The colors and patterns of nature have always captured my attention with awe and reverence. | ![]() |
My interest in trying to capture the beauty of nature began when I was a teenager. I would spend time sitting on my back step in Cheshire, Massachusetts making pencil sketches of the things I loved, such as flowers, pets and trees. This is when the seed was planted in my mind to want to learn more about art.
Wherever my path took me over the years (raising a family, getting an education, advancing in my teaching career) the desire to furthur my art ambitions was not fulfilled due to the fulltime events of life.
In the middle of winter in 2003, I read in the paper about the art school of the Berkshires called IS183 in Housatonic Massachusetts. I enrolled in a watercolor course taught by Pat Hogan and have been immersed in watercolor techniques ever since.
What I like best about watercolor painting is the ability to make connections between my career and the world of art. Having background knowledge gained during my years as a science teacher hepls me better understand the chemistry behind the interaction of water, paint, and paper. Also, being a math and science teacher has taught me to see detail for better coordination of line, shape and space in the natural world.
I continue to learn as much as possible from area artists by taking classes and workshops with Pat Hogan of Great Barrington, Karin Cook of Peru, Mel Stabin's week long workshop, and the watercolor weekends at the Becket Art Center.
Because I want to expand my art media experiences, I have taken pastel classes at IS183 with June Parker for the past two years.
