In the days long since past, there were such things as demons and spirits, but one by one they were all sealed away. Put to sleep in their chosen prisons, they will remain that way until someone, or something, breaks their seal and awakens them.

Chapter 1 - How It All Started

The rustlings of leaves and branches can be heard throughout the forest, followed by the sound of a man muttering to himself. A small group of branches are moved aside as a man dressed in an open dark blue button down shirt with a white sleeveless shirt underneath, khakis and hiking boots steps forward, and releases the branches. Not a tall man, but select in qualities. His hair is a light sandy brown; his eyes are a lovely shade of green and he has a very warm, inviting smile. Unfortunately he was not smiling, nor was he in a very good mood; this was because he was lost; lost in the very woods that surrounded his home on the outskirts of Glasgow.

"Great," he began to mutter again, "now where did Dom go? He was the one who wanted to go hiking and now I can't find him anywhere… in fact, where am I?"

The forest becomes silent and he begins to wonder if he'll ever find Dom, or for that matter, his way home. It suddenly occurs to him how quiet his surroundings have become, and begins to remember all the stories he used to hear about the woods when he was young. Stories of demons who ate young children and travelers who had lost their way; of faeries who enticed men deep into the forest then put them to sleep for hundreds of years.

"Don't be ridiculous Billy," he reassured himself, "there are no such things as demons and faeries! Those were just old stories people used to tell to keep the children from going into the forest and getting lost!" Billy then jumps as the silence of the forest is suddenly interrupted by loud rustlings of branches and leaves.

"I'M COMING FOR YOU LITTLE MAN!!! YOU BETTER RUN BILLY!!" growls a loud English-speaking voice.

"Hello Dom." Billy says recognizing the voice.

Dominic appears with a huge grin on his face from behind a large cluster of trees overgrown with vegetation. His short dark hair is spiked; he has deep blue eyes and unshaved stubbles of hair on his upper lip, chin and cheeks. He is wearing a red T-shirt under a khaki vest with matching cargo shorts and hiking boots as well.

"Little man?!" Billy inquired with his brow raised.

Dominic giggles, still pleased with himself from his little prank. "Aw Billy, you know I'm only foolin' ya! Don't take it so hard!"

Billy tries to look serious, but can't keep a straight face as he cracks a smile and begins to laugh. "Okay, but really, where were you? I've been looking for you for quite some time now."

"You have to come and see what I have found! Come on!!" He urged as he disappeared into the trees again. Billy, of course, followed in the same direction.

He sauntered along until he came to Dominic, who was standing by a large surface of stones. Billy stops and looks at it with him; a face of great stones that stands at the edge of a narrow valley.

"Okay, I'm here and all I see are rocks…Big rocks." Billy stated plainly.

"But look here." Dominic says as he moves several of the long strands of grass that cover the surface to reveal a carved out opening. This catches Billy's attention as his clear green eyes light up and he approaches the notch to study it further.

The opening was cut out perfectly round with ancient runes inscribed around the outer rim. He pokes his head inside to survey the interior and finds that stairs had been carved out and seemed to lead down an unlit passageway. "Wow…" He whispered under his breath.

"I'll bet you didn't even know that this was even here!" Dominic declared proudly.

"I had no idea…" Billy trailed off.

"Well?! Are we going in or not?!" Dom asked eagerly. Billy pondered on that very thought himself; whether to go in or not to. Though his instincts told him not to, his curiosity and sense of adventure teased his mind with far-fetched questions on what the interior of the cavern held. "Well…?" Dom inquired again. 'It could be an experience, but it could also be dangerous…' Billy thought to himself.

"Why not?!" He finally answers, a bit excited himself, as they both disappear into the hole.

* * *

As the two men descended the stone stairway toward the passage, a thought struck Billy's mind on how they would see once they got inside the cavern. They both reached the bottom of the steps and stared down the dark path. The sounds of ignitions filled the air around them as the metal urns that lined the walls light up with golden flames. Billy and Dominic shared the same startled expressions and slowly turn to see the other's reaction. "Let's continue on, shall we?" Billy manages to stammer out.

"Right." Dom answers hastily.

While they walk down the corridor, Billy and Dominic both look over their surroundings. The passage was made of dark stone, and it was large and rounded into a perfect circle that had running water flowing at the base. The walkway on which they strode on was a long flattened dark stone that rested on small pillars that rose from the water beneath them. The urns which lined the curved walls were suspended by metal fastenings that hung from the walls. Billy wondered if all of this was underground or if it was dug out of the hillside of a gully.

At the end of the passageway there was a circular door suspended by many smaller metal shafts. The door had more runes around the outside rim, identical to the ones around the entrance, and a large heavy handle that hung in the center. Dominic lifted the metal handle and began to pull with all his might while Billy had a closer look at the door. It didn't seem to be locked, but the lock may have been intended in the weight of the door itself. He continued on to the metal rails which held the structure in place. 'No,' he thought to himself, 'much too tight of a squeeze for either of us.'

Dominic finally gives in to the handle's obstructive defense and sits at the edge of the path to stare into the flowing water. Billy walks over to where Dom had been standing before and looks up at the doors interior; seemed ordinary, other than the fact that it was impenetrable. That's when he noticed it, a tiny rectangular piece of paper with oriental characters written on it. He had seen others like it when he had visited Japan; they were sold in the shrines to ward off evil, intruders and such. He tried to snatch it down but it was far out of his reach, so he began to try and jump for it. Dominic watched this for quite some time before he couldn't stand it anymore. "Billy…what are you doing…?"

"Trying to get that scroll down." He replied as he continued in his futile attempts. "Can I help?" "Sure!" Billy said, at last standing still to catch his breath.

Dominic crouches down and cups his hands together to make a foothold. Billy carefully steps into Dom's hands and is lifted up to the scroll where he immediately snatches it off of the door's smooth surface. As he snatches the paper the door opens slowly.

