The Story

VR/SPECIAL MISSIONS/INTEGRAL-Platforms:PS1

It contains approximately 300 extra VR training missions. Each task is fairly brief, normally taking no more than a minute or two to complete. As you complete a greater number of missions, extra ones are opened up, with a percentage on the menu screen indicating how much of the game you have beat. You begin with only weapons and sneaking missions available, both being much along the same lines of the VR training mode of the original Metal Gear Solid. The weapons mode is split into five different tests for each of the eight weapons which are available in the full game. Sneaking is divided into two parts- with and without a weapon and sees you having to evade an ever more complex array of guards, cameras, infrared beams and other security devices. Complete each section once and then you'll have to run through them all again under time attack conditions.

Sneaking Mode- 60 missions. Reach the goal without being seen by the enemy. Player can choose to between "No Weapon" and socom mode. In socom mode, the player must eliminate all enemies in order to unlock the goal.

Weapon Mode- 80 missions. Destroy all targets with the assigned weapon. There are several type of targets in this mode that behave differently. The red colored targets will detonate sympathetically.

Advance Mode- 80 missions. Defeat all enemies with the assigned weapon. Unlike sneaking mode, the mission will continue when the player is discovered.

Special Mode- 80 missions. A variety of missions which don't fit the above categories such as murder mysteries, puzzles, a time trial mission that spans several levels, ufo encounters, fighting Genola (a giant genome soldier) and missions where the user plays as the Cyborg Ninja.

Movies- Pre release trailers of the original Metal Gear Solid. Includes the two trailers presented at the Tokyo Game Show 1998 convention and the initial trailer from E3 1997.

Photoshoot Mode- Photographing sessions with polygonal models of Mei Ling and Naomi, two supporting female characters from the original game. Unlike the models used in the original game, the ones featured in the photoshoot mode have a high polygon count and are capable of more elaborate animation and movement, as well as actual facial expressions. Observant players will note the similarity of the photoshoot levels to the layout of Arsenal Gear's rectum, down to the hexagons present under Snake's feet when he moves.

Confidential Data- When the player completes their 300th mission, a picture of Metal Gear Ray is shown with the word "Confidential". This predates the first public showing of Metal Gear Solid 2 by a year.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2 SUBSTANCE-Platforms:PS2, Xbox, PC
The largest addition to gameplay are the over 200 challenging VR missions split between four specific modes- sneaking mode, weapon mode, first person view mode, and variety mode. In addition to VR missions, alternative missions have also been included allowing players to test their skills in bomb disposal mode, photograph mode, hold up mode, and elimination mode. Play as Solid Snake in the new Snake Tales missions, which incorporate everyone's favorite Metal Gear Solid character into five new action-packed stories.

Playable Characters

Raiden- Raiden, as he appears in the Plant chapter of the game.

Raiden (Ninja)- Raiden dressed in the exoskeleton used by the Cyborg Ninja. His only weapon is the high frequency blade.

X Raiden- Raiden, naked and with no weapon to use. Since he cannot use weapons, all his missions are sneaking mode.

Snake- Snake, as he appears in the Tanker chapter of the main game.

Pliskin- Snake in his Iroquois Pliskin guise from the Plant chapter.

Snake (Tuxedo)- Snake in a tuxedo outfit.

Snake (MGS1)- Snake in his outfit from the previous game. Has his radar turned off for most of his missions.

VR Missions

Sneaking Mode- Proceed to the goal without being discovered. Player can choose between no weapon or eliminate all (in which the goal appears after neutralizing the enemy) modes.

Weapon Mode- Destroy all targets with the chosen weapon. Extra points are awarded based on the player's accuracy.

First Person View Mode- A set of missions played from a first person perspective, each with a different objective.

Variety Mode- Miscellaneous missions with various objectives, including a night mission, a sniper mission and a Zako Survival mission in which the player must fight against regular enemy soldiers from the game.

