Political Systems in Action (September-December)

Second graders will learn about citizenship and each citizen's responsibility to obey laws and vote for their leaders.  They will learn about the political system and symbols.  In addition, they will learn about the history and geography of the United States beginning with the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims.

 

Economics:  Changes in the Way We Live (January-March)

The students will learn economic concepts such as wants and needs, good and services, opportunity costs, natural, capital, and human resources.  Students will evaluate decisions by listing advantages and disatvatages as they learn that each choice has a consequence.  They will also explore concepts of production and world trade.

 

Biographies:  Leadership Past and Present (April-June)

Second graders will read biographies of leaders of different times in history and begin to identify their common traits.  Students will then select a leader or influential person and conduct research on his or her life and contributions.  Students will then write a biography on this person identifying how a decision made by this person impacted the world.