Billy jumps down and they both peer into the opening. Inside is a great circular chamber lined completely with dark stone with more supported paths that circled around the interior rim of the room. Underneath them is a huge lake, and in the center loomed a large willow tree with dark leaves. Around the interior there were more torches, already lit.

Billy and Dom walked the path that surrounded the mysterious tree, inspecting it thoroughly. "This is IT?! A tree?! All of that for a tree?!" complained Dominic, a bit irritated.

"So it seems… maybe it was a sacred tree or something." Billy sighed in a disappointed tone.

"GREAT!! A SACRED TREE!! FABULOUS!!" Dominic raved. But Billy wasn't convinced that someone would go through all of the trouble of building such a secluded, secure structure only to house a tree. He looks it over a bit more, searching for anything of significance. "Well, do you want to head back to your house? It should be getting late about now." asked Dominic.

"Not just yet, Dom. Give me a few more minutes, and then we can go back." answered Billy as he disappeared behind the morbid willow. Still not satisfied with the fact of it being just a willow tree that was closed up in the tomb for what must have been hundreds of years, he continues his search.

After examining the willow for the last time, he decided to give it up. He reached out and touched it admitting defeat; but as he does it begins to tremble violently. Billy quickly withdraws his hand and begins to back step as the tremors from the willow began to break up the walls of the cavern. He runs around the side toward the entrance where Dominic is waiting impatiently and nearly runs past him as he now stands frozen staring frightfully at the tree. "Come on Dom!! Let's go!!" Billy urges, then glances over his shoulder to see what he's looking at.

A dark cryptic figure with crimson glowing eyes slowly rises from the trunk of the morbid tree, regenerating organs and skin. Billy grabs Dom's arm and rushes out of the circular doorway.

As they run the passage collapses around them; Dominic drops the scroll and it falls into the water. They try desperately to reach the cavern entrance as maniacal laughter fills the cave.

"I'm coming for you…" a smooth, womanly voice taunted.

"Dom! Now is not the time for your sick jokes!!!" snaps Billy.

"I didn't say anything!!!" Dominic panted out.

"I'll take my revenge on you, you who has sealed me!!" the voice raged on.

"Hey Billy, I think this person has mistook us for someone else!" Dom says breathlessly. Billy glances back, and then he speeds forward with a sudden burst of energy. "YOU TELL'EM!!!" he shouts back at him. Dom looks over his shoulder to see an enraged demon coming at him at full speed! Suddenly Dom and Billy are running side by side again. With the exit in view and the cavern nearly on top of them, they make a final effort of escape before they collapsed; they dove for it.

The two of them land hard outside and the cavern closes in behind them. Dominic and Billy sit up against the large stone surface and catch their breath. "Do you think it made it out alive?" Billy heaved.

"I don't think anything could have survived that." Dom answered.

"You mean anything but me, don't you?" the voice mocked from above them. "Aw no! Not again!!" Billy stammered, still winded.

They looked upward to see their pursuer, who was seemingly hanging in midair. She was a tall woman with long dark auburn hair, deep blood-red eyes, and lightly tanned skin. Tattooed to her left hand were gothic-looking chains that started at her fingertips and linked halfway up her arm. She wore a loose-fitting tunic made of black material that had small brown leather straps wrapped around her upper arms and midriff; tight black pants that connected between her two largest toes and three more leather straps around her upper right leg.

She smiled demonically down at them with abnormally large canines, then grasped the air and formed a massive black scythe. "Now I shall have my revenge!!" she growled, coming down on them. Billy and Dom didn't wait around; they sped off again into the woods.

Somehow or another Billy and Dominic had gotten separated, and the demon was chasing after Billy. He raced toward his house, trying not to lose the trail or his footing.

Billy's lungs burned as he carried the weight of his aching legs, and became clumsy on where he stepped. He could see his home and began to pick up a bit more speed when he fell and landed in a small cluster of undergrowth. Billy lay very still in his covering hoping that he wasn't found by his pursuer. The forest became silent and he could hear her making her way through the trees and overgrown brush at high speed. Billy held his breath as she drew nearer to his finding spot. She stopped and landed on the ground with both of her feet only inches from him, her eyes searching the surrounding area.

"Come now," she gloated, "do you really think I will not find you? Do you even know whom of which you have enraged? I am the merciless slayer of everything that stands in my way! I am death herself, Maura!" Billy tried to silence his heavy breathing while he listened to her mad ranting. 'Maura', the name of his hunter echoed throughout his mind. Her short pointed ears perked up and she grinned malevolently. Maura then leapt into the air and disappeared in the shadows of the trees.

Billy lay motionless a few moments more, fully catching his breath. Then when he was sure she had gone he jumped up from his cover and attempted to reach his home. He made it only a few feet before he found himself being held up over the ground in a strong vice-like grip. Maura laughed evilly as she held him up to her eyelevel. At this height, Billy's legs dangled free in the air; more than a foot above the ground.

"I told you that I would find you, and now I have you!" She boasted.

"You knew I was there the whole time, didn't you?! How did you find me?!" Billy demanded.

Maura smiled proudly, "Your own thoughts gave you away, I heard them as clearly as you her me now."

"You read my mind?!" Billy stammered.

"Yes, it's one of my many capabilities. Now my captured prey, I'll make your death a quick one…"

"Wait! Read my mind, that will show you that you are mistaken!" Maura glared at him with her soulless blood-colored eyes, she hated making mistakes and never admitted that she had ever made one.

"Fine." She stated coldly, and then stared deep into his green eyes. She listened to every conversation, and saw everything he had ever seen, but there was no trace of even a sealing spell. Maura then came to the shrine she was in and saw him touch the tree, she felt the flood of fear that filled him as he and Dominic made their escape.

Maura set Billy back down on the ground gently; her eyes were downcast, she couldn't bear to look him in the face. "I apologize, I would have killed you. There was no reason for my rage directed toward you and your companion."