Alternative Missions

Bomb Disposal Mode- Find the bombs in the given area under the time limit and use the coolant to freeze them.

Elimination Mode- Neutralize all enemy soldiers to unlock the goal.

Hold Up Mode- Put all the enemies in a hold up to unlock the goal. It will end if the player is discovered or if an enemy is killed.

Photograph Mode- Take specific photographs of objects or people under the time limit. Points are awarded on the picture.

Snake Tales

The Snake Tales are a series of non-canonical stories set in the main game's environments (primarily in the Big Shell), where the player control Solid Snake wearing one of various alternate costumes. Due to the low production values of these missions, no voiceovers are featured. Instead, the storyline is narrated through on-screen text during key parts of each mission. There are five Snake Tales in all (A Wrongdoing, Big Shell Evil, Confidential Legacy, Dead Man's Whispers and External Gazer).

MGS 3 SUBSISTENCE-Platforms:PS2/Online

Kojima Productions released a similar update for MGS3, subtitled Subsistence. With the addition of an online mode, new camera angles, and lots of other fantastic extras, this one sounds like a dream come true for fans of the series. The additions start small but sound big. The additional face paints that only ended up in the European release of Metal Gear Solid 3 will be included. You'll find additional missions in Snake vs. Monkey mode. Duel mode will let you get your boss fights on in short order. Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence will also have an all new, optional behind the back camera perspective. This will let you play the entire game from a more traditional third person angle, which should make the whole adventure feel pretty different. Subsistence will have an online mode that supports up to six players. The idea behind it is that it will still play roughly like the single player game, but you'll be working in teams of three as you attempt to take out the opposing side in team battle mode. You can also play Snake vs. enemies, a one against five configuration, if you're feeling especially stealthy. The game will have a good collection of extras that includes the very first Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, both originally released on the MSX home computer but never released in the U.S. A theater mode will let you watch all of the parody style game trailers that Kojima and the team at KCEJ released during the game's development.

Subsistence will also contain an online game comprised of five game modes, each with a capacity of at least 8 players, set in the main game's maps, as well as new stages made specifically for online play. The player can choose to join one of the three enemy units appearing in the main game- the KGB, the GRU or the Ocelot unit. The best ranking player in each team will control the team's leader, represented by a major character from the main game. Players can choose to be Snake (for the KGB), Raikov (for the GRU) and for the first time in the series.

Sneaking Mission- One player will play as Snake trying to procure an item from the other players, who will try to thwart his attempt.

Team Death Match- Two teams must engage in combat based on a set time limit and the team with the most "life tickets" remaining will be declared the victor.

Death Match- A free for all in which the objective is to get the most kills.

Capture Mission- Two competing teams of players attempt to capture an item and bring it back to their base.

Rescue Mission- One team guards an object while the other team tries to capture it. Rescue mission is unique in that players do not respawn if killed, instead they become ghosts.

Renewed Games- Inclusion of the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, based on their 2004 mobile phone releases.

Secret Theater- Secret Theater parody scenes from the official Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater website.

Face Paint- New facepaints and camo portraying the flags of numerous countries.

Third Person View- A new low angle third person camera that can be toggled in the game.

Online Mode- An online game comprised of five game modes with multiple players in the game's maps with different playable characters.

Review Of Subsistence

Subsistence Review

The fulfillment of Subsistence.
Subsistence. Persistence. Existence.
The ultimate Metal Gear Experience.

I cannot be more happy to have a chance to play the latest installment of the remixed series, Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence. This is Hideo Kojima at his best. The package you choose to receive comes along with 3 discs.

The first, Subsistence, you can play the entire Snake Eater game along with the new third person viewer which is very helpful now. You can play the game start to finish, all the same. Along with the first disc, is the demo theater, cutscenes from Snake Eater but with options to change them around to your own taste.

