Google Page Rank: The Short Elucidation

Your web page PR is resolute by only 3 factors:

1. The quantity of pages linking to your page.
2. The Page Rank of the web pages linking to your web page.
3. The total quantity of outgoing links from the pages linking to your web page.

You gain the good PageRank boost from pages that

a) Themselves have high Page Rank and

b) Link to only a few other websites. Yet incoming links from pages of low Page Rank with many outbound links will increase your pages PR, as long as you don't link back to them.

The deception part in the equation comes into play when you begin exchanging links. Because your link to their website affects their PR and their link to your website affects your PR. Obsessions become further complicated.

If you are concerned regarding PR, the general rule of thumb is always to swap links with websites of equivalent or higher PageRank.

It is significant to remember, PR isn't everything. There are lots of other causes to exchange links with other websites. For example, when you think it is a good website. PageRank is only a very small factor in Googles overall search engine ranking equation.

PR Calculation

Page Rank of Your Web Page = .15 + .85(PR (A1)/C (A1) + PR (A2)/C (A2) + ... + PR (An)/C (An))

Where:

‘A1’ through ‘An’ are pages providing incoming links to Your Page
PR (An) is the PageRank of ‘An’
C(An) is total number of outgoing links on ‘An’

PR(PageRank) Of Google ToolBar:

It is significant to note that the true Page Rank as determined by above method is not the same as the Page Rank displayed by the ‘Google Toolbar’. Right PageRank can range from .15 to more than a few million. Everybody knows that Google Toolbar displays a PR from 0 to 10.Therefore; each number in the Toolbar PageRank actually symbolizes a range of True PageRank values.

It is easy to gain or loose PR at the inferior numbers on the Toolbar. Though, to go from a Toolbar PR of 9 to a Toolbar PR of 10 is very difficult. As an approximation, it would take somewhat over 9 million dedicated PR 1 back links to raise a pages PR from a low 9 to a low 10.

The above is an approximation only based on the supposition that the highest true PageRank now existing for any page on the World Wide Web is almost 49 million. These values in fact change every time a new web page is added to the Internet. Every time Google index the web, the PageRank of every page is recalculated so that the average PR of all web pages on the Internet is equivalent to one. Consequently, the true values of the above chart are constantly in fluctuation.

A Simple Example PR Calculation:

Let’s assume that your web page has 4 pages linking to it as follows:

    • Web Page a: True Page Rank 110, Total Outgoing Links 5
    • Web Page b: True Page Rank 1000, Total Outgoing Links 45
    • Web Page c: True Page Rank 2000, Total Outgoing Links 100
    • Web Page d: True Page Rank 100, Total Outgoing Links 1

    Here is how the formula looks when we plug in the numbers:

    Page Rank of Your web Page = .15 + .85 (PR(A1)/C(A1) + PR(A2)/C(A2) + ... + PR(An)/C(An))
    Page Rank of Your web Page = .15 + .85 (110/5 + 1000/45 + 2000/100 + 100/1)
    Page Rank of Your web Page = .15 + .85 (22 + 22.22 + 20 + 100)
    Estimated Toolbar Rank = 2

    Web page with the lowest True PR has actually increased your PR. Because you were its only outgoing link, Google has allotted your web page the full vote from this website. At the other hand, the page with the highest True PR increased your web sites PR the least because he has increase his voting power over 100 outgoing links.

    Let’s see what happens to the numbers if we replace Page 3 with another page of True PR 2000 but only 3 outgoing links:

    PR of Your web Page = .15 + .85 (110/5 + 1000/45 + 2000/3 + 100/1)
    PR of Your web Page = .15 + .85 (22 + 22.22 + 666.66 + 100)
    PR of Your web Page = 689.39
    Estimated Toolbar Rank = 4

    clearly, it is nice to attract links from high PR web sites, but it's even superior if you can be one of their only outgoing links.
