In 2nd grade, science is fun!
Throughout the year, we focus on three different science themes. During each of these themes, we engage in hands-on activities that help us learn more about the world around us.
The Life Cycle of Butterflies: We will observe and record the changes of painted lady butterfly larvae from caterpillar to adult. As we observe the changes, we will learn about their stages of development and their different parts. We will record our observations and discuss what we see and learn.
The Life Cycle of Butterflies was developed by the National Science Resources Center with support from the National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian Institution.
Balancing and Weighing: We will explore the relationship between balance and weight and learn strategies for making comparisons. We will explore by manipulating objects on a beam balance, building mobiles, and by using an equal-arm balance. We will also explore the relationship of density, weight, and volume among different foods.
Balancing and Weighing was developed by the National Science Resources Center with support from the National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian Institution.
Liquids: We will investigate substances that are dissolved and returned to their original form. We will make solutions, observe evaporation, and discover how some solutions crystallize. We will explore properties of liquids which include surface tension, miscibility, and density.
This unit combines two GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science), publications, Liquid Explorations and Involving Dissolving. They were developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley.
