel like life will dictate itself. You should allow it to unfold as naturally as possible. Just go with the flow. When you're really desperate, you say a few prayers and hope for the best. That's the way I've always lived my life."

"Writing is very much a playground - an artistic playground. It's the most fun thing I do."

"I love to write stories. Songwriting is my favorite part of what I do. I like to give every song its own personality and attitude and to sing each one in its own style."

"Music is for our lives, it is something we live with and live by......I can write a song but you can interpret it any way you want and its yours! It's personal, it's yours to have and we give that and I guess that is probably what we get back the most, the fact that other people make it their own and that means so much" - "Oprah: After The Show", 2003

"I don't have to worry about what people are thinking and what's going on in the industry. I don't want that stuff to influence what I'm doing. Because I think it stifles you creatively. I don't want to have to care too much about that. All I care about is what the fans think. It's really all I care about, honestly."

'No. I really don't care.' I make music and that's what I do. And, of course, I want it to be successful, but I'm not looking at the scale and going, 'Who's beating me or whatever.' So there's just different types...." "I, definitely, I'm in my own race. I don't have that nature. It just breeds jealously because then you're a sore loser. And how can you lose in music anyway? It's all a matter of opinion. There's no losing or winning. You put out your music and that's what your music is." (on winning aand competition)

"I can see on their faces what the songs mean to them. I'm affected by music, when I sit and listen I'm high by it, so when I see I'm affecting them the same way, I really feel I've done what I came to do." (on performing for fans at concerts)

"There is a typical Shania attitude in the lyric, a definite female confidence. It's all about a girl who knows what she wants, she not only knows how to get it, but she's going to get it good." (talking about "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!")

As for the purist naysayers, Twain sneers playfully: "As if i care ..."

"Look, I know I push the country music envelope, but so have most of the country artists I love — Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson. the purists didn't like them at first either. I'm not a purist. I'm just trying to find a place where my music fits."

"It makes me very excited to know that I might be in someone's record collection who has no other country records. And then at the same time, I'm in another record collection of people who just listen to country music and they wouldn't dare listen to anything else. They both have my record. I'm very flattered by that. Isn't it great that music can cross those boundaries?"

"I really hope my peers appreciate and respect what I'm doing."

"It's so easy to get flattered by everything that's going on around you. And it's okay to be flattered, but it's not okay to lose a true sense of humility. And it's hard. Sometimes you're trying to build your confidence and confidence comes from ego. In order to be really confident, and do a good job, it's kind of an ego thing. So, how do you do that and stay humble at the same time? ... I think humility is the most important thing for me to remember."

"I'm never at my best on television. There's a row of cameras between you and the audience, and it's very weird, very confusing."

"I'm more private than people realize. I'm not that easy to get to know."

"Yes, you can lose somebody overnight, yes, your whole life can be turned upside down. Life is short. It can come and go like a feather in the wind."

"My goal is to appeal to as many people as I can. I'm not looking to leave country, but I do want to have more international success."

"It's important to give it all you have while you have the chance."

"Everyone perceives you and writes about you in a different way, in print, in the media. The only true way to get to know an artist is through their music. If you're listening to an artist who writes their own music, you know you're finding out about that person through their songs. Without a doubt, the best way to get to know me is through my music."

"It's not like I'm abandoning one to be the other. I am them... legitimitly. I spent my whole youth singing in clubs doing whatever music paid the bills. If there were rock bars hiring that year.. I was a rock singer. If there were pop bars hiring that year.. I was a Top 40 singer. If there were country bars hiring that year.. I was a country singer. I've done them all. So, I am real, and this is what I do." (on Country vs. Pop)

"Up until I was a recording artist, I said whatever paid the bills... I really thought that as a poor kid I would never make it."

"Later in my life, I'm going to look back and smile and be very fulfilled. I know that if I don't give it my all right now I'll regret it later. That's very important to me, because I've worked all my life to have this."

"I've seen alot of bar fights. If one broke out in front of me I'd get right in there, as I can't stand to see people hitting each other. I'd be trying to split them up, Like I was going to be able to do anything! I'm surprised I didn't get myself killed!"

"I'm a morning person. I don't sleep in. So if I'm going to be up I prefer to do my work in the morning because I hate breaking up my day."

"A happy heart comes first then the happy face. I believe in that very much. Just learning that life has to go on and you have to make it go on,.that's all there is to it"

"I guess the thing to remember is that no matter how tough things can get in your life, you still have the power to make a choice. You can fade away or you can strive to survive."

"We're all very selfish people. We love the attention when its complimentary and we hate the attention when it sucks. I don't like bad attention. I like good attention. I'm no different than anyone else."

"I remember I autographed it to Mutt Lange, and I may only have put one t on Mutt. I mean, I'd never heard of such a name. I'm sure he must've thought that was quite funny. He must've known from that autograph, right off the bat, that I had no idea who he was." (on autographing a picture to Mutt when he first called wanting to find out more about her)

"I'm not going to be somebody who wants to hold on to my fame for the rest of my life."

"Country music is still your grandpa's music, but it's also your daughter's music. It's getting bigger and better all the time and I'm glad to be a part of it."

"[My music] is country with a lot of outside influences. it is a mix of a lot of different styles of music."

"Without a doubt, the best way to get to know me is through my music."

"I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that's making me successful."

"Being in the public eye, there are people that are going to want to hurt you, y'know. They've got motives and this is happenning to me right now and it is something that I am taking quite personally."

"I don't like drugs. I don't like alcohol. I like clean living people around me." (on choosing her band)

"We live in a very remote area, we live out in the wilderness, we live out on the lake. We've got dogs and horses. Real things that I like to go back to, y'know, because my dogs don't care where I am on the charts." (laughs) - Shania 1995.

"They really had a strong and obvious respect for what I had accomplished to that point, as opposed to saying,'I know how I can turn your career around for you'. They didn't want to reinvent my career." (on her management team Jon Landau) - Country Canada, 1997.

"I love being in front of a live audience where I can control things. What I'm least comfortable with is the studio or anything contrived. I'm never at my best on television. There's a row of cameras between you and the audience, and it's very weird, very confusing." - MACLEANS, March 1998.

"I like to have fun with music. The purpose of music for me is to entertain. I'm not out there to be Einstein. "I'm making music for records, not for text books. I'm looking to entertain and inspire people, make them feel good or stir up emotions" - Canadian Musician, 1998

"It was very hard on my native family, I'm a registered band member, I've been part of their community since I was a little child. It's very hurtful to know there are people who want to unravel all that." (on tabloid gossip about her Native heritage)

"It was never my dream to be a star. That was my parents dream. I guess they prayed real hard." - MACLEANS, 1998

"I would love to have his life, to do the music and not have to be famous. I'm more private than people realize. I'm not easy to get to know. My husband's the only one who really knows me. To get through the kind of life I've been through, you have to be strong, and it's wonderful when you find the right person who can share everything about you." (on Mutt and being famous)

"My perfect day would start with breakfast out on the terrace, looking at the Alps. I'd wrap a duvet round myself, lounge around, then put on a soup or stew. Then I'd spend time with my horses. I'd come home, have a nice dinner and then Mutt and I would go watch a movie."

"My husband calls me Woody. When I met him, he thought I looked like Woody Woodpecker [because of her current haircut]. My family calls me Leen or Leeny, except for my grandmother who calls me Shania."

"I've always been so intense. I have to learn how to chill out. My husband is great at that. I love to cook, so when I'm home that helps me to relax."

"I was always a communicative performer, so I've just taken that on to a bigger stage. I don't like being seperated from the audience. I really enjoy the communication I have going on." (on performing)

"I start every day with a fruit and tofu shake. I always have liked soybeans, black beans, or chickpeas for lunch or dinner - and I love pasta. There are just so many ways to make pasta. And the Italians gave us so many wonderful sauces - your basic tomato, basil, olive oil, garlic." (on what she likes to eat while on tour)

"To be honest, I'm pretty exhausted, I soak in a hot bath and then go to bed. I'm not one of those people who stays up til four in the morning eating pizza and drinking beer." (on life on the road)

"I started at such a young age that I really feel old. I feel older than I am because I've lived such a full life already. I keep saying 'Oh, I'm so tired' "

"It's kind of fun, but I'm not sure what the definition of a diva is anymore. It could be an insult I suppose, but I think it's kind of fun." (on being called a Diva)

"I'm very independent. I've always been very bold, straightforward and black 'n' white about things in everyday life. I like to simplify things, get to the facts. That's always been the way I've been and nothing has ever been able to distract me - it's almost an insensitive quality. When your raised poor, and you've got lots of responsibilites as a child, you just end up that way, and it actually can be a bitter thing, but when my parents died, it just made me realize how valuable life is, how really fragile life is." (on a part of her personality)

"I believe strongly in the strength and ability of women. This fragrance is about living life and pursuing your dreams. It's about believing in yourself.....The fragrance represents the qualities that I try to embody each day: strength and confidence, independence and love of life. I hope this fragrance gives a small piece of that to the women who will wear it everyday." (on her perfume "Shania" by Stetson)

"Women are strong, and women admire beauty just as much as men do. I'll tell you one thing, men are more intimidated by me than the women. I'm not kidding."