"Oh, no harm done I guess. You were angry for being sealed, right?" 'He's so kind, why is he so kind?' she thought to herself.

Back at Billy's house, Dominic is getting very worried wondering what happened to Billy and if he was caught by the demon. The sun has nearly set and he considers calling the police. He looks toward the woods again and sees Billy walking toward him with Maura following him. "Billy!! Watch out! Behind you!" he shouts running at them. Billy and Maura stop and watch Dom charge up to them madly.

"Dom, this is Maura, she doesn't want to kill us anymore." Billy stated calmly. Dominic's mouth drew ajar when he heard this.

"Um, ok…that's, uh, great…I guess…where is she going to go now?" Billy and Dom both looked up at her for an answer.

"I have nowhere to go, I wasn't supposed to be put to sleep; so I don't know if my comrades are looking for me or if they've given me up."

"Then stay here until you find something out." Billy offered. Dominic glanced at him with a stunned expression; he didn't like that idea at all.

"I can stay with you?" she inquired, a bit confused. Billy looked to Dominic, who flared his eyes in silent protest.

"I feel like it's partially my fault, you know, waking you up and all. So yes, you can stay here if you want."

"Thank you, Billy." A small grateful smile lifted on her face.

Having a fondness of heights, Maura claimed the vacant attic room as hers. A large circular window gave her view to the outside, the floors where wooden and the walls where painted a very pale grey. Billy made his way up the stairs, his arms full with a large sleeping bag and many lanterns with small candles; he placed them on the floor in front of her. "Are you sure you don't want one of the guestrooms? They're larger and have, well, furniture."

Maura looked over at him from the window; "no, I like the view of the outside world from here. This is to my liking, thank you."

"Alright Maura, we'll be downstairs then." He said as he went back down the stairwell. She went back to the window, dusk had fallen and she could see the cities lights in the near distance.

Maura had been pondering on his thoughts and memories that she had seen from before; when she read them she had felt every emotion that he had ever experienced. Such feelings of love and sorrow where intended to be sacred and never seen by others, but she had seen them and had gone through them along with him. Maura had began to feel an unusual closeness to Billy, and she wasn't about to let anything happen to the one who released her.

Chapter 2 - Lonely Heart

Billy and Dominic sat in the dinning room to eat their breakfast; Maura was still asleep in her room. Billy sips his coffee as he looked out the large pained windows that lined the wall; for being summer, the sky wasn't sunny at all. In fact, it was quite cloudy and looked as though it would storm. Dom ate his eggs and toast, grateful that Maura wasn't awake yet. He didn't like the idea of her staying with them; or that she was able to look into other people's thoughts, even though she promised Billy she wouldn't. Billy's mind was on other things, paying the bills for the month and sending off the letters gathering dust in his desk.

"I think I'll go into town today." Billy said, disrupting the stillness.

"Today? It's going to storm though."

"I'll be back before it does. Anyway it's been unnaturally humid lately, we need a good storm." Maura crept down the stairs and walked toward them.

"Did you say you were going out today?" she inquired.

"Yes, into the city to run some errands." Billy stated.

"Can I go with you?"

"If you want to go, you can." Maura smiled to herself and went into the kitchen to find something to eat.

"Want to come with us, Dom?" Dominic looks down at his plate, sliding his toast across the drippy yellow yolks.

"No, I have a new script to read over. I'll stay here." Billy could see that putting up Maura was really getting to him, but it was too late, he had already invited her to stay.

"Ok then." He said, walking into the kitchen to put his glass in the sink.

Maura sat cross-legged above the table eating a pear. Billy rinsed out his mug then turned to face her. "You know you'll have to walk in town, people will start to stare."

"So let them, I'm a great warrior of Kami-Sama. I do not care what humes think."

"Humes?" Billy inquired.

"…Mortal men. You know, those who live to die."

"Yes, well, I'd rather not make people fret if you don't mind." She shrugged, "As you wish."

Leaving the house, Billy and Maura walk the path to town in silence. A small winding dirt road worn down deep into the ground like a trench; stones were fitted in the sides long ago, and now were overgrown with moss and grass. The trees loom overhead and would have shaded the path if it had been a clear day.

When they were nearly to town, Billy decided to break the silence. "What is it that you need to do in town?"

"I'm buying some clothing to merge with the new society." She calmly replied. "You have money?" Maura stopped and pulled out a small leather pouch from her belt. She opened it to show him the gold coins with hollow centers and rune inscriptions. Billy laughed, "maybe you should stop at the coiner's first." She put the pouch back and continued on.

In town they part ways, Maura finds the coiner and Billy goes on to the postal office. As the small greasy man inspects her coins, Maura looks at old maps and globes. The coiner smiles to himself with his dingy, poorly kept teeth; "I'd say that these aren't more than old Chinese yen. I can only give you about fifty pounds for the whole pouch."

Maura spins the large aged globe carefully with her long nails. "They're not Chinese yen; I advise that you look again."

"Oh? Then why is there Chinese characters printed on them?" "It's not Chinese; it's the language of the Guado Tribe. And I know that there's more than fifty pounds worth of currency there, now I suggest that you tell me the actual value before I eradicate you." Maura glared at the coiner at him over the counter with burning crimson eyes.

Maura comes out of the coiner's bouncing a large roll of money in her hand and humming to herself happily. "Well, that wasn't so hard. Now, where should I go first?"

Billy walks out of the post office, and heads toward the dirt path. He looks at the dark overcast sky, it seemed as though the sky would open up at any moment. "Hope I don't get caught in that. Maura should be starting home soon too." He thought out loud, and then started on the road home.

Meandering down the pathway at a fair speed, Billy began to hear a faint resonate of light laughter. He stopped and listened to be sure. He hears it again, among the trees rustling in the wind. Billy pulls himself up and peers over the over the edge of the deep path. Only trees swaying in the strong wind. He stares closely into the woods and catches a glimpse of white. Pulling himself completely out on to grass, he treads softly toward the woods. He stops a few feet from the brim of the forest, watching and listening carefully. The forest had fallen quite; he turns to go back to the path when he hears the faint laughter echo throughout the forest. Billy quickly whirls around and loses balance, falling onto his back in the grass.

