Second Grade at OTES

Reading- First Quarter

In reading this quarter, we are reading for literary experience. This means we are reading to enjoy literature and become more familiar with story elements. You can help by reviewing the characters, setting, problem, solution and plot with your child after reading a ficitonal story. We will also read some informational texts to review text features such as labels, captions and heading. Our target reading level for this quarter is Level J. We are studying the author Tomie dePaola. Check out some of his books at the Wheaton Library!

Reading - Second Quarter

Second quarter focuses on reading to be informed.  Students will enjoy reading books that have facts with text features (labels, subheadings, photographs, etc.).  We will read Gail Gibbons books that tell us many facts about animals, transportation, and places. You can encourage your child to read non-fiction books during this fall.  Bats and owls are a favorite during October!  We will also be reviewing the concepts covered in quarter one plus reading plays.  Encourage your child to read with emotion and feeling.  It really brings a story to life!  The reading level for this quarter is K.

Reading- Quarter 3

At the beginning of the third quarter we return to the topic of reading for literary experience.  Inferencing, literature webs, tall tales, folktales, and comparing the different genres or kinds of literature will be introduced to the students. We encourage your child to read the many tall tales and folktales available at your library.  Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and many others are there for your entertainment. We will prepare for testing by reviewing main idea, summarizing, and how to answer test questions.  Also, biographies will be introduced by sequencing events and using timelines.  The reading target for this quarter is levels L.

Reading - Quarter 4

Our final quarter takes us through the fun journey of learning different kinds of poetry and writing poems of our own.  Alliteration, personification, and repetition are just a few of the kinds of poetry we will explore.  Then we will read a novel, and finally end the year with reading to perform a task by doing research on a topic. All students should be reading and responding in writing to a Level M reading book by the end of the year.