"I have arm-wrestled here and there... guys seem to want to test my strength."

"I'm no cowgirl. ... hell, I'm a bush girl, and that's much tougher!" (as she laughs)

"Sometimes we would literally go two or three days at a time where we'd sit by the fire and start writing in the morning, go for a walk later in the afternoon, go for a horseback ride or eat, then write, go to bed really late, get up early in the morning and start all over again." (on writing the album Come On Over)

"We were in Italy two years ago, and we were at a soccer game. My husband loves sports. I don't know the game that well, so my mind drifted and I started writing." (how "From This Moment On" came about)

"I'm as excited as anyone when I get up there and win, but to be honest with you, I don't sit there waiting. I learned a long time ago that you just end up being very disappointed. I think it can make you very bitter if you just put too much weight in that. I don't want to be bitter. I don't even want to compete on that level, so I take it very lightly, actually." (on winning awards)

"Sorry about my butt there guys. You know, I would take a seat! But I wouldn't want to sit on a swollen member." (while hosting the 2003 Juno Awards, Shania was in the audience talking to some artists and accidentally had her backside in the faces of the group Swollen Members)

"All I had to do was slap Jude Law around a little bit and get mad at him. It was fun." (on her cameo in I (Heart) Huckabees)

"Forty is just another birthday. It doesn't make any difference you change physically, but I'm happy to do that." (on turning 40)

"Im still not able to walk down the beach without a beach wrap. I don't think I ever will be able to. It's kinda dumb!"

"You can't just grab her and help yourself. You have to ask, maybe she'll say yes...and maybe not." (referring to her song "If You Want To Touch Her, Ask!")

SHANIA GOT THE APPROVAL TOO BUILD HERE HOUSE.

Shania Twain gets permission to build home, guest lodges

June 30,2005

Country singer Shania Twain and her husband Mutt Lange have received resource consent to build a home and two guest lodges on their 17,000ha Motatapu Station, near Wanaka.

Country singer Shania Twain and her husband Mutt Lange have received resource consent to build a home and two guest lodges on their 17,000ha Motatapu Station, near Wanaka.

The consent decision, released yesterday by the Queenstown Lakes District Council, wasn't unexpected and had the support of many Wanaka residents.

However, independent hearing commissioner Trevor Shiels has placed 17 conditions on the project.

The building site is on a rise 1.5km from the end of Motatapu Rd, visible only from a short stretch near the road end.

The home will be visible above the ridgeline but not the skyline and will be built of natural materials.

Mr Shiels said in his decision that the building was well designed and suitable for the site. What had been debated at the hearing was the location.

To overcome opposing submissions, Twain and her husband had moved the buildings back from the terrace and lowered the height and number of chimneys to reduce their visibility.

Council consultant Andrew Henderson originally recommended the application be declined, but later reversed this after reconsidering the modifications and viewing further visibility plans.

The Upper Clutha Environmental Society was one of two objectors to the plan, saying no decision should be made until the tenure review process for the station had been completed.

But Mr Shiels rejected this argument, saying there was no evidence there would be a review of the lease on the land.

Even though the buildings would be on land designated either outstanding natural landscape or visual amenity area, he agreed with Mr Henderson that consent could be granted without any cumulative effects.

Twain and Mr Lange will be required to implement a planting programme associated with the landscape plan within the first planting season after the main building was finished, and any plant or trees damaged or killed had to be replaced.

Other conditions cover the installation of electricity and telephone cables, water for household use and firefighting, monitoring of the property, stormwater control and effluent disposal.

Upper Clutha Environmental Society president Julian Haworth said his committee would have to decide whether to appeal the decision.

"We like the design and colour scheme but would like the building to be shifted a little," he said.

Lake Wanaka Tourism chief executive John Hallum said he had no problems with the decision so long as everyone was treated fairly.

He said he was pleased the application had been approved.

"They (Twain and her husband) are nice people and I am sure they will make good citizens. Good luck to them."

Twain and Lange bought the property along with a neighbouring station last year after getting approval from the Overseas Investment Commission.

SHANIA TWAIN GREATEST HITS SECURES #1 BIGGEST COUNTRY GREATEST HITS DEBUT AND #2 BIGGEST OVERALL GREATEST HITS DEBUT SPOTS
11.18.2004

For the first time in history, Universal Music Group Nashville (UMGN) sweeps the #1, #2 and #3 spots on SoundScan’s Top Current Country Albums Chart.  Securing the top seat is Shania Twain with Shania Twain Greatest Hits.  Catapulting her first-ever greatest hits to all-time highs, Twain now holds the titles of biggest country greatest hits debut in the history of SoundScan and the second biggest greatest debut hits behind The Beatles.

Shania Twain Greatest Hits, the first ever greatest hits album from the multi-Grammy, multi-platinum-selling artist consists of 21 tracks; 17 of Twain’s chart-topping hits and three brand new songs, including the current smash duet “Party for Two.”  Twain is the only artist in history to have three consecutive 10x platinum certified albums (The Woman In Me, 12x platinum; Come On Over, 20x platinum and UP!, 10x platinum).  Come On Over is the best-selling record in SoundScan history.

The Shania Twain story has opened on a new and exciting chapter, and the only way is UP! That's the title of the much anticipated follow-up to Come On Over, the most successful female solo artist album of all time with world wide sales of an astonishing 34 million.

Follow that? You bet. The great news for Shania fans across the globe is that she's completed one of the most exciting and ambitious recording projects of the new millennium. Not to mention that she's totally energised by a fresh creative momentum that has led to her completing a spectacular new record, co-written with her husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.

Refreshed and ready to rock after a sabbatical at home in Switzerland in which she and Mutt became parents for the first time, there's a buzz coming from Shania like an electrical charge. "We wanted to put something together that was bigger and better," she glows, "and the whole thing IS so much bigger and better than anything I've done in the past."

"The whole record has been made differently, we travelled around a lot more, we used musical influences from all over the world. We used Indian musicians recorded directly in Mumbai, India; some of the American musicians were recorded in the Caribbean; a 40-piece orchestra recorded in Ireland; other musicians in Italy; and we literally hopped from city to city song-writing, including Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Provence and The Grenadine Islands. This music came together in smaller pieces over a longer period of time."

Leading the way as the first single from this extraordinary new project is the absolutely irresistible I'm Gonna Getcha Good! "That was an obvious single," she says. "There is a typical Shania attitude in the lyric, a definite female confidence. It's all about a girl who knows what she wants, she not only knows how to get it, but she's going to get it good."

"In my experience it's more typical to run into guys with such confidence when it comes to women, once again I thought it would be fun to write with that same confidence, but from a woman's point of view. I wanted the first single to reflect that playful attitude, because I want people to relate to the Shania they already know, at the same time as hearing a new, fresh sound."

Shania is thrilled with the development of her vocal technique on the album, an evolution that Mutt wholeheartedly encouraged. "It is different. Mutt was able to bring out a presence in my voice that I usually only use when I'm song-writing with my acoustic guitar. I didn't realise that I was singing with a slightly different voice on the microphone. It's like being in front of a camera, unless you forgot it's there, you kind of act a little differently. Mutt stayed on it until he got the natural, more intimate vocal sound he loves in my voice."

Other highlights on the album? Shania could name as many as there are tracks, but here are a few particulars. "Ka-Ching! is one of my top five, probably one of my top three, because it does have the Shania cheekiness to it, but I think it's a pretty fair observation of where we're at, in terms of how commercial society has become, almost globally."

"I also like the lyrics on In My Car (I'll Be The Driver) - 'don't care if you sleep with your socks on, you can hurt my head with your favourite rock song.' In other words, you can be in control of all the other things in our lives, but in my car, I am the driver! UP!, the title track, has some really fun things, 'even my skin is acting weird, wish that I could grow a beard'. One of my other favourites is I'm Jealous, it's one of those songs that's so descriptive, you can see and feel it happening. Juanita is a song I got a bit deeper with lyrically. In our most vulnerable times, whether we're searching for strength, courage or freedom, it's our female power (our Juanita) that we need to connect with."

"It's keeping it real lyrically, that's just my approach, it is very conversational which is very much the way the last two albums were written and those were the songs people related to the best, saying things the way I would have spoken them."

Shania plans to start pre-production for a new tour early in 2003, eager to make the same personal connection with her fans that produced such sensationally successful results on the Come On Over world tour. "I have a lot of fun with the touring, it's the biggest reward," she says. "I can see on their faces what the songs mean to them. I'm affected by music, when I sit and listen I'm high by it, so when I see I'm affecting them the same way, I really feel I've done what I came to do."

Meanwhile, is one of the biggest-selling recording artists in the world feeling the pressure of following a 34 million-seller? In short, no. "I don't have any anxiety about the success of this record. My goal isn't to outsell Come On Over. I just really want to know what people think of it. I'm excited to get the feedback."

That's why, even with her place in the world's musical elite guaranteed and undisputed, the only way is UP! for Shania Twain, because of the creative goals she has already achieved with the album even before it starts flying out of the stores. "Mutt and I as a team put more into this record than ever before," she confesses. "We really have gone totally all out, we've laboured over it and I'm completely thrilled with the results."

