North girls begin stretch run with OCC-Ohio title

Finally, the focus all season for the Pickerington Central and Pickerington North high school boys and girls swimming and diving teams is nearly here.

The OCC-Ohio Division meet was last Saturday, and the Division I sectional is Feb. 14.

"Throughout the course of the season, our focus has been on the championship season," North coach Eric McFerin said. "Everything has been geared toward this stretch."

Central coach Nicole Holicki said her team has exceeded expectations.

"We demand a lot from them and they always give us more than 100 percent," Holicki said. "They are constantly pushing themselves in the water and asking how they can better themselves."

The North girls won the OCC-Ohio and the boys were second.

McFerin said any success the Panthers earn in the postseason can be traced to what they did during the Christmas break, practicing from 6:30-9:30 a.m. and having afternoon dry-land sessions.

"I was very surprised with the work ethic over the holiday break," McFerin said. "From the beginning of the season, the swimmers have the mindset to swim fast at the end of the year, but swimming fast within the dual meets is very important.

"Reviewing last year's times, there are several swimmers who are right around or faster than their shave and rested times from the championship meets."

McFerin noted the efforts of senior Logan Bauer, juniors Rachael Vacek and Sarah Lawler and sophomores Morgan Grodesky, Logan Griffith and Jessica Kaiser, all returning district qualifiers. He said he expects "great swims deep into the championship season" from sophomore Katey Fisher and freshman Janel Mathews.

"I think we've done really well so far," Bauer said. "I think we will have a great end of the season coming up."

For the North boys, McFerin said seniors Charlie Combs, Evan Dort, Ian Dort, Shawn Neal and Kevin Solon have led the way. Junior Billy Ross and freshman Paul Hintz are ones to watch in the postseason.

"All the swimmers on the boys side have made significant drops in their swims," McFerin said.

"Everybody's definitely been dropping a lot of times," Combs said.

McFerin also complimented the leadership of the seniors Bauer, Nina Kossoff and Blair Horseman.

"Being a first-year coach at the school, they have (been) instrumental for the success of the team," he said.

 Swimmers put on strong show

The North girls brought home a league championship at the OCC Ohio meet Jan. 31 at the Lancaster YMCA, scoring 312 points to outdistance Lancaster (264), Gahanna (257) and Pickerington Central (156).

Meanwhile the boys were scoring 266 points, to finish behind league champion Gahanna (344) and far ahead of Grove City (189).

Winning individual girls league titles were Logan Bauer (50-yard freestyle and 100 free), Katey Fisher (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) and Janel Matthews (100 breaststroke). The Panthers also won the 200 medley relay.

Billy Ross took first place for North in the boys meet in back and breast.

The teams travel to Delaware Hayes Friday, Feb. 6, for a 6 p.m. meet in their final regular-season competition. Sectional events start Feb. 14.

Junior Billy Ross of the Pickerington High School North boys swimming team qualified for last year's state meet. This year, he is looking for an encore and then some.

As a sophomore, Ross was 12th at state in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.8 seconds). This season, he not only wants to place in the top eight in the 100 breast, he also wants to advance in the 200 individual medley.

"It's gone pretty well," Ross said of this season. "It's looking pretty good right now." click to read entire article
