THE HACKETT FAMILY

Jacob Hackett Sr.  Born, circa 1772, in NJ. Died, circa 1836, in Ontario, Canada. Occupation: Farmer.

Hackett (1949): "Jacob was a blacksmith and it is evident that they began their married life in the extreme northwest corner of the state of New Jersey. Elder members of the family whom I have known say that Jacob told he 'could throw his hammer into three states from the front of his shop.'

They left New Jersey in 1812. "The section in which the family settled was known as 'Upper Canada,' as the elevation was higher than that of Quebec. The county was then York (later Peal) and Chinquocoucy was the name of the township. This was about 20 miles southwest of Toronto; and 35 or 40 miles north of Hamilton...They built for themselves a large, double log house on the 160 acres of land which was the homestead of Jacob, Sr. It first housed the family of Jacob and Elizabeth; and also her parents, John and Elizabeth Moore. Samuel and Dency took over a part of the house after their marriage.

"[They]...had died between the years of 1834 and 1838. Jacob had left the homestead to his wife Elizabeth and to his second son John."

Jacob apparently made a will in which he left his lands to Samuel and John Hackett, but for the sole use of wife Elizabeth as long as she remain unmarried.

He married Elizabeth Moore, 1803. Children:

Farmer. He married, first, Eliza Wilson, 1835, in Canada. He

married, second, Dency Terry, after 1873.

3. Isaac Hackett. Born, 1808, in NJ. Died, circa 1808.

4. Elizabeth Hackett. Born, 1809, in NJ. Died in Ontario, Canada.

She married John Wilson in Canada.

5. Abraham Hackett. Born, 30 Sep 1811, in NJ. Died, 5 Oct 1885, in

Whitewater, Walworth Co., WI. Burial in Oak Grove Cem., Walworth

Co., WI. Census: 1850 in Whitewater, Walworth Co., WI.

Occupation: Farmer. He married Mary Randall.

6. Anna Hackett. Born, 5 Oct 1812, in Niagara Falls, NY. She

married John Parker, 5 Oct 1828, in Canada.

7. Hannah Hackett. Born, 1814, in Ontario, Canada. She married John McGee.

8. Rachel Hackett. Born, 1816, in Ontario, Canada. She married John Warren.