"I put this music on and I'm overwhelmed with emotion. It's been such a labour of love, and as I'm listening back sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry."

BEHIND THE MUSIC--SHANIA TWAIN--VH1 SPECIAL

SHANIA TWAIN - Filming her Behind the Music

It was mid-August, and I was up in Toronto, Canada at the Molson Amphitheater. Shania Twain's family had traveled down from their home town of Timmins to see their big sister. I had scheduled a morning shoot to interview her sister, Carrie Ann. Shania wanted to take her sister to lunch, so we had a short time slot and very few options as to where to do the interview. We shot the first half outside, among the seats of the amphitheater. Unfortunately, the stage crew was hammering, banging, and sound checking for that night's performance and we were forced to move indoors to a tiny room off the corridor to the backstage dressing rooms.

The cameraman had shut the door to the corridor after setting the lights, and had given everyone outside the room the high sign to be quiet, "we're filming." Once squeezed inside, with all our equipment, one cameraman, one soundman, myself and Carrie Ann, there was maybe enough space left for a cup of coffee. Finally, just as we were ready to resume the interview, Bradley says, "Oh, Shania's out there in the hallway."

"She is? Did you invite her to come in?" I asked. He looked at me somewhat blankly with a "that's not my job" kind of look. "Wait!" I said.

I got up, squeezed by the equipment to the door, and opened it. Standing out there, all 5 feet, 3 inches of her, sans make-up, was Shania. Dressed in blue jeans, sweatshirt jacket, baseball cap, she had her head down and looked as if she had been trying to listen through the door. "May I come in?" she asked tentatively, almost shyly. "I won't disturb my sister's interview. Ask her if it's okay."

Of course, she could come in. "Make yourself comfortable," I said, gesturing dramatically to the roomful of the equipment.

"Please continue, I'll be very quiet. Don't worry about me," Shania said as she scrunched herself down among several large equipment cases and cables. Squatting like they do in India - elbows on knees, hands resting on the brim of her baseball cap, her head glancing downwards at the floor, she listened as we continued her sister's interview. Fifteen or twenty minutes later, I asked Carrie Ann what it was like when she and Shania were working with their father, logging trees out in the bush. Both girls were teenagers then, but they could wield a chainsaw with no problem. Shania was in charge of one of the crews and supervised several men.

Carrie Ann was reminiscing about those days when all of a sudden, a voice from behind the equipment said, "Nope, that's not the way it happened. I remember that you hated being out there..." Shania then proceeded to describe her version of this time. The sisters argued good-naturedly back and forth while we kept the camera rolling on Carrie Ann. I was dying to whip the camera around to get Shania on film; however, I knew that she didn't want to be filmed without her make-up on, scrunched down beside a bunch of equipment, regardless of how much of a down-home kind of girl she can be. The sisters reminisced for about 15 minutes or so. This portion of the interview can be heard and seen on the raw footage. You see Carrie Ann on camera, but you hear Shania, who she still calls Eilleen, contesting their childhood stories.

It was probably this easy-going atmosphere between the VH1 film crew and Shania and her family that set the stage for us to film Shania with her brothers, sister and niece, squished together on a couch following her concert later that same evening. They all came in, plopped down on one couch and started talking unabashedly about their sister, Eilleen Twain, and what it was like growing up dirt poor in Timmins, Ontario. With Shania laughing and letting down her hair, surrounded by her loved ones, we got it all on camera.

Shania has become the first artist to have 8 top 10 country songs
from one album (Come On Over). Congratulations to Shania!!!

Come On Over is the top-selling album in Great Britain
for 1999. Congrats to Shania!

10 MOST INFLUENTIAL STARS PART ONE

Since Country Weekly began in 1994, these stars shaped, shook and steered the decade that followed

SHANIA TWAIN

Of all the superstars in country music, Shania Twain has come the farthest. From her impoverished beginnings in northern Ontario, Canada, she skyrocketed to international success in the mid-'90s, with scores of hits, armfuls of awards (including Entertainer of the Year honors from the CMA and ACM) and a position as the best-selling female country artist of all time.

What's more, she is the only artist in the history of recorded music to have three consecutive albums - The Woman in Me, Come on Over and her latest, Up! - sell more than 10 million copies each. But even that distinction pales next to the fact that Come on Over has sold over 35 million copies worldwide - and is the best-selling female solo album, the best-selling country album and one of the five top-selling albums in history!

Her beauty and sex appeal have captivated not only the world, but also Revlon cosmetics, which selected her as a national spokesperson. Shania also caught the eye of Hollywood networks, who have spotlighted her in national TV specials.

Not bad for a girl who once worked swinging an ax with her stepfather on a reforestation crew in the Canadian bush!

While Shania landed her record deal in large part because of her original material, her self-titled debut album in 1993 featured only one of her songs. But that changed after she met a long-distance admirer named Robert John "Mutt" Lange, a successful rock producer who loved her voice and her original songs.

He soon became her biggest supporter and later her husband. Living today in Switzerland with their son, Eja, the power couple has written, produced and recorded songs that have taken Shania's career into the stratosphere. And they've done it their way, with a style that's instantly identifiable and universally appealing.

Greatest Hits

Shania's name and face might be on the front cover, but her first greatest-hits album is really all about the success of her ongoing collaboration with husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.

Notice that although Greatest Hits spans 21 tracks, there's nothing here from Shania's Mutt-less first album - that's because the sound that made her a star only kicked in with his arrival for 1995's The Woman in Me. Shania charged the airwaves with a slick sound that combined catchy hooks, girl-power attitude and the slamming beats and head-on impact her husband learned during years of producing hard-rock acts like AC/DC and Def Leppard.

The formula worked again and again and again: Greatest Hits keeps it coming for well over an hour, each perfectly placed note and sleek, shiny beat still gleaming after all this time. Every Top 10 song Shania has racked up is here - including all eight from 1997's Come On Over - so it's hard to complain about the content. But it's easy to grumble about the awkward way this compilation is laid out - kicking off with last year's "Forever and for Always," it travels with near-total precision backward through time to her first Top 20, "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" Then it jerks back to the present with four new tracks, including two versions of the current hit, "Party for Two" - one featuring rock singer Mark McGrath and one with country's own Billy Currington. Fear not, country fan, Billy's is better - although both have the air of forced fun that crept into Shania's music with 2002's Up!

Better are the other two new songs, "Don't!" and "I Ain't No Quitter," both of which suggest a turn toward a more traditional country sound - and suggest that this marital team hasn't run out of steam quite yet.

FAST TRACK TWAIN

Where was Shania Twain the first week of November? Everywhere!

12-24-2004

The omnipresent superstar began her whirlwind week with a homecoming visit to her native Canada, where she cut the ribbon at the official opening of the Shania Twain Centre in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario.

She then visited her alma mater, Timmins High and Vocational School, and stopped by the W.E. Miller Elementary School, speaking about her work with the "Breakfast for Learning" program. The next day, Shania promoted her new Greatest Hits CD on the TV show Canada AM, hitting the ice with hockey pros and even cooking waffles. After that, it was off to Music City USA, where the musical tornado took over downtown Nashville for a live performance on Good Morning America of her new duet with Billy Currington, "Party for Two."

But Shania's party was only getting started. She stayed in Nashville for another jam-packed few days, during which her song "Forever and for Always" received the Country Song of the Year award and the Robert J. Burton Award as the Most Performed Country Song of the Year at the BMI Country Awards. And she also performed "Party for Two" with Billy on the CMA awards show Nov. 9.

"Without hit songs you cannot have a successful career," states Shania, who's topped the charts seven times. "No matter how much money's behind you. No matter how great your record company is. No matter who your management is. No matter what you look like. If you do not have hit songs, you will not be successful."

YEARBOOK 2004

It was a star-studded year of new faces, new attitudes and new adventures.
12-03-2004

In 2004, country saw earth-shaking change and comforting consistency. There were big entrances and heartbreaking exits, lawsuits and lawbreakers. A rebellious posse of newcomers, including Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich, helped Nashville break out of a sales slump. Meanwhile, Kenny Chesney took a firm grip on superstardom with mammoth hits and a record-smashing tour, and rockers like Jimmy Buffett and Uncle Kracker broke into country by teaming with established stars. But those weren't the only big stories ...

Tim McGraw and wife Faith Hill pushed into new territory, making well-received strides into the movies.

Country favorites like Reba McEntire and Jeff Foxworthy found big audiences on TV.

Shania Twain and Kenny ruled the road with the year's biggest tours.

Members of Lonestar, Rascal Flatts and Trick Pony got hitched. Sara Evans, Kenny Rogers and others welcomed new babies.

We bid sad farewells to legends like Ray Charles and Skeeter Davis.

Country stars traveled to hostile lands to buck up the morale of American troops.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain in stylized Montreal Canadiens jersey at 2003 Juno AwardsIt may surprise you to know that Shania Twain only has four major CD releases behind her, as her star power in Canada and across the globe is so strong. Her latest release Up, released November 1992, was her first in over five years (not counting re-mixes). She had taken a sabbatical to give birth to her first child and spend some time as a family. She came back to her work with impressive gusto. Promoting this CD release she performed at the Country Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the thirty-seventh Superbowl, hosted the 2003 Juno Awards with a dizzying wardrobe of stylized NHL Jerseys of all five current Canadian teams, and kicked off a new tour.

