The Story

MGS 3 SNAKE EATER-Platforms:PS2

1960's...After WW2, the world was divided into the East and the West which caused...The Cold War.

1962...The President of the U.S. receives information that the Soviet Union had deployed nuclear weapons in Cuba. This only showed the world this might be the Nuclear Armageddon. After negotiations, the Soviet Union agreed to withdraw their weapons from Cuba. Little did we know, there was a secret condition in the deal that put an end to all this. A man named Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov, a Russian scientist who defected to the West, was sent back to the Soviet Union. Sokolov was going to be the designer of a frightening and deadly weapon. With Sokolov back in the Soviet Union, the Russians now can resume it's development.

1964...Realizing the urgency of the situation, the CIA forms a plan to recapture Sokolov. They dispatch the FOX Unit to Sokolov's facility, South of the Soviet fortress of Groznyj Grad. Led by former SAS member Major Zero, FOX is a next-generation special forces unit that will operate as specialized combat group and as a covert intelligence outfit. The FOX unit sends a single agent into enemy territory to carry out solo sneaking missions backed by radio support. One man is sent on a mission call the Virtuous Mission. But only later failing the mission he is sent back out on Operation Snake Eater to take down a weapon of mass destruction, a nuclear device called the Shagohod. The man's code name is...Naked Snake.

METAL GEAR SOLID PORTABLE OPS-Platforms:PSP

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is a new portable gaming experience for your Playstation Portable. You can play online, create your own squadron, play with many characters and play your own sing mission. The story fills the gap the saga left behind, taking place between Operation Snake Eater and the Outer Heaven incident, between Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear. It takes place in 1970, six years after Big Boss's Snake Eater mission. I wonder if any hippies will be fighting in this game! Just kidding, John Travolta will not only be dancing but also killing! This story starts a series of events including Big Boss's mission to destroy the FOX unit resulting in the formation of Fox-Hound, Big Boss going against his own son, Big Boss betraying his country and creating Outer Heaven. You guys wanted a damn good MGS game on the PSP, you got it!

Story

The trailer from E3 kicks off with our newly renowned, Big Boss waking up in a prison. After talking to Para-Medic, he finds out that the Major was taken by the military under suspicion of treason. If you don't know, Big Boss left the FOX unit around this time. There is now talk of a revolt taking place in South America that was started by the recently disbanded Fox unit. While talking to Para-Medic, he also is informed that he is being charged for appointing the revolt. Big Boss now has to take out his old unit in order to prove his innocence. He has 2 objectives, the first is to disarm the Fox members who are organizing the resistance and the second is to destroy the new "ultimate weapon". Since it is impossible to go alone, Big Boss has to recruit people and start a squadron which results in the new unit, Fox-Hound. Some later characters might be making their appearance such as Frank Jaeger also known as Gray Fox and possible cameo that starred in the trailer, a ninja cloaked in black wielding a sword, this might be Black Color from Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. When Boss goes to destroy the new Metal Gear, he is too late. A new Shagohod inspired Metal Gear, situated on top of a Saturn V rocket, launches out of a missile silo. Will this be the beginning of the end for Big Boss?

Gameplay

The new Metal Gear Solid game has no card flipping strategies in sight. This new installment for the PSP carries some of the gameplay from the other Metal Gear games. The game does have a 3d camera just like Subsistence and it does have the first person viewer to help look or to fire your weapon. Big Boss is now rocking a new CQC battle suit that comes with a slicker design, a cooling system and a CQC enhancer, he's doing pretty good for himself! Along with the new outfit, the Close Quarters Combat is coming back into play just like when is was introduced in Snake Eater. The newest part of the gameplay is that you have to recruit people to make your own squadron to fight in battles. The people you recruit also can include characters from Snake Eater like the Major or Ocelot, anyone you want, yes you get to play as them too. Even the cutscenes will be very unique, Ashley Wood is going to do the art of the game just like the comic series. Don't forget you get to play online with all of your favorite characters, how awesome is that? On the online mode, you create custom squads along with friends but due to the new "white flag" system, when you die, you don't respawn unless you surrender to the enemy and join them. Hideo Kojima wanted this game to stand out from the others and he is definitely doing a good job on that.

