Parthenon Pictures

These are some pictures that I took at Nashville, Tennessee's replica of the Parthenon. It is fullsized, and Athena Parthenos is leafed with over 10,000 paper-thin sheets of pure gold. Just a random fact! She is 41 ft 10 inches tall, making her the largest indoor sculpture in the Western hemisphere. The Parthenon in Nashville was created for Tennessee's Centennial Celebration in 1897. The statue wasn't finsihed until 1996, or gold-leafed until 2001.

Athena holds Nike, the Goddess of Victory, in her hands. Nike may look small in this photo, but in fact she is 6 ft 4 and weighs 5 tonnes!

The snake represents the people of Athens. Athena is the patron goddess of Athens.

The metopes on this side of the building show the mythical battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. The battle started when the Lapiths invited the Centuars over for a dinner party, and the Centaurs tried to kidnap all of the Lapith women.

This Pediment shows the moment after Athena sprung out of her father's head. Nike leaps to crown Athena with laurels.

I took this picture while lying on my back, gazing up at the ceiling. My, what colorful tiles!

This is a view down a row of columns. Note how they curve slightly outwards.

This is a floor plan of the Parthenon, with the rooms labeled. The naos housed the cult statue, the pronaos surrounded it, and the opisthodomos was used as a treasury.

This a picture of Athena's Shield. The head on it is the head of a Gorgon, made to petrify (literally!) Athena's enemies.

This is a picture of the West End, where the Athenians would have entered the temple. The people on the steps are my classmates.