Fans love Shania and can't help but sing along to some of her high energy hits like Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, That Don't Impress Me Much, and I'm Gonna Getcha Good!.

Long before becoming the internationally recognizable musician she is today Shania started life in Windsor, Ontario. She was the second oldest of five children. As a child she was a bit of a recluse. Her parents discovered her musical talents when she was just a youngster, and they pushed her to perform. By age eight she would be woken up at 1 am (after serving hours) to perform at local bars. Her parents had her performing on television, radio, even at senior centres.

Shania's family was poor, and her mother put a lot of hopes on Shania and her musical talents. Unfortunately her mother has not lived to see her success. When Shania was only 21, both her parents were killed in an automobile accident. After this tragic event Shania buckled down to support her younger siblings. She found a job singing at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario, bought a house, and took upon the role as mother/sister.

Once her younger siblings grew up and went their own ways, Shania put all her effort into making a name for herself. She created a demo of all original songs, and luckily got it to the head of the Mercury Nashville label. And as they say, the rest is history.

Canadian government honors Shania

Shania Twain received the Order of Canada on Friday, the country's highest honor.

The citation said the Canadian-born singer's journey from a small Ontario town to the pinnacle of the entertainment industry has inspired countless other emerging musicians.

“Today, she enjoys enormous success, yet she remains true to her roots,” said the citation. “Dedicated to eliminating child hunger, she supports a number of food distribution agencies like food banks and breakfast programs in schools.”

Governor General Michaelle Jean, Canada's ceremonial head of state, pinned the Order of Canada medal on Twain's lapel during a ceremony in Ottawa.

The Order of Canada is the country's highest honor for lifetime achievement. The appointments were established in 1967 and are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, headed by the chief justice of Canada.

Twain's music has become a staple on country, pop and adult contemporary stations. At least three of her albums have topped the 10 million mark, with 1999's “Come On Over” reaching 20 million.

Naomi Judd to ride the rails to help

Naomi Judd will be riding the 63rd annual Santa Train in Kingsport, Tenn., helping deliver 15 tons of goodies and gifts to the chil-dren of Appalachia.

Donated by Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX Transportation and loaded with food and toys secured by grocer Food City of Abingdon, Va., the train trip kicks off the holiday season with a 110-mile trek to 15 communities in eastern Kentucky and Virginia.

The train arrives back in Kingsport in time for Santa to join the Christmas parade Saturday afternoon.

“CSX is honored to have Naomi Judd onboard this year. Her presence will bring additional excitement and help us make the holi-days brighter for hundreds of families in the area,” said Michael J. Ward, CSX chairman, president and CEO.

Judd, best known for her Grammy-winning duets with her daughter, Wynonna, also is the author of three children's books. She will have plenty of copies of her latest offering, “Gertie the Goldfish and the Christmas Surprise,” to give away.

Originally from Ashland, Judd says she is proud of her Kentucky heritage and is looking forward to sharing the Christmas spirit with the communities.

A camera crew from her new television show, “Naomi's New Morning,” will be tagging along to document Santa's guest helper. The show premieres Nov. 27 on the Hallmark Channel.

AC/DC guitarist tops list of little guys

Angus Young, lead guitarist of AC/DC, tops Maxim's list of the “25 greatest short dudes of all time,” standing tall at 5 feet 2 inches.

Former NBA guard Spud Webb, at 5 feet 7 inches, is No. 2, followed by Napoleon Bonaparte (5 feet 4 inches), weight lifter Naim Suleymangolu (4 feet 11 inches) and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (5 feet 2 inches).

The magazine, in its December issue, claims to be helping women “begin a long overdue fight against their genetically determined shallowness when choosing a partner.”

Aguilera goes off the available list

Christina Aguilera has found out what a girl wants, and now she's married him.

The 24-year-old pop singer tied the knot with music executive Jordan Bratman in a Saturday evening ceremony at Staglin Family Vineyard in northern California's Napa Valley, Us Weekly reported on its Web site.

Sources told the magazine that Aguilera, her hair decorated in jewels and pulled back in a bun topped by white flowers, walked down the aisle in a Christian Lacroix gown. The couple exchanged rings in front of about 130 guests.

Bratman, 28, proposed to Aguilera in February while on vacation in Carmel, Calif. Their hotel room was filled with rose pet-als, balloons and gift boxes.

“When I got to the last box, there was a ring in it,” Aguilera told People magazine. “He got down on one knee and said, ‘Will you do me the honor of being my wife?' I've been floating ever since.”

I do. It's something that I really, really enjoy. Something I love that's one of the main reasons why I got in the music business.

When did you start writing songs?

Gosh, I was probably 10 years old. I started playing around with my own tunes and music and words. It's something I eventually fell in love with.

When did you know that you had a real knack for writing songs?

You know, I guess early on because of the fact my family was so musical. The more I did it, the more courage I would get to play in front of people. People would encourage me to keep writing and started giving me tips. All of a sudden, I woke up one day and I was in Nashville doing it for a living.

Who else in your family plays music?

Everyone. My mom and my dad's side, both. Actually, that's how my mom and my dad met. They were playing in the same club together.

You probably got a lot of inspiration from them.

They probably are my biggest musical influences, my mother and my father. My dad is a real big influence on me musically. He taught me how to play piano. My mom plays guitar. So I have a real well-rounded foundation.

Do you sit down and tell yourself you're going to write a song ,or do you write when the inspiration hits you?

I think it's probably both. There are days I sit down and say I want to write a song. I want to write an up-tempo song or whatever, about whatever, trees. I sit down and try to make myself write it. Then there are times where I hear something, or something catches my eye; I jot it down. It comes very easily and very naturally.

Tell me about your work with Chicago. You've produced their forthcoming album.

That was a dream come true for me. They're one of my favorite bands in the world, and it was one of those things that I just couldn't pass up. It was a tough thing to juggle being in the Flatts and doing that record at the same time. When the opportunity came, it was a chance of a life time.

Did they seek you out, or did you offer to produce the record?

What happened was their bass player and lead singer, Jason Scheff, and I became really good friends. We started to write some music together. As time went on, we started doing more demos and writing together. [Other members of Chicago] started to hear what we were doing, and they approached me about producing the record. They said, "What you guys are doing already sounds like a Chicago record. So why don't you produce our next record?" They hadn't done a record in about 15 years. It was a really big chance for me to be involved with something I really, really believed in.

What do you think you brought to Chicago that maybe they wouldn't have had with another producer?

I think, given the Flatts' success, I have a really good handle on current music and today's pop music. They wanted to be back on the radio and make hits again. I think I definitely brought a fresh element of modern music to them.

When is the album due out?

It's set to be out in the fall right now.

Rascal Flatts is working on a new album, too, correct?

We're about two-thirds of the way done.

How will this album differ from "Feels Like Today"?

It's going to be really not too much different, just because of the fact what we've been doing so far has been working so well for us. We're not going to change up a whole lot of things. But we are working with a new producer, Dann Huff, who's really, really great because he comes from such a band-oriented place. He is a musician, and he knew how to track us and capitalize on the fact that we are a band. The [upcoming album] is definitely more of who we are. There's more of us on the record than probably any of the rest of the CDs. Based on that aspect alone, we're really, really excited about it.

Do you think that the band's cohesiveness comes from playing so many live shows?

I think so, and more experience and all the years that we've played together, getting to know one another musically, too. I think those are all key ingredients. Dann has been so helpful and so encouraging in saying, "Hey look, people need to hear more of you guys individually on these records." He said, "If there's any criticism I have, it's that the music sounds like a Nashville record, and it needs to sound like you guys." That's what we're real excited about.

What did you do to bring out the sounds of the individuals in the band?

We cut with just Joe Don and I. I played bass. Joe Don played guitar. We brought a drummer in, and Dan played acoustic and we cut like a four-piece rock band.

It sounds like it was a perfect environment in which to work.

It really was. It was such a great environment. We felt so much freedom. You don't have a room full of studio musicians sittin' around, twiddling their fingers and waitin' on you. You can really take the time and experiment a little bit.

Do you know when new album coming out?

We don't as of yet because we don't have all the vocals finished. I think we're looking at spring of next year right now.

OTTAWA (CP) - Country singer Shania Twain, hailed for a legendary rags-to-riches saga that has inspired millions, led a star-studded cast to receive an Order of Canada.

She was joined by the likes of speed skater Catriona Le May Doan, environmentalist Elizabeth May, chocolatier David Ganong and former Ontario lieutenant-governor Hilary Weston, along with 38 others, for the ceremony.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean made the presentations, which included 18 officers and 25 members of the order recognizing people who have made a difference to their country.

The citation making Twain an officer of the order says the rags-to-riches story of superstar Shania Twain has become legendary.

It adds that the native of Timmins, Ont., was instilled with a strong sense of pride by her family, despite living in poverty.

And even as a child, it says, music played an important role in her day-to-day life.

"Today, she enjoys enormous success, yet she remains true to her roots," says the citation.