The sound of trees in the wind and the strange alluring mirth filled his mind; then cold beads of ice settle on his face. 'Snow? In the summer?' he thought. The laughter left him and he opened his eyes to see snow falling down from the dark sky. 'But how…' Someone was standing over him now, a woman dressed in white. She was small with a creamy skin complexion and long dark hair which was braided into thick twisted braids. Her eyes were dark and she had long rounded ears that angled down against her head. Leaved vines grew around her body and through her hair. She wore an off-white button-down sundress that fell at her knees, a sheer white cloak that glittered silver and tied across her chest with small silver ropes. She wore no shoes.

The woman smiles down at him with a beautiful, sad smile and then turns and runs off into the woods. Billy jumps to his feet and pursues her, shouting for her to wait. Twisting around trees and under branches, he follows her deeper and deeper into the forest. She skipped through the woods in long high leaps, seeming to be almost floating, as if gravity had almost no hold on her at all. "Wait!" he pleated, "who are you?!" Her only response was a light giggle. 'The laughter! It was her!' Billy was now determined to catch her; he had to know what was going on. He comes through some brush and stops short looking downward; he was standing on a small ledge overlooking a large ravine.

Billy stared over the rim, watching the snow slowly fall down onto the trees below. 'Just yesterday it was warm and humid, now it was windy and snowing. What's going on?'

He could feel that someone was watching him, he wasn't alone. Billy spun around and found the mysterious woman was standing behind him, startled that he found her. Before she could disappear into the trees again, Billy tackled her to the ground. "Now you're going to tell me what the hell is going on around here!" he said trying to keep her from struggling free. She fought a bit more then seemingly gave up.

"Fine, just get off of me!" she said in her soft voice, a bit irritated.

"No, answer my questions first." Billy stated stubbornly. "first of all, who are you?"

Her dark eyes studied his face carefully, "The Light of the Forest."

"Why is it snowing in the middle of summer?" Billy asked, in a calmer tone. "This is snow?" she inquired, confused.

"You've never seen snow?"

"no, but my mother said it was like the cherry blossoms in the east."

"What's your name?" He asked, now looking examining her features and noticed a three dotted mark on her temple.

"...the warriors of the Sun called me 'Morino Akiko'." "Moree-no Akiko?" She laughed lightheartedly, "Akiko will do suffice."

Billy got up and lifted Akiko to her feet, he was sad that he would have to see her go. "I have never been caught before; I feel that I should reward you for being the first."

"No, that's quite alright." Billy said, looking around trying to find his direction.

"yes, it is. I could give you a wish if you like." Billy looked down at her confused; she stared up at him with unfathomable eyes. He decided to humor her. "maybe later." She smiled at him, "I won't forget." A strong gust of wind kicked up leaves and fallen blossoms and Billy shielded his eyes, when he removed his arms Akiko was gone and he was alone. He started off into the forest, looking for the path to get home.

With the thick flakes falling down on him and unfamiliar landscape, he was soon very lost. The snow started to stick and pile up. Billy's light jacket wasn't nearly warm enough for this type of weather.

The sun was now on the distant side of the sky and it was getting late in the day; Billy was still far from home. He was tired and cold, and was starting to become numb. He found a large oak tree with thick branches that sheltered itself from most of the falling ice. Billy curled up at its base, by the large roots, and tried to keep warm. 'I wonder how long I've been out here…' he began to ponder. 'hope Maura got back before the snow. and Dom is probably worried too. just wish I wasn't alone anymore…' he started to drift, trying to keep conscience. The faint sound of melodic laughter echoed throughout his mind. He opened his eyes to find Akiko smiling softly down at him. "Akiko…"

A few minutes later, Billy wakes up covered in a warm white coat. He looks over to see Akiko seemingly praying to the oak tree, she stops and glances at him. "Are you alright?" she asked, concerned.

"Yes, how did you know I was here?"

"You made your wish, it was granted."

"My wish…?" he inquired.

"You said you didn't want to be alone anymore. So I'll stay by you, as long as you desire it." Billy couldn't bring himself to say anything; he really did want to be close to her. Something about her soothing atmosphere and her sad, beautiful smile. "Would you like to go home now? The sun is starting to set now." Billy stood up and handed her the coat, which she put one over her short, thin sundress.

"Do you know the way?" He asked.

"Near the lake, right? I know the way; it isn't too far from here." Billy looked at the tree where Akiko was kneeling, there was an identical dotted symbol with something illegible carved above it.

"What is this?" he asked her. Akiko ran her small fingers over the carvings "Hinansho" she moved down to the symbol "this one is the mark of the Yosei. Hinansho is my mother."

"Yosei? Your mother?" he inquired.

Akiko smiled "the humes called us Yosei or Faeries, but our race is the Ki, forest-dwelling spirits. Hinansho has the protective form of a wise oak tree, but she is still my mother."

"Oh, I see."

"Shall we go before it gets late."

"Aye"

Maura watched intensely out the windows and Dom paced around the house worried for Billy. It was getting late in the evening and he had not yet returned, the temperature was also dropping rapidly.

Maura's ears perk "someone's approaching."

Dominic rushed to the window she was at looking in the darkness "where?! Is it Billy?!"

Maura listened "They're coming up the walkway now; there are two sets of footsteps." The front door opens and Billy and Akiko stand in the entryway.

"Billy! Where were you all this time?! We were about to call the police!" Dominic burst out.

"Yes, we were very worried…and who is that?!" Maura demanded. Billy closes the door then hangs up his coat and puts his shoes away.

"I got a little side tracked, that's all. And this is Akiko, she is staying with us." Akiko smiled up at Dom and Maura as Billy took her coat; Maura glared down at her. She didn't like her, or the idea of Billy taking such a fondness of her.

