The tactic takes benefit of a hole in web search scripts that are used by some company websites and Search Engines. SEO Gurus can force other web sites to link to them if they use the right code in a link to the search feature of the other website:
A webmaster links straight to a search request page on a highly regarded web site.
The link code contains information that causes the search script on the reputable website to include a link to the website of the webmaster.
When Search Engine bots (including Google's bot) index the linked search results page, they find a link from an authority website to the webmaster's site.
As a high authority web site links to the website of the webmaster, his website gets higher rankings on Google.

Allows webmasters to easily add a link that points to the domain www.xyz.com with the keyword phrase or selected keyword for SEO purposes. This works for some web sites that use search/bymodelnumber? (Parameters) in the link for search queries.
In addition, the link also adds a < H1 > tag with the significant keyword on the page and it also adds the keyword to the title.

I strongly recommend NOT use this tactic. You might get short term results with this tactic if you find enough web sites that can be exploited that way.
Though, Search Engines don't like to be tricked. As soon as Search Engines find out that you tried to trick them, it is very likely that your website will be banned from the index.
Are there safe methods to get high Google Page Rankings?
If you want to get long-term results with your website, you should use ethical Search Engine optimization methods. Ethical Search Engine optimization gets additional time but the results also last much longer.
Instead of trying to deception Search Engines, focus on building the content of your website. Make sure that your web site is optimized for high SE rankings and that related web sites link to your website.