"Dedicated to eliminating child hunger, she supports a number of food distribution agencies like food banks and breakfast programs in schools."

It says her journey from small-town Ontario to the pinnacle of the entertainment industry has inspired countless other emerging musicians.

Other recipients included:

-Le May Doan of Calgary, as an officer. Known as the "Fastest Woman on Ice," the retired skater won two Olympic golds and has been a positive role model for Canadians of all ages. "She remains a major force in amateur sport," said the citation, noting she serves in numerous professional and voluntary organizations, and is "dedicated to mentoring the next generation of athletes."

-May of Halifax, as an officer. Head of the Sierra Club of Canada, she has been an internationally respected voice for Canada's environmental movement for more than 30 years. Said her citation: "She has made a profound difference to the quality of life of Canadians in our lifetime and hopefully for generations to come."

-Ganong of St. Stephen, N.B., as a member. His family is a household name. A fourth-generation chocolatier, Ganong's citation calls him a "creative and visionary businessman" who has emphasized product innovation, employee satisfaction and solid community relations. "He is known as a national advocate of corporate governance, serving as a model of integrity and accountability in Canadian business."

-Weston of Toronto, as a member. As Ontario's 26th lieutenant-governor and only the second woman in the job, she served with grace and distinction, said her citation. "She championed community voluntarism and women's and youth issues during her mandate. She has been actively involved in numerous charities and not-for-profit organizations throughout her . . . life."

-Heather Bishop of Woodmore, Man., as a member. A internationally known entertainer, Bishop founded her own record company in 1976 and produced several acclaimed folk and children's albums. "Highly admired for her social activism, she has championed women's rights and has spoken out against racism and homophobia." She helped develop and teach groundbreaking pre-trades women's training courses at Red River College in Winnipeg.

Other officers inducted Friday were:

Former B.C. premier David Barrett of Victoria, Simon Brault of Montreal, John Cunningham of Camrose, Alta., James Hogg of Vancouver, Marcel Junius of Quebec City, James Kudelka of Vittoria, Ont., Rita Lafontaine of Montreal, Jacques Lamarre of Montreal, Rita Letendre of Toronto, Ronald Mannix of Calgary, William Sauder of Vancouver, Eldon Smith of Calgary, James Stanford of Calgary, Ronald Tasker of Toronto and Bruce Trigger of Montreal.

Other new members are:

Paul Bosc of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., Peter Busby of Vancouver, Allan Ian Carswell of Thornhill, Ont., Wallace Chung of Vancouver, Denzil Doyle of Kanata, Ont., Thelma Finlayson of Burnaby, B.C..

Clarence Tillenius of Winnipeg, Muriel Venne of Edmonton, Garrett Warner of Hamilton, Rev. Gordon Winch of Toronto, Carol Young of Halifax, Thomas Zuber of Windsor, Ont.

The Order of Canada is the country's highest honour for lifetime achievement. Three different levels of membership honour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope: companion, officer and member.

The appointments were established in 1967 and are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, headed by the chief justice of Canada.

Shania Twain introduces Martha Stewart to the poutine experience on TV
at 12:32 on November 15, 2005, EST.

(CP) - Martha Stewart called it junk food.

But superstar Shania Twain insisted it should be termed a "Canadian comfort food." Poutine, the Quebec-originated snack made from an artery-clogging recipe of french fries, gravy and cheese curds, was on the menu Tuesday for Stewart's daytime TV show.

Prior to her evening appearance on the Country Music Awards, the music diva dropped in on Stewart, donned a white apron, and proceeded to educate the domestic diva about the joys of poutine (which Stewart pronounced poo-tin').

"I have never made poutine, something called poutine, and actually I've never even eaten poutine," confessed Stewart.

"Oh, it's heartbreaking," lamented Twain when Stewart insisted the Internet described the snack as a Canadian junk food.

When asked if poutine means "mess" in French, Twain confessed she didn't know.

"This actually smells good," added a surprised Stewart as the recipe came together, but neither celebrity sampled it on camera.

In the end, it proved to be a more high-end dish, though, than what eastern Canadians might purchase at a roadside chip stand. The gravy was based on Shania's own recipe which includes white wine and mushrooms, but the singer stressed that there were too many mushrooms in the final result.

Twain also took questions from the audience.

Her favourite song? The Beatles' Yesterday.

Her favourite exercise? Fast walking. To an ice cream store.

But she said she hadn't decided at the time what dress she would be wearing for the awards telecast. She also spoke about her favourite charity, the Second Harvest Food Bank. Stewart donated an autographed hat for Twain's planned charity auction.

TWAIN PONDERS NEW MUSIC GENRE

Country singer-turned-pop star SHANIA TWAIN has no idea what music genre to tackle on her eagerly awaited seventh album.

The Canadian beauty, who lives in Switzerland with her husband ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE and son EJA, is releasing her Greatest Hits album next month (NOV04) and is set to go into the studio next year (05) with a new direction.

She explains, "I need to write again. So I don't know when the next album's going to be. I don't know when the next tour is going to be. And I think that what this album represents, for me, this greatest hits, is a period of pause.

"I've entertained the idea of doing a really rootsy, country sound; it would be more on the bluegrass side. Would I want to do a straight-ahead pop record?

"I've entertained the thoughts of doing just duets with all my favourite artists. I've thought of maybe doing an album of covers of my favourite classics. And so what kind of album is the next album going to be? I don't know. I have to think about it a little more."

TWAIN: 'MY FAN BASE IS WIDER THAN BRITNEY'S'

Country music beauty Shania Twain refuses to panic that both her and BRITNEY SPEARS are releasing greatest hits albums on the same day, insisting her fan base is wider than the TOXIC star's.

The MAN! I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN! singer - who has sold close to 80 million albums during her career - will be relaxed when her disc hits record store shelves on 9 November (04) because she is so confident in her popularity.

She says, "I don't think it's going to interfere at all on a competitive level, because we have such completely different audiences. There's some crossover, sure. But my fan base is so wide that I can't imagine that their parents are buying Britney's album. Their parents are buying my album. Their grandparents are buying my album. So it's a different audience in that sense, but there's probably some crossover there.

"Besides, things are long-term. I've got three singles on this CD. This isn't just about the first day. This isn't just about the first week. My records never have been anyway. This is about what's going to happen over the following year."

TWAIN: 'I'M NOT PREGNANT'

Shania Twain has hit out at rumours she is expecting her second child with record producer husband ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE.

Recent reports claim the 39-year-old singer had made the most of her time away from the studio to become pregnant with a brother or sister for three-year-old son EJA.

But Twain insists the couple are still too busy enjoying the novelty of being parents, to think about adding to their family.

She says, "He's beautiful and we're having such a great time. If it happened, it would be an accident, let's put it that way. We're not planning another one. I'd always welcome another child, but we're not going to plan for it. And we're quite happy the way we are. We've got so much to look forward to, with the (UP!) tour ending, and Eja's going to be starting school in a year or so.

"I look forward to all those things. I won't want him to start school earlier than he has to. I'd like to wait until he's five if I can."

She says, "People are very discreet there, and I'm enjoying my private life. In the US or in Canada, you could just forget about that."

TWAIN NOT INTERESTED IN LIFE STORY MOVIE

Shania Twain is encouraging fans not to watch a new Canadian TV biopic about her - because it doesn't have her blessing and won't feature the full truth about her life.

The singer, who grew up in Timmins, Ontario, Canada, insists she hasn't gone out of her way not to be helpful to producers of the film project - she just doesn't like to talk about her tough childhood.

She says, "They are not going to get it right because they don't know me.

"I am not trying to hide anything, but there are things I can't discuss, a lot of what was in my childhood. That whole period was quite dark, and not everything is known."

Twain says, "I caught sight of him last time I was over in England, and he is one fine-looking man.

"I really like the whole package of him and his wife. They are very glam.

"I hate the way they claim that he is simple. How can he be when he's so gifted on the pitch?"

September 30: Shania Twain set new attendance records as she launched off her UP! World Tour, setting an all-time record at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario with an attendance of 18,573 and a record-setting gross of $1,282,984 (USD). Shania followed with a sell-out crowd in Ottawa, Ontario, and another record, grossing $1,195,587 (USD)... See Shania World Tour.

August 19: Shania was ranked #8 in the Askmen.com "Top 99 Most Desirable Women" list for 2003, the highest ranked music artist and only country artist included. She should honestly be #1-2 on any of these lists (Maxim #2 this year), but all these polls tend to be silly and quite subjective. Based on combined votes of staff and readers.

August 15: Shania won the "Best International Artist" award and performed her new single "Thank You Baby" at the Comet Awards, presented by Viva and RTL (Germany).

July: Shania's UP! album was IFPI certified 2X Platinum, for 2 million unit sales across Europe as of July, 2003. UP! worldwide sales are now at 9 million.

June 25: Shania was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Shania and 10 other inductees attended a gala ceremony honouring their accomplishments at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

June 10: Shania's "You're Still the One" has been ranked #47 of the "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years," as chosen by VH1.

May 16: In addition to being MAXIM Magazine's June cover girl, Shania is #2 on their "Hot 100" Women of 2003 list.

