(Keep repeating going faster each time)

Gory Songs:

Title: Chicken lips and Lizard hips (Tune- "Supercalifragilistic")

Lyrics: Oh, when I was a little kid I never liked to eat,  Mama's put things on my plate, I'd dump them on her feet, But then one day she made this soup, I ate it all in bed, I asked her what she put in it, and this is what she said:

Chorus: Oh, Chicken Lips and Lizard hips and alligator eyes, Monkey legs and Buzzard eggs and salamander thighs, Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toenail pies, Stir it all together it's mama's soup surprise.

 I went into the bathroom and stood beside the sink, I said i'm feeling slightly ill, I think I'd like a drink, Mama, said "I've got just the thing, I'll get it in a wink, it's full of lots of protein and vitamins, I think."

(Chorus)

Title: Feet (Tune- "My Bonnie")

Lyrics: Last night as I lay on my pillow, Last night as I lay on my bed, I stuck my feet out the window, Next morning my neighbors were dead. Next morning my neighbors were dead.

Bring back, bring back, Bring back my neighbors to me, to me. Bring back, bring back, oh bring back my neighbors to me.

Title: Gory, Gory (Tune - "Battle Hymn of the Republic")

Lyrics:
He jumped 40 thousand feet without a parachute.
He jumped 40 thousand feet without a parachute.
He jumped 40 thousand feet without a parachute.
But he ain't gonna jump no more.

CHORUS:
Gory, gory, what a heck of a way to die.
Gory, gory, what a heck of a way to die.
Gory, gory, what a heck of a way to die.
Well, he ain't gonna jump no more.

He landed on the target like a blob of strawberry jam...
We scraped him off the target with a bread and butter knife...
We put him in an envelope and sent him home to mum...
She put him on the mantelpiece for everyone to see...

CHORUS:

Title: Puff the Magic Maggot

(chorus)

Puff the Magic Maggot lives in my trash,

 and frolics in banana peels and in the cigarette ash.

Puff the Magic Maggot lives in my trash,

and dines on month old kitty litter and mildewed cornbeef hash.

(Verse 1)

Little Teddy Tapeworm loved that maggot, Puff,

He brought him dead dogs two weeks old and scabs still moist with pus.

Together they would travel to the city morgue to eat.

Puff would get the bones and hair and Teddy would get the meat.

Chorus

(Verse 2)

Maggots live for ever, but tapeworms aren’t so tough,

Teddy could eat the bones and hair, but he choked on the scabs with pus.

Puff was broken hearted, loosing Teddy really hurt,

But not as much as hunger did, so he ate him for desert.

Chorus

Title: Road Kill Stew  (Tune "Three Blind Mice")

Lyrics:
Road kill stew,
Road kill stew,
Tastes so good,
Just like it should.

First you go down to the interstate,
You wait for the critter to meet its fate,
You take it home and you make it great,
Road kill stew,  Road kill stew.

Title: TOM THE TOAD (Tune- "Oh Christmas Tree")

Lyrics:
Oh, Tom the Toad. Oh, Tom the Toad.
Why are you lying in the road?
You didn't see that car ahead,
And now you're lying truly dead.

Oh, Tom the Toad. Oh, Tom the Toad.
Why are you lying in the road?
You use to hop and jump about,
And now your guts are spilling out.

Oh, Tom the Toad. Oh, Tom the Toad.
Why are you lying in the road?
You didn't see that light turn red!
Now there's tracks across your head.

Oh, Tom the Toad, oh Tom the Toad,
Why did you jump into the road?
You were so big and green and fat,
But, now you're small and red and flat.

Oh, Tom the Toad, Oh Tom The Toad,
Why did you jump into the road?
You did not see that car ahead,
And you were flattened by the tread.

Oh, Tom the Toad, oh, Tom the Toad,
Why did you leap upon the road?
You thought you'd beat that bus across,
Now you look like a pile of moss.

Oh, Tom the Toad, oh Tom the Toad,
Why are you splattered on the road?

(Note: There are almost as many versions of this song as there are scouters!)