Dom smiles back at her; he notices her long rounded ears and markings on her forehead. "Billy, she's not another demon is she?"

"I resent that remark!" Maura growls at him.

"No, Akiko is a, um, sort of a faerie so to speak…" Billy says, scratching his head.

Maura cuts her eyes "so, she's a Ki…"

"Yes, I am one of the last of the Ki." Akiko softly replies. Maura's eyes dimly glow a deep, fiery red; a Ki. One of the eldest races, they came from the ancient trees and watched over the forests. The humes called them faeries and feared that they would lure them deep into the woods and put them to sleep for hundreds of years; many of the Ki were wiped out instead of sealed. If any, very few survived.

Dominic notices the intense malicious scowl Maura was giving to Akiko as Billy talked with her blissfully.

A sly grin of mischief formed on his face "what's wrong Maura, are you jealous of her?" Maura's malevolent gaze moved to Dom.

"No, I am not!"

"I think you are! And you know what else?" he gets close to her so Billy couldn't hear. "I think he fancies her!" That was it; Maura's fuse broke; now she had had enough. And she was taking it out on Dom. Outside of the house her infuriated ranting could be heard.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN CALM DOWN?!! I DON'T CARE IF THE NEIGHBORING TOWN CAN HEAR ME!!!!"

Chapter 3 - A Shooting Star doesn't Have a Past...

Billy sleeps on the small narrow couch in his bedroom; as he shifts his cramped back muscles he falls off of the couch and onto the floor with a THUD. Now the reason that Billy was sleeping on the couch in this own room was because Akiko was sound asleep in his bed. Maura had tried to do away with her every chance she got, so Billy had her stay in his room to make sure that nothing would happen to her.

Billy sits up rubbing his head from where he had landed; he mutters to himself as he checks the clock. 3.47 am and the fifth time he had fallen off the couch. He could've gone into one of the guestrooms, but he knew too well that Maura was probably lurking about unseen. He gave up the couch and climbed into bed next to Akiko, hoping Maura wouldn't poke in during the night.

He watched Akiko as she slept; she looked just as tranquil as she did when she was awake. Her long soft curls draped over her pillow and cascaded over the edge of the mattress as she dozed bundled up on her side. Her eyebrows were perfect thin arches above her deep almond-shaped eyes traced with thick dark lashes; her nose was small and round and her light creamy skin was untarnished. He moved a dark lock of her hair from her face as she sighed in her dreams and smiled slightly. Billy wrapped his arms around her curved petite figure and soon fell asleep.

Billy awoke alone that morning. He glanced at the muted alarm clock, almost nine. He stretched and inhaled a delicious aroma that filled the house. 'mmm…Dom must be cooking breakfast. smells good.' He rolled out of bed and put on his robe and slippers. While going down the stairs, Billy tried to decide what the appetizing scents were. A combination of eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, and toast was what he guessed. He walks into the dinning room; Dom and Maura sat in silence at the table. Dominic drank his coffee and Maura sipped her tea. 'creepy…' he thought to himself.

He sits down at the large square table with them. "Good Morning" Greets Dom.

"Good morrow" Maura also greets sipping from her cup.

"Morning" Billy responds to them. He looks out the window; the sky is still dark and heavy. "Aw, it's not going to snow more is it? Such unusual weather." "The weather channel says that there is no explanation for it either. We were supposed to have nice warn sunny weather, but it seems to have vanished. Now there's just snow, and a lot of it." Dom states. Maura is deep into her own thoughts as Billy and Dominic discuss the strange weather, she grasps the tarnished silver pendant that hung from her neck.

Akiko comes from the kitchen balancing two large plates in her hands. Dom and Maura's eyes light up as the smell of breakfast approaches them. "Oh, good morrow Billy; your breakfast will be out in a minute." She smiles at him sweetly as she places the plates down in front of Dominic and Maura.

"Thank you Akiko, it smells fabulous."

"Oh yes! And it tastes divine!"

"Thanks 'kiko!" Maura and Dom say in between bites. She disappears into the kitchen again.

"So Billy, can we keep her?!" Dom asks, grinning. Billy looks over at him confused.

"Why wouldn't we?"

"Well you fancy her, right?! Why else did I see two in your bed when I walked by this morning?" Billy's eyes dart to Maura as she breaks the cup in the hands enraged.

"WHAT?!!" she demands angrily. Dom's expression changes to a wide-eyed tense stare; he knew he had said the wrong thing.

Akiko comes back in to find Billy trying to keep Maura from killing Dominic. "What's going on?" she quietly interrupted.

"LIAR!!! BILLY WOULDN'T…AKIKO!!! YOU'RE THE CAUSE OF ALL MY ANGUISH!!! LET'S END IT NOW!!!" Maura lunges at her, but Dominic and Billy pounce on her and hold her before she can. She pushes them back and speeds toward Akiko, who jumps away at the last moment; Maura pushes off the wall and comes at her who is slowly floating to the ground. Akiko lands and places the two large plates she was carrying on the table; then she turns towards Maura and creates a barrier of light, which she hits and falls to the floor unconscious. Billy and Dominic stand with their mouths ajar, Akiko smiles at them sweetly.

"Your breakfast is ready Billy!"

"er, em, thank you Akiko."

Later that morning, Billy stood out on the back deck sipping a scotch wearing his kilt with a heavy knit sweater. Dominic holds a bag of ice on Maura's head in the living room while she lies on the couch. He is dressed in his blue jeans and a warm grey fleece, but is still chilled by the sudden change of weather. Dom wonders how she isn't cold at all wearing her large black pipe-legged jeans, a grey tank top and a silk long-sleeved over shirt. She groans and curses Akiko's name; Dominic smiles, sort of glad she didn't have a concussion. He decided that Maura wasn't so bad, and if anything were to happen, they had Akiko to help them.