April, 2003: Shania's new UP! 2-CD album has officially been certified for worldwide sales of over 8 million in under 5 months... on "1 1/2" singles (only one in some markets, two in others). She's at about 4.5 million actual US sales (SoundScan plus one club, full-price sales) and a 5M certification. Considering minimal US radioplay and promo, not approaching the best singles off the album, and flat-out US label non-performance, the album's doing well. Though Shania's UP! 2-CD 38 track album qualifies for double cerfication for each "packaged unit" sold, she has insisted that her double-album be counted as only a single-disc album. She may be the only artist with enough class to make that decision -- for her two 74 minute CDs recorded separately with different musicians (not remixed). She wrote and recorded the album as a "pure gift" to her fans, many of whom listen to various genres of music and have eclectic musical tastes, just as she does.

Shania's SUPERLATIVE "Come On Over" album has now been certified for sales of 19 million in the U.S. (as of 3/19/02) and 36 million in total sales to date. At 19M in the US, "Come On Over" extends its lead as the best-selling female solo album ever, and the best-selling country album of all time. Though ranks of the top-selling albums fluctuate, it is now tied as the 5th best selling album in history (the other albums ranked 1-5 were released from the '60s to mid '80s). "Come On Over" is also the best-selling album by any artist or group in the SoundScan era (since 1991). Shania is the first female artist in history with back-to-back 10M "diamond" plus CDs ("The Woman In Me" at 12 million U.S./18 million total, without any formal international release). Shania is also the first female artist in history to have two SOLO albums sell over 11 million units each in the U.S. Shania's international album sales have been staggering as well, with huge success in virtually every country of release. 3/13/02: Shania was voted Canadian celeb with the "most beautiful smile" for the second straight year in the Johnson & Johnson REACH(R) Whitening Floss Survey, again winning 40 per cent of the vote (second place had just 15%).

11/6/01: Though Shania has been musically inactive for nearly two years, she still received another award at the 2001 BMI Country Awards. "You've Got A Way" was one of the Top 50 Most Performed Country Songs of the Year... Shania was honored as BMI Pop and Country Songwriter of the Year in 1999 and 2000, with "Most Performed" song awards for virtually every single released from her "Come On Over" album. Shania has now won a total of 23 BMI Country and Pop Awards for her songwriting.

5/28/01: Shania received a 2001 World Music Award for "Best Selling Canadian Artist." Based strictly on sales, awards were given out in 18 "geographic" categories, in addition to another 15 genre/male-female/new artist categories. Since she won the Best Selling Country Artist in 1996, some of the WMA categories change from year to year on a whim, so this is very minor news. Several other major Canadian stars are also taking time off from their careers or are between albums.

5/7/01: Shania's "That Don't Impress Me Much" is ranked #77 by VH1 (US) for their new May 2001 special "The 100 Greatest Videos." Comment: Every Shania video has outstanding elements. Realize this Top 100 list is very subjective (debatable), and that VH1 selected from only five Shania videos that aired on VH1: YSTO, FTMO, TDIMM, YGAW, and MIFLAW. VH1 staff have not seen most of Shania's other (CMT/country) videos, many of which were uniquely innovative in the genre for their time.

3/7/01: Shania's "You're Still The One" ranked 293 in a list of 365 "Songs of the Century" compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts. The list includes a selection songs from all genres of music and all decades. This list was compiled from only 200 ballots of 1300 sent out to musicians, critics, industry professionals, elected officials and amateur music fans, according to an RIAA spokeswoman. Voters chose from a list of 1,100 songs "selected for popularity and historical significance." The NEA/RIAA list was released to highlight a new music-history education project to be introduced to 10,000 fifth-grade teachers next fall. Suggestion: Teachers and students might be better off researching and compiling their own lists. Several patriotic anthems aside, this ranking simply adds bureaucracy to subjectivity and a non-statistical ballot spread to produce a less than educational, irrelevant result.

Shania's "Come On Over" was the #10 top selling album (pop/all-genre) in Europe during 2000, a testament to both its quality and fan response (in its third year of release there). Combined with its #2 European album rank during 1999, "Come On Over" has been the top selling album over the two year span... "Come On Over" was ranked #14 in the (CNN Worldbeat) Global Top 100 albums of 2000 (in its 2nd/3rd year of release in most territories).

Shania was voted Canadian celeb with the best smile in a recent Johnson & Johnson Reach Whitening Floss survey, garnering 40% of the vote (2nd place had just 11%).

For those unaware of the nominating process, Shania is a multiple ACM winner and the reigning 2000 ACM Entertainer of the Year, but since she has not had new music out in some time, she was not eligible this year.

For those unaware of the nominating process, Shania is a 5-time Grammy winner, but since she has not had new music out in some time, she was not eligible this year... Shania's NEW album is finally coming in 2001, with her next world tour to follow.

12/1/00: Shania won the "Best International Female Vocalist Of The Year" award at the 2000 M6 Awards in France. Shania could not attend the ceremony (working full time on her new album), but she did record a thank you message in French. Clip at Shania M6 Thanks.

Shania was voted Canadian celeb with the best smile in a recent Johnson & Johnson Reach Whitening Floss survey, garnering 40% of the vote (2nd place had just 11%).

Here's a new one just for fun. Having already topped many "most beautiful & sexiest" lists for music, film & TV in recent years, Shania has now been voted "Sexiest Vegatarian Alive" by the readers of Animal Times, the magazine of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Shania's "Come On Over" was voted in 2000 as one of the "New Classics" Top 5 (all genres of music) by barnesandnoble.com. Other albums were: U2's "The Joshua Tree," Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales," Madonna's "Ray Of Light" and Andrea Bocelli's "Romanza."

Shania's "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" was voted in 2000 by VH1 (US) viewers as the #5 song by a "diva" of all time.

Shania was again recognized for her songwriting at the SOCAN Awards (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) in Toronto 11/20/00. Five of Shania's songs were awarded for most genre airplay in 1999: "From This Moment On"; Man! I Feel Like A Woman"; That Don't Impress Me Much"; You're Still The One"; and "You've Got A Way." Shania was unable to attend, as she remains in Europe recording her next album.

Shania Milestones: After the 2000 CMA show, Shania attended the private Mercury party, where her label presented her with 3 plaques to commemorate her sales achievements: US Sales of over 17 million for Shania’s "Come On Over" album; worldwide sales of over 30 million for "Come On Over" (both noted previously); and combined worldwide sales of over 50 million for her three albums - "Shania Twain," "The Woman In Me," and "Come On Over." Note that "Shania Twain" was never released internationally until 2000 in selected countries, and "The Woman In Me" was not released internationally (except in Australia two years delayed) until 2000 (import availability only). "Come On Over" was step-released internationally starting in 1998.

Shania was again honored as BMI Songwriter of the Year 10/3/00 at the annual BMI Country Awards. She received the inaugural Songwriter/Artist Crystal for writing three of the most performed country songs of the year: "Come On Over," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" and "That Don’t Impress Me Much." Shania collected both the BMI Country Songwriter and Song of the Year ("You’re Still The One") honors last year, and has been the BMI Pop Songwriter of Year the past two years. Shania has now won a total of 22 BMI Country and Pop Awards for her songwriting.

Shania won for her great clip "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" (Director: Paul Boyd, Producer: Jeff Nelson for Propaganda Films) in the "MuchMoreMusic Award" category at this year's Much Music Video Awards, held 9/21/00, at Much Music in Toronto. For fans outside of Canada, MMM is an adult oriented pop/rock/jazz channel with music video content analagous (though more inclusive) than VH1. MMM is sister network to Much Music, which is similar to MTV.

Shania was named Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year. The ACM Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles at Universal Amphitheater 5/3/00, and broadcast on CBS. Note for new fans: Shania's "Come On Over" album was not eligible for album of the year... Shania was physically unable to attend the ACM Awards on 5/3, due to her continued full-time work writing & recording her two new albums (in Europe). Thanks to the Academy members for recognizing her unique accomplishments over this past eligibility year, and to her fantastic fans for their loyal support and patience. Shania's new music is coming... See Next For Shania...

You may want to check out photos & exclusives from the last award show Shania was able to attend, the 1999 CMAs, at CMA Entertainer of the Year page.

For the second consecutive year Shania was named BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year for all genres of music - due to combined airplay of her smash hits "You're Still The One," "From This Moment On," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!", "That Don't Impress Me Much," and "You've Got A Way." Shania has now collected 19 BMI songwriting Awards in both pop and country.

Shania was selected "Favorite Female Country Artist" in the 6th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards held 5/9/00 in Los Angeles. The actual show will be broadcast on Fox 6/20/00. Most winners outside of the film world of LA could not attend, including Shania who is working full-time on two new albums. This is the largest fan-voted awards show, however the music "categories" were by genre only. Nominations are not fan-voted and supposedly based on retail activity, but only within the Blockbuster chain (music stores recently purchased by The Wherehouse). So for example, Shania was not even nominated in the "pop" category, which cannot be explained by actual sales criteria.