Holiday Songs:

Title: Trick or Treat (Tune- "Jinglebells")

Lyrics:
Trick or treat, trick or treat, Trick or treat we say!
Try to get the treats before The ghosts takes us away!

Trick or treat, trick or treat, Trick or treat we say!
If you don't have treats for us We'll never go away!

Dashing through the streets, Meeting goblins as we go,
Wearing contour sheets, Wishing it would snow.
Bells in doorways ring, Making spirits bright,
Ohh What fun it is to come and sing,
And get some food tonight.

Late last night when we were all in bed,
Mrs. O'Leary left her lantern in the shed.

All join 'round and sweetly you must sing.
And when the verse is through, in the chorus all join in:
"There'll be a hot time in the old town tonight!"

For dramatic effect, shout out "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE" at the end of the first verse.

Title: Taps (Sung with reverence)

Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, from the hills, from the sky; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight, And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days, 'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky; As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

Sun has set, shadows come, Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds; Always true to the promise that they made. (Scouts added these last two lines)

While the light fades from sight, And the stars gleaming rays softly send, To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

The Story of Taps
    Taps was devised during the Civil War. In 1862, the Union Army of the Potomac, under Major General George McClellan, was transported to the Virginia Peninsula to launch a campaign against the Confederate capital at Richmond. The Army met stiff resistance at the outskirts of Richmond. After a series of battles, McClellan, a cautious general by nature, and misinformed as to the strength of the Confederate army confronting him, elected to "change bases" - a carefully worded synonym for retreat - to a site to the south, on the bank of the James River.
    During this retreat, the Army of the Potomac was forced to stand and fight the pursuing Confederate army at Malvern Hill. The Confederate army, rather unwisely, charged the Union line and was defeated. The battle of Malvern Hill was fought on June 28 - July 1, 1862.
    On July 2, in a miserable rain, the Army of the Potomac completed its depressing and embarrassing retreat to Harrison's Landing on the James River. The retreat was a grim disillusionment for the North, which had expected a short war. For the Army of the Potomac, it was its darkest and sadist hour.
    Encamped at Harrison's Landing that summer was Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield. He was the commander of the 3rd brigade of the 1st division of the Army of the Potomac's 5th corps. A fairly undistinguished officer otherwise, General Butterfield had an ear for music. Previously, he had observed that his brigade's bugle call caused confusion in camp, because it could not be distinguished from that of other brigades. So he devised a unique bugle call for the 3rd brigade.
    Now, in camp along the James, he noted that the regulation evening bugle call for lights out was neither musical nor inspirational, nor tranquilizing. He devised a alternative tune for his bugler, which, after a couple of attempts, became Taps. The tune became popular, and soon the entire Army of the Potomac was using the call in place of the regulation call for lights out.
    Eventually, Taps was adopted by all Union armies, and became official army regulation. Taps remains regulation to this day.

Another Story of Taps:

    We have all heard the haunting melody of "Taps." It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes. But do you know one of the stories behind the song? If not, I think you will be pleased to find out about its proposed humble beginnings.
    Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing, Virginia.
    The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellisombe heard the moan of a soldier who was severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention.
    Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward the encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission to give his son a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.
    The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was denied since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him one musician. The Captain chose a bugler.
    He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted.
    The haunting melody, which we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals, was born.

Title: THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Oh! say can you see, By the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen Thru' the mist of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host In dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, O'er the tower steep, As it fitfully blows, Half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band Who so dauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, When free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation, Blest with vict'ry and peace, May the Heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, For our cause it is just, And this be our motto-- "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Repeat Songs:

Title: The Bear Song (tune: sippin si)

Lyrics: (Leader with Group, echoing)

The other day (The other day)
I saw a bear (I saw a bear)

I see you ain't, Got any gun

I said to him, That's a good idea!
So come on feet, Let's get out of here.

And so I ran, Away from there.
But right behind, Me was that bear.

But ahead of me, There was a tree.
A great big tree,Oh, Glory Be!

But the lowest branch, Was ten feet up.