The second disc, Persistence, gives you the latest and greatest edition of playing online. The online specs are amazing. There are thousands of players online right now while playing many customized games to choose from. Also on the second disc, you can play the original but adapted versions ported from the MSX2 computer, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake video games. They did an excellent job porting these games and I had hours and hours of fun playing them. Finally, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is now playable in the United States. Another part on the second disc is the familiar mini game, Snake Vs Monkey. It is still as frustrating but still just as fun. What's not to like, you get to stun and capture those annoying, mocking monkeys from Ape Escape. Just like Substance, you have duel mode which allows you to fight enemies from the game without actually playing the entire game. The last part is the highly humorous, secret theater which includes very funny cutscenes that were made secretly, hence secret theater. On the secret theater mode, you can check out the parody, Metal Gear Raiden Snake Eraser which made it's appearance at the Tokyo Game Show this year.

Finally, the last disc, Existence, features all the cutscenes throughout Snake Eater but in a movie form. You can watch all the cutscenes that probably run about 3 hours. I started watching it and it was pretty cool as if it were a movie. The good part is, if you missed anything or misunderstood any part of the game or dialogue, just go back and check it. Of course, the latest installment of the Metal Gear Solid series has to come with a feature of the next installment which is Metal Gear Solid 4. You can watch the 9 minute trailer without worrying about buffering times or low visual quality.

My "colleagues" had to peel me away from the television screen! The blood shot eyes, the pounding headache, it was all worth it! I bought the game, came home, and the first thing I did, I hooked up my network adapter, popped Persistence in and got online. The best feature is the online multiplayer. It is the best online experience I've had in a long time. I played 5 hours straight on the night I bought it and didn't even budge from my seat. It is very addicting and very fun. I'm telling you, if you don't have it, get out there and buy it! It only costs $40 ($14 under the average game price) and the version without Existence is only $30. Spend that hard earned money on this fantastic game. Not to mention, you also receive a Metal Gear Acid 2 artwork lithograph of the Metal Gear prototype, PUB. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this package. Get it, get out there and get it!

The Characters

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance

Raiden- He has to be the easiest character to play as, regular VR missions.

Ninja Raiden- This is obviously Raiden in a "ninja" exoskeleton. He is a little bit tougher to play as, pretty much the same VR missions, but for weapon mode, you get to use the HF Blade, sweet!

Raiden X- A naked Raiden! He is not that tough to play as, moderate difficulty. All you have to do is a "streaking" mission where you skim through 5 levels undetected quickly.

Solid Snake- Snake is so, so. Pretty much a noraml difficulty, not that tough to play as, regular VR missions.

Pliskin- He is tougher than Snake, nothing that different, harder difficulty.

Tuxedo Snake- Snake with a snazzy tux is tougher than Pliskin, a harder difficulty.

MGS1 Snake- The toughest character to play in VR, period. The reason being, the difficulty level is under European Exteme Mode.

Snake Tales

In Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, there are 5 playable missions where you play as Snake instead of Raiden. All of the missions take place at the Big Shell cleanup facility. Some of the missions aren't all that "plausible" in the sense of the Metal Gear Solid story line. When Konami created these missions, they didn't have enough dough for voice acting so instead, they used text, lots and lots of text! I took my time and copied all the many pages of text so I hope you enjoy and if you don't have the time to read the interesting mixed up stories then just look at the summing up, next to the files. Also included are the "alternate endings" or different paths in the missions. Again these files are 100% virus, spamware, adware and whatever free. When I read the stories, I actually enjoyed them, a little weird but pretty cool. Check em out.

A Wrongdoing- In this mission, Snake is sent to infiltrate the Big Shell. Terrorists have taken over the Big Shell and have taken hostages including the President. Snake's job is to eliminate the terrorists and retrieve the hostages safely. Guess who is behind this, Fatman, yes he is terrorist leader! So Snake has to find Richard Ames in order to locate the hostages. After Snake gets into contact with one of the hostages, they transmit where they are so reinforcements can arrive and rescue the hostages. Snake then heads to the heliport to fight off Fatman, killing him and ending this whole fiasco. Snake then finds out after having a conversation with Ames before that Ames lead Fatman to the Big Shell to seek revenge on him after Fatman detonated a bomb next to a church, killing Ame's sister. So Ames lead Fatman there, then helped the President escape. In the end, the hostages were rescued, the President was safe, the terrorists were subdued but Ames was missing.