Shania was nominated in four catagories for the prestigious Novello Songwriting Awards. Shania's "You're Still The One" is up for Best Song (lyrics & music), and "That Don't Impress Me Much" for Most Performed Work, International Hit of the Year and Best-Selling UK Single. The Novella Awards, presented by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, was held in London 5/25. Editorial Note: These awards are similar to the BMI Awards in the US, where Shania has won for Song of the year (1999) and Songwriter of the Year the past two years. The winners were very deserving, but just a note to remind fans that there is an understandable UK slant for performers. Also, Shania was/is new to most industry "shirts" in the UK, and her nominated songs were very unique yet unusual lyrically: sincere, direct, and often humerously insightful - and that "connection" her music made with the public helped make her "Come On Over" album the #1 selling UK album of the year.

Shania earned 2 NEW Juno Awards from the CARAS: Songwriter of the Year (main category/all genres) for "That Don't Impress Me Much," "You've Got A Way," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" (Shania and R.J. Lange, songwriters) & Best Country Female Artist. The Juno Awards ceremony was split into two parts this year, 3/11 and 3/12, with the latter night's awards broadcast on CBC-TV. Shania was selected Best Country Female Artist again in the 3/11/00 ceremony.

Shania won 2 NEW Grammy Awards from the NARAS 2/23/00 (her 4th and 5th): Best Female Country Vocal Performance - "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" and Best Country Song - "Come On Over" (Shania and R.J. Lange, songwriters). Notes: Shania's "Come On Over" album was not eligible this year. Shania was also nominated for the second strait year for Song of the Year (main category/all genres) - "You've Got A Way" (Shania and R.J. Lange, songwriters)... Last year she became the first "genre" artist ever to be nominated in all three major all-genre categories (Album, Record and Song: 6 noms, two wins).

Cable video channel CMT selected their Top 2000 Videos of all time (to date, through 1999). Shania dominated with four videos in the top ten: #2 "Any May of Mine," #5 "You're Still the One," #8 "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" & #10 "That Don't Impress Me Much."

Shania's "Come On Over" has been certified for "Double Diamond" for 20X Platinum/2 million units sold in Canada (1/00). Her "The Woman In Me" album was previously certified "Double Diamond" in 3/99. Shania is the first Canadian artist to achieve Double Diamond sales certifications for two consecutive albums.

Shania was voted "Favorite Female Artist (Pop/Rock)" and "Favorite Female Artist (Country)" at the 27th Annual American Music Awards. Thanks to all of you who have been touched by Shania's music and were kind enough to vote for her. Shania has admitted that she generally has no idea when she is even nominated for awards... Shania was unable to attend AMAs, or any other awards or public appearances so far this year, due to her hectic schedule (working hard on her next albums in Europe), but she she is truly grateful. AMA nominations were determined by Soundscan sales and radio airplay data (R&R), with the winners then voted on by a statistical random sample of about 20,000 music buyers nationwide (USA).

Shania was named "Favorite Female Musical Performer" at the 26th Annual "People's Choice Awards" 1/9/00. Nominations and awards are publicly voted, determined by statistically random Gallup polling. Thanks to all those who supported Shania.

Shania was selected as "Entertainer of the Year" in Radio & Records’ annual readers’ poll (prominent trade industry music publication).

Shania was named "Female Country Artist of the Year" in Playboy's 2000 reader poll, repeating her win from '99.

Shania had a great '99 thanks to the fans who discovered "Come On Over" and saw her on tour. She ranked #12 in Forbes Magazine's latest Celebrity 100 issue, a (rather nebulous) ranking of celebrities & public figures in all professional fields, in theory based on "earnings, influence and popularity."

Shania's #1 VOTED all-time favorite "Behind The Music" episode aired on VH1 2/13 at 9pm ET/PT. Thanks for your support.

Shania was selected 1999 "CMA Entertainer of the Year" and received a special "International Artist Achievement" Award for her unprecedented musical contributions to the world music scene in the past year. Shania is the first woman in 13 years to win the CMA "Entertainer" Award.

Shania is CMT Canada's #1 Artist once again, with the #1 video of 1999 "That Don't Impress Me Much," her "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" at #4, and "You've Got A Way" at #14.

Shania won her second consecutive (and third overall) "Female Artist of the Year" award from CMT US, with her two great videos in the '99 Top 12, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" and "That Don't Impress Me Much."

Shania was the top winner 11/9/99 at the 1999 SOCAN Awards, which recognize the Canadian songwriters that received the most airplay in the previous year. Shania received awards for her smash hits "You're Still the One," "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," and "From this Moment On" in the country category.

Editorial: PEOPLE Magazine's tedious "50 Most Beautiful People" issue is out 4/28/00, and yes Shania IS included. Some facts for the record: Shania was one of PEOPLE's "25 Most Fascinating People" of 1995. What nobody knows is that Shania WAS also selected for their "Most Beautiful" 1996 Issue, but PEOPLE broke professional ethics and inexplicably removed Shania (for "political" reasons) without ever informing her then management. Shania was apparently selling too many CDs... Since (not so) strangely ONLY Time/Warner (parent company of "People") music label artists appeared in that issue. Total scam. Now they "have" to include her... and inclusion still does not explain her omission from any "most beautiful" issue since 1995. The process is still political and silly. The issue does not merit attention yet still has to be mentioned.

Shania was named one of "US" Magazine's Top 8 sexiest female stars (5/8 issue).

Shania was named to "Ralph" Magazine's (Australian mens' lifestyle mag.) "Sexiest Women" of 2000 list, though "only" at 46 of 100. A publication that is musically challenged and has denigrated hers, so you can't expect too much.

If the true scope of sensation could be measured in water, then Shania is Niagara Falls.
Her pleasant, if unremarkable, new country fare has made her a multi-million seller and something of a national heroine to boot. The fact that she's prettier than anyone on Friends doesn't hurt things, either.

Before Shania Twain hooked up with Robert John "Mutt" Lange--who co-wrote, then produced her breakthrough album Woman in Me (and in the process, fell in love with and married her) -- she seemed headed for a career as a garden-variety female country singer, lovely of voice and visage but unspectacular in almost every other way. Lange, who previously was known as the producer of such 1980s arena-rock acts as Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and the Cars, brought out the best in Twain, both in terms of the material they co-wrote and the pop/rock sheen he lent the album via his production.

Following her smash hit The Woman In Me was no easy task for Shania and husband/producer Mutt Lange.
With Come On Over the sexy vixen of modern country has carved out a bigger niche for herself that is sure to please her growing throng of fans. With a huge helping of rock and roll added to her country trimmings, Twain proves her success has been no fluke. As a rule, she goes out of her way to break the traditional Nashville mold. Even her songwriting skills are at the forefront; Shania and Mutt co-wrote all the songs on this collection.

[BOX SET] - Shania Twain

It is a must have for any music fan, not just country.
There are so many different styles on this C.D. that I am sure there is something for everyone.

THE WOMAN IN ME won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Any Man Of Mine" was nominated for Grammys for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. Shania Twain was nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Shania Twain

Now from north of the 49th parallel comes Shania Twain, even if her debut is firmly in the modern Nashville mould that's rather bigger on ballads than actual emotion. Still, there's a folksy edge to her voice which can turn appealingly blue on Forget Me and Got A Hold On Me, while There Goes The Neighbourhood and the delightful Dance With The One That Brought You suggest that she could go the distance, given the right songs.

putting a show together. It's like building a house. You're going to
live in it for a year." --Shania Twain