Dominic looks out to Billy on the deck out of the open sliding-glass door. "Hey Billy, what are we going to do when everyone else shows up?"

Billy thinks a moment "I guess they'll have to behave; I don't think Sean, Elijah and Orlando will think we're sane if we tell them the truth." They both laugh at the idea. Akiko comes into the room wearing one of Billy's shirts and a pair of his trousers, which are hanging onto her small waist by the belt. "Will those do for you? It's far too cold for you to be wearing that dress of yours." She giggles at Billy's remark.

"It's a little big, but very warm. Thank you Billy." Maura grumbles at her from the couch.

"Do you two think you can behave yourselves while our friends visit us for a while? They have to think you're like normal people." Billy explains to them. Akiko smiles

"Of course, I can act like a hume." Maura sighs in a displeased manner "I suppose so." Billy and Dominic both sigh with relief.

There's a knock at the front door, Billy walks over. "That must be Elijah; he said he'd be here today." He opens the door to find Elijah tied and gagged in front of him.

"Is this the place?" a light New York accented voice says from behind him. "em, excuse me, who are you?" Billy asks, peering around his bound friend. They are pushed inside and Elijah is tossed aside and a small woman stood in the doorway holding a large silver handgun out in front of her, pointed at Billy who had been knocked down on the floor. She was very tan with black hair and her eyes were hidden behind a pair of large sunglasses. She wore a grey and white pinstriped suit, a grey hat with small white feathers, and shined black shoes; she resembled a mobster in aspect.

Billy's eyes were wide and on the gun "Is this a stick up or something?!!"

She grinned "Yeah, something like that; Elijah stole my heart and I stole him! Somethin' tells me I'll be makin' the papers when word gets out! They'll read "The Old School Gangsta' in a New Age World Has Returned!"

"Returned?! Where were you before?!" Billy stammers.

"Tsk Tsk, A shooting star doesn't have a past. It just burns like a flame and is gone before your very eyes, that's my kinda life good lookin'!" Billy panics; this person was obviously daffed in the head.

Akiko comes in with a tray of tea "tea time! …oh! Billy's friends! Good thing I made extra food!"

"not now Akiko…"

"Oh wow! Food!" the woman interrupts "We're starvin'!! Haven't eatin' since the New York airport!" She walks over to Elijah and pulls out a large bladed knife. Billy panics, but Elijah just stays calm and glares impatiently at the woman as she cuts him free with one slice down the middle.

"I really wish you wouldn't do that. It gets tiring you know." Elijah states bluntly to her; his stomach growls loudly. "You could've at least fed me this time!" Billy is surprised

"You mean this isn't the first time she's done this to you?!"

"Oh, Billy Geneva, Geneva Billy. She's an old girlfriend who I can't seem to get rid of." Geneva grins at Billy "Nice ta meet'ya!" Billy smiles nervously at her "time to explain some things 'Lijah."

They all sit around the dinning room table; Elijah and Geneva eat the lunch Akiko made gratefully. Billy sips some tea and Dominic stares at Geneva with great interest; finally she notices. "What?"

"I have a question! You're the Ruthless Shooting Star, Right?!"

She takes another large bite, "Yeah, so what?"

"How many are there? Is there a line of you guys in a family or what?!" "Nope, only one: me." Dominic looks confused "what? But that would make you over two hundred years old!"

"I'll be 1,998 next March." She continues to eat her sandwich. Billy and Dom exchange looks, then look to Elijah for help. Akiko comes in and puts another sandwich on their plates

"Oh wow! I'll have to mark it on the calendar!" Geneva smiles at her and starts on the next sandwich.

"How can you be that old?!" Dom exclaims. Akiko looks over at them perplexed

"She's still young yet…Dryads live to be much older than that!"

Elijah looks at her astounded "how did you know she's a dryad?!"

Geneva chuckles "she's a Ki."

"A wha..?"

"er, em, forest spirit!" Elijah looks from Akiko to Billy to Dom then back to Geneva.

"I thought you said that all the other spirits were sealed" Elijah says to her under his breath.

"They were" she replies, "I don't know how she was awoken."

Maura awakens for her nap on Billy's large soft couch; she sits up and stretches her long arms out as far as they go. She floats through the dinning room and into the kitchen, then returns with a glass of milk and sits down at the table. She peers at Geneva from across the table. "Is she going to stay as well?" she asked groggily. Billy looks toward Elijah and Geneva for an answer.

"Do you mind if she stays Billy?" Elijah asks.

"Well, as long as she doesn't point that thing at me anymore, I don't mind." Billy said, pointing at her handgun on the table. "We have more than enough room around here."

"I guess we should put up a sign in the window 'lodging for spirits. Vacancies open.'" Dom says lightheartedly.

Maura carries in Elijah's two suitcases and Geneva's duffle bag and brings them into one of the empty rooms. Akiko sits on Billy's bed, watching the snow fall out the window; Billy stands in the doorway. "Were you sealed as well?" he asked, breaking the silence.

"Yes. I was asleep until a few days before you found me."

"What was it like?"

"Like a long dream, I felt alone. I could hear the deepest thoughts of people; many of them were poignant. It made me want to not be alone anymore."

"You're not alone now."

"I know. I just don't want to feel like that again." Billy came over and sat next to her on the bed; he put his arms around her and held her close like he had the night before. Watching from the hallway, Maura felt a heavy pain in her chest that weighed her down; why couldn't she be close to him like that? For once, the pain over took her anger, and she didn't want to do anything but curl up and die. She wished she had never awakened to find these feelings; at that moment, she would have rather lived the lonely life of a warrior. He released her, why couldn't they live together?

Maura turned and crept down the hallway; Akiko looked in the empty doorway, and then went back to watching the summer snow with Billy. Downstairs, Elijah and Dominic had found the most potent wine in the cellar and brought it upstairs to drink in the kitchen. Maura came down the stairs and found Geneva wrapped up in a blanket next to the fireplace shivering. "What's wrong with you?" "I-I don't like the snow…O-or the rain…" Maura gives her a puzzled look, and then sits down next to her. She notices an unopened Sake bottle sitting next to her; she picks it up and pulls the cork out with one of her claws.

