Welcome to the Open Source History Project!
It
is dedicated to the study of historical topics, with a concentration on the
Soviet Era in Russian history. Project’s main aim is to help other history
researchers by presenting them with documentary materials that I have available.
Second goal is to challenge the stereotypes that in some cases are treated as
facts. Third, assist in further documentary research.
The
reason for undertaking this project is the importance of primary source research
in studying history. Secondary sources, as well as published memoirs, have
oftentimes proved vulnerable to personal agendas, stereotypes, as well as the
pressures exerted by the desire to be accepted. Looking at the unchanging
primary sources is indeed, using a different medium altogether. History is very
rich – and primary sources tap that richness.
In
our research, the document selection process is an important issue. A general
rule in this project is using all accessible primary sources, not excluding
anything based on our reading of history. The details of this process are
discussed in the introduction to each individual topic.
For
some sections data will be limited. This lack of materials is referred to as
white space, and is a natural occurrence in an honest approach to history.
This
project is bilingual. Russian appears in regular font, English in bold. On some
topics, all materials will be available in both Russian and English. In others,
the actual documents will be available in one of the languages only. Navigation
links throughout the website as well as the introductory pages are planned to be
in both languages.
The first topic with which the OS History Project enters the Internet is the study of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia during the late 1930s. Particular emphasis is on their experience during the prewar year spent as part of the USSR.

Проект Открытый Доступ (OS History на английском) посвящен изучению истории используя в первую очередь первоисточники, а не их интерпретации. Мотивом создания проекта явилась важность первоисточников в изучении истории. Книги историков а также и опубликованные мемуары нередко уязвимы корыстности их авторов, стереотипам общества, а также и желанием быть одобренным окружающими. Неменяющиеся первоисточники, совсем другое измерение. История богата и первоисточники дают нам возможность приблизится к этому богатству.
В исследовании, важную роль занимает процесс подбора материалов. Общее правило проекта таково: использовать все доступные нам первоисточники, не исключая материалов из за нашей интерпретации истории. Особенности этого процесса описаны во вступлениях к конкретным темам.
В ходе наших исследований будут белые пятна, и это вполне нормальная явление в открытом изучении истории. Они должны оговариваться в вступительных статьях разделов.
Проект начат как двуязычный. На страницах где имеется более одного языка Русский выделен стандартным шрифтом, а Английский жирным. Навигация по сайту и вступительные статьи планируются на обоих языках. Часть документов будет полностью на двух языках. В других случаях документы будут иметься только на одном из языков.
