Kazakhstan info:
The Republic of Kazakhstan is a country that stretches over a vast expanse of northern and central Eurasia. A portion of its territory west of the Ural River is located in eastern-most Europe. It has boarders with Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and has coast line on the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan was a Republic of the former Soviet Union and is now a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world by area, but its semi-desert (steppe) make it only the 57th country in population.
Native Kazakhs are a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated to the region in the 13th century. Russia conquered this area in the 18th century, and ultimately Kaz became a republic of the Soviet Union in 1936. During the 1950-1960 many Russians came to Kaz to help farm the land. Over time, this has caused an ethnic mixture and has now caused the non-Kazakhs to outnumber the native Kazakhs.
Although Kazakh is currently the official language, most people speak Russian. It is said that this is due to the fact that the Kaz people were forced to only speak Russian during the time that Russia ruled Kaz. In some of the smaller cities you will find more people speak Kazakh. I have also heard that many people speak Kazakh at home and Russian out in public.
