What Happened at the March Meeting?

AAUW Minutes for May 2, 2009

A delicious spring brunch was held in the Scheuerman Room at William
Penn University, where the group admired the beautiful china cabinet
which Charlotte Sours found to display the silver tea/coffee service
owned by Penn. She also obtained the lovely china used for special
campus occasions. This was her last time in attendance at an AAUW
meeting in Oskaloosa as she and Richard will be moving back to Virginia
in mid-June.

The program was presented by Steve Noah, Penn’s Vice President for
Advancement, who, with his wife Jane, traveled to Rwanda to help
establish the Rwanda Experience, a program which brings Rwandan
students to William Penn University to study. Four students are
currently attending Penn and two of them were at the brunch.

Steve explained some of the history and political problems of the
small, but densely populated African country where a terrible genocide
took place in 1994 and a million people were killed. Rwanda now has a
progressive president and a functioning democracy, where currently over
half of the members of parliament are women.

In the future Steve would like to see up to sixteen Rwandan students
at Penn and an exchange of students and professors with a university in
Rwanda. There is also a program being planned to work with Rwanda on
agricultural concerns.

AAUW President Janet Wagner conducted the business meeting. The
agenda and minutes of the last meeting were approved. There was no
treasurer’s report as Pat Kitzman had to leave early due to another
commitment. Dues of $59 are due to her for the coming year. Evie
reported on a concern about pending legislation which would eliminate
fines for nursing homes for a variety of deficiencies. She urged us to
contact Governor Culver about the matter.

Membership chairperson Sue Van Wyk asked for new ideas for membership
events. In the book sale area, sorting has started and cards with the
sorting dates and potato bagging dates were distributed. Boxes are
needed. The book sale will be held Oct. 1-3 at Penn Central Mall. The
program committee will need to start meeting soon to plan programs for
next year. Sheets were sent around for serving on committees and
hosting meetings. If you didn’t sign up, please contact Janet to do
so. The natilnal AAUW Convention will take place in St. Louis June
26-28.

We will probably keep the meeting time of the third Tuesday of the
month, with the next meeting on Tues. Sept. 15.