Inside Games

Snake Vs. Monkey
Snake vs. Monkey is a mini-game included within Metal Gear Solid 3 which crosses over with Sony Computer Entertainment's Ape Escape series. The objective of the game is to capture all the monkeys within several stages (all set in areas from the main game) using a stun gun. When the player clears a stage, new equipment, such as the active sonar and stun grenades, will become available that makes capturing monkeys easier. The player is awarded with the Banana camo pattern and a monkey mask after clearing all stages and achieving top scores respectively.

Nightmare Game
Metal Gear Solid 3 contains a secret mini-game called the Nightmare Game aka Guy Savage (as stated in the credits). In this game, the player controls as a character who uses two large blades to slash his way through an army of zombie like monsters. The Nightmare Game is completely unrelated to the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 3, and bears no resemblance to MGS3 in controls, graphics, or gameplay. It is, however, very competent as a stand-alone game. It bears some resemblance to BloodRayne 2 in gameplay.

The Characters

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater (Soviet Union, The 60's)

Snake- A "John Doe" who goes by the nickname Jack. The operative from Special Forces Unit "Fox" assigned the codename Naked Snake during the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater. Taught by The Boss with tactics including combat, destruction, espionage, psychology, CQC, etc. He will soon achieve the name Big Boss.

Major Tom aka Major Zero- The Commander of Special Forces Group called "Fox". Major "Tom" was the officer in charge with leading both the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater. He helped Snake in the two missions giving moral support over the radio. Former member of the British SAS.

Para-Medic- A field surgeon and doctor assigned to provide scientific medical support on Virtuous Mission and Snake Eater to Snake via radio. She is working with Major Zero and Sigint helping Snake. Her real name still is not known.

Sigint aka Donald Anderson- He was part of the three person radio team tasked with providing Naked Snake with tactical assistance during the two missions. His knowledge was considered encyclopedic. He later joined a organization called ARPA in 1965 which was then called DARPA later on with Donald becoming the head of DARPA in the 90's.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson- Referred to as LBJ, was the thirty sixth President of the United States from 1963 to 1969. After serving a long career in the US Congress, Johnson became the Vice President under John F. Kennedy from 1961 from 1963 and later ascended to the presidency following Kennedy's assassination. He ordered the operation of Snake Eater and awarded Snake with the title, Big Boss.

Leader Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchof aka Krushchev- The leader of the Soviet Union after the death of Joseph Stalin. He was First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964 and Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1958 to 1964. He threatened President Johnson with nuclear war if they did not supply crucial evidence that the U.S. had nothing to do with the nuclear explosion that occurred at the end of the Virtuous Mission.

Nikolai Stephanovich Sokolov aka Sokolov- A weapons research scientist and attempted defector. Head of the secret OKB-754 Design Bureau. Developer and designer of the Shagohod. Developed numerous weapons with the funding by the Khruschev faction. He was the principal designer of the Russian Vostok rocket. He is later killed by Volgin by intense beatings.

Aleksandr Leonovitch Granin- Director of the Graniny Gorki Research and Design Lab, he is the initial developer and champion of Metal Gear. He then shares his research with an American colleague who turns out to be Otacon's father. He was actually had designs for Metal Gear Rex. Granin gives Snake information on the Philosopher's Legacy as well as provides access to Groznyj Grad. Granin has been award twice with the Order Of Lenin, which he wears on his suit jacket.

Eva aka Tatyana aka Tanya- A KGB spy working for Khrushchev and former NSA codebreaker. She rendezvoused with Snake instead of the missing operative Adam. It is later revealed she was not an agent for the KGB, but an agent for China to steal the Legacy and kill anyone she sees while attempting to do so.

The Boss aka The Joy- The Cobra Unit Commander, a living legend before being branded as a traitor, the Boss was considered the best soldier in the world. During WWII, she assembled the Cobra Unit and developed a style of combat known as CQC, or Close Quarters Combat making her a lethal opponent. She chose her greatest student, Snake to carry out the difficult task of being the one to stop her. She kept her motive hidden from everyone, even Snake. Former member of the British SAS.

