The Waka Analogy – used to develop and deliver our training programmes

We have identified seven core areas that are critical to the success or otherwise of an organisation.

Using a waka as an analogy they are:

Core Governance and

Management Areas

The Waka Analogy

Kaupapa – vision, mission and values

The hull that holds the whole waka together and keeps it afloat in calm and turbulent seas.

People – Leadership, Governance, Management and Staff

Reflecting the need to have the right people in the right places on the waka given the different roles and the importance of team work.

Structure

The need to have the right type of waka to suit the purpose e.g. waka ama or waka taua.

Policies and Systems

The rituals, protocols and rules for the waka to ensure a successful launch, and journey e.g. the careful selection and placement of the waka crew; the karakia and chants required; the different hoe (tools) for different purposes; the rules for communication.

Planning

The preparation before launching the waka and while on the water.

Monitoring

Keeping an eye on how the waka is moving; if it is heading in the right direction; if there are any perils on the horizon; how the crew are feeling.

Communication

How we listen, relay information and communicate with people on and off  the waka.

The following Training Programmes have been developed and are delivered using the above waka analogy.