Big Shell Evil- In this mission, Otacon begs Snake to go and retrieve his sister, Emma who is working at the Big Shell as a systems programmer. Otacon is worried about her after hearing rumors about "accidental deaths" occuring at the Big Shell. So Snake goes and infiltrates the facility and upon arrival sees a little more than he bargained for, possible terrorists. After eavesdropping on one of the guards, Snake hears rumors of a "ghost" at Big Shell who was responsible for those accidental deaths. When Snake reaches Emma and babbles on for a while, they try to escape and encounter guards along the way. After leaving her in a secluded area, she is caught but yet again esacpes and is reunited with Snake. When Emma finds out what these "soldiers" are actually here for, it is all drug related. The group who took over the Big Shell was a Russian crime syndicate. They would use the Big Shell to smuggle drugs, a much easier method. As they're about to escape, Emma recovers some valuble intel from one of the nodes. In it contained a memo of who the real "ghost" actually was. The "ghost" was a man who's wife and child were murdered by the syndicate. To get revenge, he killed 2 men in the Big Shell in order to make it look like the work of a rival drug syndicate which in turn led to war between 2 drug gangs. His last memo stated he would join his family implying, well you get the point. As Snake and Emma try to escape, a Marine Corp harrier flies overhead and Snake takes it on with the help of Otacon and his Kasatka. Emma and her long lost brother finally reunite. So, the Big Shell employees who were taken hostage were saved, Emma and Otacon meet again and the whole incident was over drugs!

Confidential Legacy- In this mission, Colonel Campbell locates the retired Solid Snake and sends him on another mission. Snake must infiltrate a oil tanker that has been taken over by Sergei Gurlukovich and his men. Supposedly, a new Metal Gear is being stored in the holds of the tanker. In the mix, Meryl is also in on this whole affair. When Snake reaches the tanker, he tracks down Meryl and fianlly cathes up with her. She stated she was on the same mission as Snake so they split up and Snake heads to the cargo hold coming across many enemy guards. When Snake reaches the hold and carefully looks under a towering tarp, the supposed Metal Gear was nothing more then a rusty old shell. Gurlukovich along with Meryl finds Snake, soon finding out that Meryl was working with Gurlukovich. After a whole history about a incident in South America about uprisings and Metal Gear, Snake finds out Meryl's father was killed by Gurlukovich but Sergei has Meryl thinking otherwise. Snake plows through the guards and then duels out with Meryl, only to knock her out. Sergei reaches the two and starts talking to Snake about the current situation with Meryl. Apparently, he was using Meryl to get revenge on the Colonel after all the people Roy killed. He goes on about Meryl's father and that he was the one that killed him. The thing was, Meryl wasn't completly knocked out, so as Gurlukovich goes to shoot Snake, Meryl puts a bullet in him. When U.S. forces retrieve the tanker, Meryl is put under custody. When Snake and the Colonel visit her in the detention center, the Colonel reveals he got it on with his brother's (Matt) wife and conceived Meryl, so Campbell was Meryl's real father and the brother of Meryl's supposed father, get my drift? So in the end, the tanker was seized, the "Metal Gear" was useless scrap metal, the persuaded Meryl was in custody and Gurlukovich was dead. Yay!

