Come On Over

"Sometimes we would literally go two or three days at a time where we'd sit by the fire and start writing in the morning, go for a walk later in the afternoon, go for a horseback ride or eat, then write, go to bed really late, get up early in the morning and start all over again."

~Shania (on the writing process of Come On Over)

Come On Over
8-3-2000
Mercury/PolyGram

A couple weeks ago, I was offered the toll-free office number for Hard Copy, who were fishing around town for someone to provide expert analysis about Shania Twain. Did they want me to say something bad about her or something that was good? "We just want the truth," was the terse, albeit ethically tactful, response. Sorry, don't think I could help y'all with that one. Then I was asked if I could help direct them to anyone who could comment on The X-Files. C'mon, how talented does a show like Hard Copy think I really am?

Besides, I find mysteries like everything that enshrouds Shania much more interesting -- like how she and husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange perfected a formula that could serve more than Shania ever did working at a local McDonald's. Then again, I've lived in this backwater nation my entire life and I have never heard anyone utter the phrase "Gol darn and done it" -- not even on CBC Radio. Yet that's the hook on "Love Gets Me Every Time," Shania's new single, foreshadowing another record of sugar metal dressed up for line dancing.

A benign ballad duet like "From This Moment On" suggests hubby is coercing her to pull back on the sultriness -- except that this is Mutt Lange, who wouldn't have it any other way. So, after a few formulaic overtures, Shania dives straight into Heart terrain with "When," expressing her desire to have Elvis and John Lennon alive again. Heck, she wouldn't be afraid of the competition -- doubtful either one would record a song called "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!" And from that advice dispensation onward, the electric fiddles cease to sound grating and the token twang becomes a crucial ingredient.

Shania delivers deadpan asides in the tradition of Joe Elliot on "That Don't Impress Me Much," does a number about domestic abuse called "Black Eyes, Blue Tears" and purrs a line of French with perfect Jane Birkin precision on "I Won't Leave You Lonely." Not even "Rock This Country!" inspires a smidgen of cringing. Save for the three out of 16 tracks where the tempo slows to a coquettish crawl, Come On Over prevails as pure rock, aimed at a demographic that didn't know they needed it. But there's no better technique for escapism than injecting Def Leppard's antiquated boomin' system with female hormones. -- MARC WEISBLOT

March 14, 2006: Shania's mega-hit "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" was recently certified RIAA digital "gold" for 100,000 legal downloads in the USA. From her "Come On Over" album released in 1997, this track was not released as a CD single and not available as a paid digital download until just the past few years... Previously the digital single versions of Shania's smash "Forever and for Always" (from her "Up!" album) and recent hit "Party For Two" (from "Shania Twain: Greatest Hits") were certifed gold. Only selected earlier Shania singles were released in physical CD (or cassette) formats from "The Woman in Me" and early "Come On Over" era. All her physical singles were certified gold to platinum (500,000 - 1,000,000 units), though only released in limited quantities. "You're Still The One" was essentialy double platinum and would have sold triple, but her label allowed stock to deplete. Shania's singles sales must always be viewed in context of her albums sales, which is the primary goal, and why her singles have not been pushed. Serious concerns remain within the industry that singles sales hurt album sales, especially with the rise of paid digital downloads. Shania is the best selling artist on a "per album" basis, selling roughly between 20-40 million of her last three studio albums worldwide, without much promotion and with limited (to miserable, for "Up!") radio support, though she does take a long time between albums... while many acts (who are not songwriters), especially in country and mainstream pop, often put out a shorter album of lesser quality (and sometimes two albums) every year.

January 5, 2006: Through the end of 2005, Shania's "Come On Over" remains the top-selling album of the SoundScan era, 1991-2006, with 15,355,018 units sold. Overall sales include another 4.5M-5M from record clubs, the album is still certified at "double-diamond" (20X platinum, 20 million units sold), and is the top selling female album of all time. This Shania classic fluctuates between the #6-7 best selling album of all time, only behind those released 20-30 years earlier (two of which are double albums). Most of the early top album sales were only "estimated" pre-SoundScan. "Come On Over" has surpassed 39 million in worldwide sales. Shania's total worldwide albums sales exceed 85 million.

Come on Over is the third album by Shania Twain, released in 1997 (see 1997 in music). The album is the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist, and the fifth biggest selling album in music history, along with Garth Brooks's Double Live. It spawned no less than twelve singles.

The album was certified 20x platinum for sales of over 20 million albums in the United States.

Additional Information on Come On Over

  • "You're Still The One", "From This Moment On", "That Don't Impress Me Much", and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" all were remixed to sound less country and to appeal more to pop audiences in hopes of a mainstream crossover for Twain.
  • The remixes were so successful that an "International Version" of Come On Over was released in 1999; it contained pop remixes of 15 tracks, except for "Rock This Country!".
  • In the United States, male disk jockeys were able to obtain a customized copy of the song "That Don't Impress Me Much". The customized copy would replace the line "..okay, so you're Brad Pitt, that don't impress me much" with "..okay, so you're XXXX that don't impress me much" where XXXX is the disk jockey's name sung by Shania Twain. Often, radio stations played the customized and single versions in rotation. [citation needed]
  • The album itself has sold 36 million copies worldwide, the largest ever by a female solo artist, but despite this it wasn't able to top the Billboard 200, reaching a peak of #2. It did however top the charts for 11 weeks in the UK.
  • The album set a record for longest stay in the Top 20 of The Billboard 200, remaining in the Top 20 for 99 weeks (about 1 year and 10 months).[citation needed]

I FOUND THESE REMARKS OF SHANIA'S SINGLES RELEASED IN ASIA. IT STATES WHAT THE MUSIC WORLD THERE FEELS ABOUT HER AND HER MUSIC AND HOW IT DID.

You're Still The One

This smash hit did it all for Shania Internationally(especially in Asia), Reaching #1 almost

instantly, it still remains a hot favorite on request shows all over Asia.

When

This single was released only internationally. However, it didn't do to well somehow....

rare for a Shania song.

From This Moment On   #4

Another big hit for Shania internationally. Her Indian look in the video for the song added an extra special touch, especially for the Asians.

You've Got A Way        #17

Ballads are generally hot sellers in Asia and this one was no exception. The fact that Shania looked spectacular in the video didn't hurt either. Suddenly everyone wanted to watch Notting Hill.

Man! I Feel Like A Woman!                #4

This high energy song was a big favorite among the women. The video however didn't get too much airplay, though the song was on heavy rotation on the radio.

That Don't Impress Me Much                        #8

After You're Still The One this was Shania's biggest hit from this album in Asia. The video had the reworked song and was very popular with night clubs. The song title also found its way into several news captions, including one in the business section of an Indian paper. It read: 'That Don't Impress Me Much"----if Shania Twain were keeping tabs on the Indian

Stock Market, that's what she would have said."

Come On Over

This single was not released in Asia.

Rock This Country

This single also was not released in Asia.

"I find that the very things that I get criticized for, which is usually being different and just doing my own thing and just being original, is the very thing that's making me successful."

~Shania Twain

"I think Shania making the record she did (Come On Over) changed the acceptance of what country could be."

~Keith Urban (On Shania Twain's "Come On Over)"