"Can I ask you something?" Maura says, taking a swig.

"Sure, what?"

"How does Elijah know? It's not like a dryad to share their real form with mortals."

"We got caught in the rain one day; I c-can't hold my form in the rain, so when my appearance changed he asked. I never could lie to him, so I told him the truth. I thought he would think I was crazy or something, but he believed me. I guess there are still people who want to believe in us." Maura takes another drink, and then hands the bottle to Geneva.

"Why weren't you sealed?"

"I fooled'em all; I took on the form of a wandering samurai. There were so many from the east at that time, nobody second guessed another…except one. A female warrior, she had more brains than all of them; I knew she had found me out, but she was killed in battle by a demon before she could do anything about it. Shame, I looked forward to combatin' her. Afterwards, I wandered the world; never staying in one place too long. I ran into Elijah in America, so I've stayed there since then."

Geneva takes another drink then passes the bottle back to Maura. "I thought you and Elijah weren't together?"

"That doesn't mean anything to me. I just want to be close to him, know he's alright, ya know?"

Maura grew silent, they weren't a couple yet she just wanted to be close to him; that was how it was with her. Dom and Elijah struggle with their wine in the kitchen; they couldn't find the corkscrew so they were using a nail file to try and pop the cork out. Akiko comes down stairs and goes into the kitchen to start dinner. Dom and Elijah come out and sit on the couch by Geneva and Maura, passing around the sake bottle waiting for dinner. Billy comes down a few minutes later and joins them.

Dom passes the bottle "I hope this odd weather stops soon, we were going to the lake this weekend when Sean and Orlando were here."

Maura grasps her pendant "I have a bizarre feeling about this weather, almost like it was brought on by something." Dom examined her in the firelight; ample chest, washboard stomach, lightly tanned skin, dark lashes, dark auburn hair, and blood-red eyes. Thought he had originally thought of her as a monster, he found that she also had her good qualities as well; he could get used to her.

Chapter 4 - Snow Means Love

Early in the morning, Akiko is in the kitchen making a large breakfast for Billy and Dominic's friends, who would arrive that morning. Billy, Dominic, Elijah, Maura and Geneva all sit at the dinning room table, smelling the delicious aromas of Akiko's cooking. "Oooo…smells good! I can't wait to eat!" Dominic says merrily.

"I hate to say it, but Akiko cooks better than you Dom." Billy teases.

"I know, but as long as I can eat it, it's okay with me!" Maura sits and fumes over Billy giving attention to Akiko even when she's not in the room.

"I'll be right back." She says, going into the kitchen.

Akiko mixes pancake batter while singing about it to herself. "And eggs, can't forget eggs! Mix mix mix, oh it's going to taste so good!"

"Hey Akiko, let me help you!" Maura interrupts her cheerful melody.

"Okay, here." She hands Maura a bowl of eggs. "Beat these eggs for me, that would help."

"Er, alright!" Maura takes the bowl and Akiko goes back to making pancakes. She sets the bowl of eggs on the floor and looks down at it smirking. 'I'll beat these eggs really good, and Billy will love'em!' Maura thinks to herself. "AH!!!" She shouts as she brings a powerful wave of energy down on the unsuspecting bowl of eggs; which explodes upon impact, covering Maura and splattering over the walls.

"Oh my" Akiko says wiping Maura's face with a clean rag "I didn't mean to kill the eggs. Just beat them with a whisk." 'Now she tells me!' Maura skulks out of the kitchen and toward the stairs to clean up. Everyone sitting at the table watches her with wide eyes and questioning expressions.

"Not one word." Maura states as she climbs up the stairs. Akiko pokes out of the kitchen

"Is she gone?"

"Yeah, what happened?" Elijah asks.

"Umm, I guess cooking isn't her strongest point…I'll be done soon though." She goes back in the door.

There's a strong knock at the door followed by the doorbell ringing. "I'll get it!" Dominic shouts jumping from his seat and rushing to the door. Upon opening the door Dominic is slammed to the floor by an awesome force.

"Hi Dom!!!" He opens his eyes to find a small child sitting on his chest grinning down at him.

"Alexandra! Let Dom up!" Sean says from the doorway. She jumps off of him and Orlando helps Dominic up. Suddenly Dominic is knocked back on the ground as Elijah runs madly past him and jumps on Sean.

"Sean!!! I missed you!!!" Elijah shouts.

"I missed you too, now get off! You're heavy!" Elijah jumps down and once again Orlando is helping Dominic up off of the hardwood floor.

"Hello Orli." Dominic greets as he comes up.

"Good to see you Dom! You too 'Lijah!"

"Orli!!!" Elijah yells hugging him "I didn't see you there!" Billy comes into the hallway to see what's going on.

"Who's here? Oh! Hullo!!!" After they finish greeting each other, Billy suggests that they go into the dinning room to sit and talk.

Geneva sits at the table reading her book when everyone enters the dinning room. Orlando grins at her "hullo Genie!"

"Oh God, not you again!" she says sarcastically.

"Aw, you remembered me!"

"Yeah, you're that crazy friend of Elli's! Wanted him to jump off of the Brooklyn Bridge with you with only a bungee cord tied around his legs to keep him safe! Crazy!" Orlando ponders for a moment

"Oh yeah! I remember that!! It was fun! Right 'Lijah?!" Elijah nervously smiles up at him "Umm, yeah…fun…"

Alexandra pulls up a chair next to Dominic and grins up at him. "Hey there Alli, what'cha doing?!"

"Nothing, me and Tiff are just sittin' here!"