Ocelot- Commander of the Ocelot Unit. Ocelot's motives were always unclear, as he seemed to work for countries that were opposed to one another. The child of the Boss and the Sorrow, and was seized from them by the Philosophers after birth. An expert of physics and ricocheting.

Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin aka Volgin- This physically imposing monster was a Russian Nationalist and Colonel in the GRU. Using Dr. Sokolov, Volgin was able to complete the Shagohod. Volgin wears a prototype of the exoskeleton that would later bring Gray Fox back to life. His body carries an electrical charge of ten million volts, earning him the nickname "Thunderbolt". He is also believed to be bisexual, as hinted with Major Raikov.

The Sorrow- Cobra Unit member. The Sorrow was a soldier that possessed the supernatural ability to communicate with the dead. With this ability he was able to communicate with the recently deceased to obtain critical information, a valuable tool if a victim died during interrogation. He uses the element of sorrow.

The Pain- Cobra Unit member. The Pain is a very tall man. He subjected his unexposed body to the stinging of thousands of bees, forever scarring his flesh but granting him the ability to control a swarm of the venomous stinging insects at will while using bee bullets and bee bombs. He uses the element of pain.

The Fear- Cobra Unit member. He has a serpent like tongue and what appeared to be the eyes of a lizard. The Fear possessed superhuman agility and the ability to contort his body at will. These traits allowed him to literally travel through trees like a monkey and runs with beast like speed while uses a poisonous crossbow as his weapon. He uses the element of fear.

The End- Cobra Unit member. This extremely old and comatose man with a pet parrot apparently makes it easy to overlook his skills in combat. The father of modern sniping, the End is the world's greatest sniper. He is able to sustain his body without food for extended periods of time, drawing on sunlight to provide the energy he needs like a plant. His ability to take down targets is because of his ability to talk to the forest to find his target's whereabouts.

The Fury- Cobra Unit member. The Fury is a man filled with rage. He is one of the first men to see the Earth from space. It is believed the isolation and the confinement within his equipment drove him to madness. The Fury wields a flamethrower and has a rocked pack strapped to his back allowing him to fly effortlessly through the air.

Johnny Sasaki- Johnny Sasaki's father from Metal Gear Solid. Also named Johnny, he guards Snake's cell, and can be heard to complain of his diarrhea. Johnny tells Snake that all first children born in his family is named Johnny.

Major Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov- Right hand man and lover of Colonel Volgin, and a parody of Raiden. Snake has to ambush him and steal his clothes in order to sneak into the west wing of Groznyj Grad. There are numerous references to Raiden, ranging from Raikov's appearance because his face is nearly identical to Raiden's, his patronymic means "Son of Raiden", and Ivan is the Russian equivalent to "Jack", and his effeminate nature and voice.

The Philosophers

Not much is known about the Philosophers. They are an organization formed by the most powerful individuals from the United States, the Soviet Union, and the People's Republic of China. It was revealed during a timeline at the end of the game that the U.S. branch separated from the Philosophers and changed their name to The Patriots, though the names "Patriots" and "La-li-lu-le-lo" are mentioned prior to the timeline.

The Philosophers' Legacy is a massive fund that was collected during World War II by various powerful and influential individuals in the United States, the USSR, and China collectively known as The Philosophers. The fund itself is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and all three branches of The Philosophers are trying to get it for themselves.

Facts

The Medal awarded to Snake in the oval office at the end of the game is the Distinguished Service Cross. The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of a Medal of Honor; while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Unites States; and/or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing/foreign force.

In late 2002, Hideo Kojima and other members of the staff planned to visit the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC for research purposes. They ended up canceling the trip because of the Beltway sniper attacks.

Volgin's chant when he first meets Snake ("Kuwabara, kuwabara") is an old chant believed to help ward off thunderstorms.

The character of "The End" (as well as the concept of The Boss being Naked Snake's mentor) was based on a scrapped member of Dead Cell from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty called Old Boy (sometimes referred as Oldman). Old Boy (according to the MGS2 gameplan) was a 100-year old former Nazi general who wielded a Panzerfaust as his weapon of choice and was also a mentor to several soldiers, including Big Boss himself. His character was written out of the Metal Gear Solid 2 script because they could not find a way to fit it into the story.