Deadman Whispers- In this mission, Snake or Iroquois Pliskin was invited to join the SEAL team for a exercise along with Dead Cell. Yes, Dead Cell and their new leader, Vamp participated in a joint exercise alongside the SEAL team. A year before, Dead Cell commander, Colonel Jackson was arrested on charges of graft and corruption. Before they finish their exercise with the cooperating Dead Cell group, Vamp double crosses and wipes out most of the team. Snake then contacts Marine Commander, Scott Dolph who was trapped somewhere in the Shell. Dolph then tells Snake that his daughter was Colonel Jackson's wife so Scott was the only one who defended Dead Cell and their commander when he was arrested. The reason Dolph hired Snake to join was because he was afraid something might have gone wrong so he created Snake's counterpart- Lieutenant Junior Grade Pliskin. Snake now has to stop Vamp's rampage. Since this was an exercise, he isn't equipped with live rounds, nothing. When Snake tries to pursue Vamp, he comes across the many dead SEAL team bodies littered through one of the struts. One of the half dead soldiers explained to Snake that Vamp was going after the exercise commander, Navy Captain O'Brien. The reason Vamp started killing was to avenge Jackson and take care of those of backstabbed him. So now Snake suspects O'Brien of turning on Jackson. When Snake finds O'Brien, he soon dies of multiple stab wounds. After Snake pursues Vamp, before he dies, he spills everything out. After Jackson was arrested, Dead Cell was thought of as losers. So Vamp thought, if he started killing, it would make Jackson look more innocent. In the end, Jackson dies in prison, rumors state Jackson was falsely accused and Dead Cell was framed, a backup team secured the Shell, Dolph retired from the military and Dead Cell soon disbanded.

External Gazer- In this mission, Snake starts off at Philanthropy's hideout in New York. Otacon had just developed a new virtual reality system, a headset that completly emersed you in virtual battle. After Snake ends the vr mission, Mei Ling walks into their hideout and shows them a recent tabloid about a large unidentified monster in the waters near the Big Shell. The opputunity to get more information or pictures on the subject was just to hard to pass up. So Snake headed to the Big Shell and started snapping pictures but Olga showed up and started acting very off slant. It turned out she was a Olga from another universe. When Snake headed back to hideout, Snake and Otacon started debating on parallel universes. They think the line between their universe and other universes are unbalanced. In order to balance them, Snake is emersed in a vr stage where he destroys the water monster. This even disrupts the universes even more. When he took off the headset, Mei Ling stated, she wasn't the Mei Ling they knew and weird enough, Solidus Snake blows through the hideout and takes his "wife", Mei Ling, with him. Otacon had the idea to search for singularities of other parallel universes which meant Snake would have to go through many vr stages. Soon enough, Solidus tries to hack into the vr system to take over Snake but then fools Snake with a fake stage where you play as Raiden, but here, Raiden and his girlfriend, Rose is more than a little wacked out. When Solidus completely hacks into the system, Snake firsts faces off multiple Metal Gear Rays then, he faces off against Solidus himself, barehanded. When Snake finishes and takes off the headset, Olga and Otacon stand in the hideout and Olga disappears again after a few words of wisdom. Then, Otacon and Snake basically are reloaded into a "normal" universe. Finally, Mei Ling, the normal Mei Ling, walks back in and shows them the tabloid once again of the monster at Big Shell. In the end, according to Solidus, Otacon's vr system powered by the Koppelthorn Engine interfered with the parallel universes. Snake then questioned, what if Solidus was wrong, what if there was a device that allowed someone to externally observe and interfere with a parallel universe? Anyway, could you say this was one hell of a acid trip!

Facts

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance

The VR Missions were created by the "Script Team", series creator Hideo Kojima only produced the title.

In late 2000, Konami announced the development of "Metal Gear Solid X" for the Xbox. It was initially thought that it would be a version of (or the sequel to) Metal Gear Solid, but Konami later announced that it would be a combination of Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (which was still in development as well). Eventually, this project was renamed Substance and became an updated port of Metal Gear Solid 2.

The Xbox version was planned to be released in Japan, but Konami canceled it in September 2002, due to low Japanese Xbox sales numbers.