Shania Twain is no stranger to conscience, sizzle and the woman's prerogative. Come On Over is her third album (Mercury Records), sixteen songs written by Shania with her husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. This is Shania's first new release in more than two and a half years, since the twelve-million-selling worldwide phenomenon known as The Woman In Me. That album, which has sold over three million copies outside the United States, continues its record-breaking run on the Billboard Country Albums chart: 140-plus weeks (and counting) as of the November 1997 release of Come On Over. For her achievements, Shania earned Billboard honours as 1996's #1 Top Country Album Artist. Her Grammy Award for Best Country Album was echoed by both the Academy of Country Music and the Canadian Country Music Awards for Album of the Year. She was variously named Favourite New Country Artist of Favourite Female Country Artist by the American Music Awards, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards and the World Music Awards. Her videos earned similar awards from CMT, ABC Radio Networks and others. One of the most telegenically accessible figures on the planet, her promo video clips were compiled on The Complete Woman In Me Video Collection. At the same time, magazine profiles ranged from Time and Newsweek to Esquire, People and Entertainment Weekly. She has performed at the CCMA Awards, the American Music Awards, the Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards, World Music Awards, the gala for President Clinton at Ford's Theatre, CNN Showbiz Today, Vanessa Williams' Christmas Special, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and much more. On September 24, 1997 viewers of the CMA Awards were treated to a performance of Love Gets Me Every Time, the first single from Come On Over. Love Gets Me Every Time is typical of the fun-loving sense of humour that Shania lets loose throughout Come On Over, on such titles as Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) and That Don't Impress Me Much. Fans will appreciate her good-natured Honey, I'm Home, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, and the house-shakin' Rock This Country. She also draws serious attention to herself as one of today's strongest ballad writers and singers in From This Moment On, a moving duet with Bryan White. Shania's own sense of being part of a committed couple is put on the line in You're Still The One and When. Other standouts include the Tex-Mex flavoured I Won't Leave You Lonely and the final track You've Got A Way. Songs such as Black Eyes, Blue Tears (an upbeat tribute to re-discovering self-esteem and freedom in the wake of an abusive relationship) and If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask! go a long way towards explaining Shania's decision to maximize the impact of her newest album. "There was so much that I wanted to achieve," she insists, "I couldn't have done it in any less than 16 songs --every one of them makes this album feel complete to me. Maybe it's because of the time I was given, I just felt like I couldn't leave any one of them out." Shania's story may well be the great American dream; that is, the great North American dream since Shania is from Canada. Born August 28, 1965, the second oldest of five siblings, Shania was raised in Timmins, Ontario where her father (an Ojibway Indian) and mother were also brought up. It was a proud but, at times, impoverished existence. There may have been a struggle to keep enough food in the cupboards but there was always an abundance of love and music in the household. Shania often grabbed a guitar and retreated to the solitude of her bedroom, singing and writing until her fingers ached. "But I loved it! I grew up listening to Waylon, Willie, Dolly, Tammy, all of them," she recalls. "But we also listened to the Mamas and the Papas, the Carpenters, the Supremes and Stevie Wonder. The many different styles of music I was exposed to as a child not only influenced my vocal style but, even more so, my writing style." Mom noticed her daughter's talents, and Shania was soon being shuttled to radio and TV studios, community centres, senior citizens' homes, "everywhere they could get me booked". Part of the legend has eight-year-old Shania being dragged out of bed at midnight, to sing with the house band at a local club after the nightly liquor curfew went into effect. Later, she spent summers working with her father as foreman of a dozen-man reforestation crew in the Canadian bush, where she learned to wield an axe and handle a chainsaw as well as any manjack. In the winter season, she would sing in clubs and do as many television and radio performances as her studies would allow. At age 21, Shania lost her parents in an auto wreck. She then took the task of handling her parents affairs as executrix of the estate and the responsibility of bringing her three younger siblings to live with her. She managed to keep the household going with a live-in entertainment job at Deerhurst Resort. This not only provided her family with new challenges but also gave her an education in every aspect of theatrical performance, from musical comedy to Andrew Lloyd Webber to Gershwin, an experience quite different from the bar gigs she grew up doing. After a couple of years the kids came into their own, lightening the load of her responsibilities. It was 1990, and she was on her own. Shedding her real name, Eileen, she adopted the Ojibway name Shania, pronounced shu-NYE-uh, meaning "I'm on my way." Which she was, with a demo tape of original music and a road map to Nashville. Although Shania was signed on the basis of that original material, her self-titled debut album of 1993 featured only one of her songs, the feisty God Ain't Gonna Getcha For That. It took a phone call from a distant admirer, rock producer Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, Foreigner, The Cars and many others) for Shania to find a true believer, both in her voice and her own songs. Shania and Mutt met face to face in 1993. By December they'd written half an album's worth of tunes together, and their musical partnership had blossomed into something much more. They were wed before the new year. As 1994 unfolded, they traveled (and wrote) their way across the U.S., Canada, England, Spain, Italy and the Caribbean. They began to lay down basic tracks for the new album in Nashville, later recording overdubs and mixing in Quebec. The first results of their labour, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? entered the Billboard Country Singles chart in January 1995. The Woman In Me debuted on the Country Albums chart the following month, and has been there ever since! The single rose to #11 (#2 in Canada), and sales of the album just kept getting stronger. The next four singles were consecutive Number Ones in America, and the awards and critical praise began to pour in. Two more singles were released in late 1996, Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore), and the lullaby-hymn God Bless The Child, with proceeds from the latter donated (at Shania's request) to Kids Cafe/Second Harvest Food Bank in the US and the Canadian Living Foundation, which provides meals for underprivileged children. Altogether, Shania's run on the singles chart spanned well over 100 weeks, an amazing achievement from one album and no touring.

Pop beauty SHANIA TWAIN has today (18NOV05) been named an officer of the Order of Canada for her charity work and "trail blazing" attitude to music.

The award-winning singer, now based in Switzerland, was honoured alongside fellow Canadians artist RITA LETENDRE and Olympic champion CATRIONA LE MAY DOAN.

Governor-General MICHAëLLE JEAN said of Twain, "Today, she enjoys enormous success, yet she remains true to her roots.

"There is something in the Canadian psyche that makes us shrink back from self-congratulations.

"We must not allow our modesty to overshadow our recognition of those Canadians who give so much to our country and to the world."

Jean added Twain, who is widely recognised as a positive role model, has lived up to "the Order of Canada".

MAY 19, 2005

New Zealand officials are trying to stop country superstar SHANIA TWAIN and her producer husband ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE from developing their new South Island home - because they fear it will look awful.

The celebrity couple have reportedly paid $15 million (GBP7.9 million) for a sprawling Merino sheep farm, and have big plans to turn the place into their dream estate.

But local architects and developers are opposed to the couple's plans because they fear they're not in harmony with the local landscape, and will be visible for miles.

A major planning meeting has been called to discuss and decide the matter next week (beg23MAY05).

JUNE 30, 2005

Shania Twain and her producer husband ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE have won their battle to revamp their sheep farm in New Zealand after a year-long battle with local authorities.

The pop couple have been given permission to build a compound on the farm near Lake Wanaka in the South Island, despite complaints from locals that the planned development would not blend in with the surrounding landscape.

Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the development earlier this week (beg27JUN05), which gives the couple permission to build on the 61,000-acre estate.

Country star SHANIA TWAIN relaxed before she took on presenting duty at Tuesday night's (15NOV05) Country Music Association Awards by horse-riding around lifestyle queen MARTHA STEWART's home in upstate New York.

The new best friends filmed their Sunday (13NOV05) canter in the countryside for Stewart's daily show MARTHA.

Twain insisted on joining Stewart for a horseback chat because heading out on one of her eight steeds, stabled at her home in Switzerland, is one of her favourite past times.

She told Stewart, "I ride whenever I get the chance. It's a very inspiring thing for me to do - to get up and go out with nature in the back woods."

"My favourite thing to do is to leave home, walk for about an hour, fast and hard, to an ice-cream shop, and I reward myself with an ice-cream and I walk an hour back." Country star SHANIA TWAIN uses an incentive-based fitness regime.

March 14: Shania's mega-hit "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" was recently certified RIAA digital "gold" for 100,000 legal downloads in the USA. From her "Come On Over" album released in 1997, this track was not released as a CD single and not available as a paid digital download until just the past few years... Previously the digital single versions of Shania's smash "Forever and for Always" (from her "Up!" album) and recent hit "Party For Two" (from "Shania Twain: Greatest Hits") were certifed gold. Only selected earlier Shania singles were released in physical CD (or cassette) formats from "The Woman in Me" and early "Come On Over" era. All her physical singles were certified gold to platinum (500,000 - 1,000,000 units), though only released in limited quantities. "You're Still The One" was essentialy double platinum and would have sold triple, but her label allowed stock to deplete. Shania's singles sales must always be viewed in context of her albums sales, which is the primary goal, and why her singles have not been pushed. Serious concerns remain within the industry that singles sales hurt album sales, especially with the rise of paid digital downloads. Shania is the best selling artist on a "per album" basis, selling roughly between 20-40 million of her last three studio albums worldwide, without much promotion and with limited (to miserable, for "Up!") radio support, though she does take a long time between albums... while many acts (who are not songwriters), especially in country and mainstream pop, often put out a shorter album of lesser quality (and sometimes two albums) every year.

January 5, 2006: Through the end of 2005, Shania's "Come On Over" remains the top-selling album of the SoundScan era, 1991-2006, with 15,355,018 units sold. Overall sales include another 4.5M-5M from record clubs, the album is still certified at "double-diamond" (20X platinum, 20 million units sold), and is the top selling female album of all time. This Shania classic fluctuates between the #6-7 best selling album of all time, only behind those released 20-30 years earlier (two of which are double albums). Most of the early top album sales were only "estimated" pre-SoundScan. "Come On Over" has surpassed 39 million in worldwide sales. Shania's total worldwide albums sales exceed 85 million.

December 7: "Shania Twain: Greatest Hits" was one of the final four nominees for "Country Album of the Year" at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards last night. Shania did win this award since she sold the most copies of her album in the eligibility period, according to SoundScan (roughly 2,740,000 units). Billboard's 'chart year' did not include Shania's record-breaking debut week sales for her "Hits" album... The Billboard chart year differs from the calendar year, running from chart week November 21, 2004 (BB issue December 4, 2004) through November 13, 2005 (BB issue November 26, 2005). The winner was not "officially" announced on the show, and Billboard has not yet revealed this and some other categories, but those remaining results and rankings will be published in their Year In Music 2005 issue, due on newsstands later this month.

December 1: At this year's BMI Europe Awards held November 29 in London, three of Shania's hit songs were among those honored. Shania received new "Million-Air" Awards for: "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" which passed 3 million plays; and "Forever And For Always," last year's Song of the Year, passed two million plays. "Forever And For Always" is also a two-time BMI Pop Award winner (2003 and 2004) and a 2004 Country Award winner. Shania's "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" also was honored as