The character design of The Boss was based on actress Charlotte Rampling.

The character of Naked Snake in the game was designed after Sean Connery's portrayal of James Bond. This was done, since in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the character design of Big Boss himself was also originally modeled after the older Sean Connery. The date of the "Virtuous Mission", 24 August 1964, was Hideo Kojima's first birthday. It was originally 24 August 1963 (his exact birth date), but was moved up a year because he wanted the 22 November 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy to factor into the story.

The codename of the character "Major Tom" is a reference to the 1969 song "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, which is about an astronaut called Major Tom.

A Clearer View

Revolver Ocelot is the son of The Sorrow and The Boss.

Revolver Ocelot was supposedly a former member of the Patriots

Quotes

Naked Snake: Commencing operation Snake Eater.

The Boss: I raised you, and loved you, I've given you weapons, taught you techniques, endowed you with knowledge. There's nothing more for me to give you. All that's left for you to take is my life.

The Boss: My friends, let us fight together again.
The Fear: I have waited long for this day.
The Pain: We will fight with you once more.
The End: Welcome back, Boss.
The Boss: Now that all five of us are together, it's time we go to the depths of hell itself.
The Boss: It's raining blood. Is he crying?
(the Sorrow appears near her, then disappears from sight)

President Johnson: You are above even The Boss. I hereby award you the title of Big Boss.

The Fury: Mission Command. I'm coming home.

Ocelot: I don't approve of your methods!
Colonel Volgin: Yeah? Well, I don't need your approval! Besides, what are you going to do? Report me to the authorities?

The Boss: Snake, you were an atomic test subject, weren't you? On Bikini Atoll. That's part of the reason I was drawn to you. You and I are alike. We're both slowly being eaten away by the karma of others. We'll never have the chance to die peacefully of old age. We have no tomorrow.

Songs

Snake Eater

*whispered* Snake Eater

I give my life

For the day we see new light

I give my life

What a thrill With darkness and silence through the night

What a thrill I'm searching and I'll melt into you

We see new light

I give my life I give my life I give my life

Not for honor, but for you Snake Eater

In my time, there’ll be no one else

Crime, it’s the way I fly to you

I’ll still in a dream, Snake Eater!

I give my life Not for honor, but for you

Snake Eater In my time there’ll be no one else

Crime, it’s the way I fly to you

I’m still in a dream, Snake Eater!

I’m still in a dream, Snake Eater!

Don't Be Afraid

How can you say goodbye, my love?

When we haven’t even said hello

I see your face I feel your sadness

I feel your pain inside of me

Why are you so afraid?

How can you go on living in the past?

I see your eyes I feel your pain

I feel your sadness inside of me

Open your heart and smile for me

You’re not the only one afraid to fall in love

Dance with me again

And walk this way Don’t be afraid to love again

Why can’t we start all over?

How long can we go on, feeling this loss of love?

Why are you so afraid to feel the pain of love?

Why are you so afraid to feel the joy of love?

I see your face I see your sadness

I feel the pain inside of you

Why are you so afraid to start?

Don’t be afraid of killing me with pain of love!

Don’t! Don’t be afraid to fall in love again

Don’t be afraid to fall I’m falling

I’m falling in love again Falling in love again

How can you say goodbye?

When we haven’t even had a chance to say

I love you Yes I do

Don’t! Don’t be afraid Don’t be afraid to love again

Way To Fall

Son You’ve got a way to fall

They’ll tell you where to go

But they won’t know

Son You’d better take it all

They’ll tell you what they know

But they won’t show

Oh I’ve got something in my throat

I need to be alone

While I suffer

Son You’ve got a way to kill

They’re picking on you still

But they don’t know

Son You’d better wait to shine

They’ll tell you what is yours

But they’ll take mine

Oh I’ve got something in my throat

I need to be alone While I suffer

Oh There’s a hole inside my boat

And I need to stay afloat

For the summer long

Oh I’ve got something in my throat

I need to be alone While I suffer

Oh There’s a hole inside my boat

And I need to stay afloat

For the summer

Son You’ve got to wait to fall

They’ll tell you where to go But they won’t know