I'd have to trust, My luck to jump.

And so I jumped, Into the air.
But I missed that branch, A way up there.

Now don't you fret, Now don't you frown.
'Cause I caught that branch, On the way back down.

That's all there is, There ain't no more.
Unless I meet, That bear once more.

Oh just let me lie, 'neath the starry night sky with the hoot owls and the raccoons at play. And at dawn let me soak,  up the smell of wood smoke 'tis the stuff of which mem'ries are made!

Title: Scout Vespers (Tune- Oh Christmas Tree)

Lyrics: Softly falls the light of day, As our campfire fades away, Silently each scout should ask, Have I done my daily task. Have I kept my honor bright, Can I guiltless sleep tonight, Have I done, and have I dared, Everything to be prepared.

Listen Lord, oh listen Lord, As I whisper soft and low. Bless my mom and Bless my dad, These are things that they should know. I will keep my honor Bright, The oath and law will be my guide. And mom and dad this you should know, Deep in my heart I love you so.

(Repeats as many times as you wish)

Songs for Cubs

Title: Camper's Lament (Tune: "Battle Hymn Of The Republic")

Lyrics:
The first rain drop began to fall as I arrived at camp.
Then followed many million more as it began to pour!
My father said, "Don't worry son; it won't be lasting long."
When will I see the sun?

Chorus:
Pouring, popuring, not a single speck of light.
Pouring, pouring, thru the day and thru the night.
Pouring, pouring, wish my boots were water tight.
When will I see the sun?

First my socks, and then my pants were wringing, sopping wet.
My sleeping bag's a water bed, a drenched cap on my head.
The tent I slept in floated 'way; my food's a dripping goo.
When will I see the sun?

Chorus:

Today's the day I'm leaving camp, and LO! what do I see?
A ray of sun a-streaming thru a patch so bright and blue!
The clouds are parting; dove's returning with an olive branch;
I finally saw the sun!

Chorus: (Change last line to: I finally saw the sun!)

Title: Camper's Worst Fears (Tune: "A Few Of My Favorite Things")

Lyrics:
Rain drops on Cub scouts and wet smelly gym socks.
Tents dark and crowed and sleeping on sharp rocks.
Small biting insects that fly in my ears;
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
Building a fire with wet wood and matches.
Lighting the kindling that never quite catches.
Tryin' to endurethe sarcasm and jeers,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.

Chorus:
When the food stinks, and my back kinks,
And my patience has run dry,
I simple remember my snug bed at home
And, then I begin....to cry!

Running to catch up, I fall down the hillside.
Piles of wet laundry that smells liuke a skunk died.
Listenin' to night sounds that no-one else hears,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.
Pond scum and algae in my swimming hole.
Hot tempers flaring and fights with my best pal.
Blisters and rashes for me and my peers,
These are a few of a camper's worst fears.

Chorus

Title: Can't Tie This Knot (Tune: "Reveille")

Lyrics:
I can't tie this knot; I can't tie this knot;
I can't tie this knot they showed me.
I can't tie this knot; I can't tie this knot;
I can't tie this knot at all.
My Leader's patience's waning;
My Den Chief's color's draining,
I can't tie this knot; I can't tie this knot;
I can't tie this knot at all.

I don't know this leaf; I don't know this leaf;
I don't know this leaf they showed me.
I don't know this leaf; I don't know this leaf;
I don't know this leaf at all.
I can't grasp botany's jive-ey,
Hope it's not poison ivy.
I don't know this leaf; I don't know this leaf;
I don't know this leaf at all.

I can't cross this creek; I can't cross this creek;
I can't cross this creek in front of me.
I can't cross this creek; I can't cross this creek;
I can't cross this creek at all.
My Den Chief's way too bossy;
Those stones look wet and mossy,
I can't cross this creek; I can't cross this creek;
I can't cross this creek at all.

What goes where and who does what?
Is he talkin' pigeon English?
Sure, I understand him...NOT!

What's this game he wants to play?
Do these rules make any sense?
Does he really 'spect us to sing?

Can't wait to see him again next week!