"Tiff? Who's that?" She holds up her small doll "Tiffy!" "Can I see?" Dom asks. She hands over the doll; it was dark with maroon eyes and a rather large grin. Her hair was raspberry-pink and braided all around her head, clipped around her face with tiny glass roses. Her outfit was a knee-length pink tunic with sheer sleeves and tassels at the bottom; a small violet scarf tied around her waist for a belt and dark violet puffed pants, closed around her ankles. She also had small butterfly wings sewn into her back and wore tiny pink slippers.

Dominic gives the doll back to Alexandra "she's cute, where'd you get her?" "Umm, I don't 'member." Sean frowns while thinking about it himself, "Come to think of it, I don't remember her getting it either." He says under his breath.

"Maybe one of her friends gave it to her or something." Billy suggests. "Hmm, I don't know. Maybe Christine knows."

"Where is Christine, I thought you were bringing her with you too." Elijah inquires.

"Her aunt is sick; she went to see her in the hospital. She told us to go on ahead, right Alli?" "Yup!" Alexandra answers.

Akiko comes out of the kitchen with dishes and dishes full of food. "You all look so hungry!" she says cheerfully.

"Ooo, and who's this, Billy!" Orlando inquires.

"Oh, this is Akiko; she's staying with us!" Sean greets her and Orlando smiles at her and nods as she goes back into the kitchen for the other plates. "Aw Billy, I'm jealous! None of my girlfriends are that cute!" Billy turns to a tomato red in the face from the remark.

"Well, um, I wouldn't say that, um, she's a girlfriend exactly…"

"You mean she's up for grabs then?!"

"NO!!! I mean, uh, maybe…" Orlando stares at him blankly for a second, and then it hits him.

"Oh, I see. Billy has a bit of a crush then, eh?!" he slyly states.

Billy fidgets in his chair nervously. "Um, well…"

"That's so cute Billy!!!" Orlando cuts him off.

"Leave him alone Orli!" Geneva snaps at him, "If Billy fancies Akiko it's his own business!"

"Gee, thanks Geneva. I'm sure that the rest of the world who didn't know does now!"

"Eh heh heh heh heh heh! Sorry Billy!"

Alexandra looks up at her dad "Are we still going to the park?" Sean looks at Billy, who smiles and nods his head.

"Sure Alli, we can still go to the park. Good thing we brought our jackets though. I didn't know it snowed year-round here." Dominic sighs impatiently "It doesn't, or at least it's not supposed too!"

"Yeah, but it looks like its stopped for the day. It shouldn't be too bad." Billy states. "Good, I don't like snow or rain!" Geneva says indignantly.

Akiko comes back from the kitchen with the last plates and sets them down on the table. She sits next to Billy, smiling at him. "Shouldn't we wait for Maura?" asks Dominic.

"She'll be down soon, I'm sure she won't mind." Says Geneva eyeing breakfast hungrily.

"Ok…" he joins them in filling his plate with pancakes, potatoes, sausage, bacon, eggs and toast.

Maura comes downstairs, toweling her wet hair. She now wears a black satin dress that buttoned up the front with sheer sleeves that had a spider web design, and her black boots. She tosses the towel into the laundry room and sits at the table across from Billy, helping herself to breakfast. "So what are we doing today?" she inquired.

"I believe we're going to the park today." Billy answered. "Want me to make a lunch?" Akiko asks.

"You don't have to." Billy says.

"I want to, I like cooking."

"Ok then, if you want to." Maura scowls at Akiko from across the table, but it fades to a heartbroken stare as Billy helps her to think of things to make for lunch. Only Dominic notices her sorrow.

* * *

They all stand outside trying to decide on whose car to take, and eventually agree on taking Orlando's rental SUV; Dominic decides to take his new motorcycle. "Maura, would you like to ride with me?" Dominic asks her "You would have more room than you would riding with them." She hesitates, not wanting to leave Billy alone with Akiko for any amount of time.

"Aw Dom, that's good of you to be pleasant to Maura!" Billy says.

"Thank you Dom, I think I will." Maura agrees.

Dominic drives quite fast, hugging curves and weaving around any cars on the road. At that rate, they made it to the park in no time at all. He parks near the large snow-covered trees and puts his helmet on the handle. Maura climbs off and saunters over to the trees; he climbs off as well and walks over to her. They stand in silence for some time, watching the swaying trees. Finally, he breaks the still "Maura, how do you feel about Billy?"

"Why do you ask?"

"I've noticed how sad you look whenever Billy is with Akiko." Maura looks up to the trees

"It's not fair. He set me free, so why does he love her so? Does he not see me, standing here in front of his eyes? I would rather have been left alone in that prison than feel so alone in such a crowded house! Is there something wrong with me? Tell me." She begins to cry, and Dominic holds her close.

"There's nothing wrong with you, you're great the way you are."

"Please don't tell Billy, I don't want him to think I'm frail."

"…I won't; I promise."

"Thank you." He wipes her tears and lets go of her; though he didn't want to.

Orlando pulls into a parking space, almost tipping over, and parks. Billy sits in the front seat holding on for dear life. Elijah, Sean and Geneva pile out of backseat hastily and open the back doors for Akiko and Alexandra. Billy stumbles out of the vehicle, looking a tad green; Orlando on the other hand jumps out and runs to Dominic. "Where'd you go?! I tried to keep up but you guys were gone!" "Poor Billy." Dominic says "No wonder he looks green."

Billy walks with Akiko on the tree-covered path around the park, Elijah and Geneva spend time with Sean and Alexandra, Dom sits with Maura near the water in quiet, and Orlando stands on the hill over-looking the large pond. Dark clouds begin to move across the sky at a great speed, when Orlando hears the sound of a beautiful, melancholy tune faintly over the wind. He follows the song until he comes across a lonely-looking woman, also looking down at the water. She was pale, with dark sea-green eyes and dark aqua blue hair, which was wavy and mid-back length. Her features were angular and she was endowed generously; she also seemed to glow faintly. She wore a long white dress with sandals that laced up her leg.

Orlando crept over to her and sat next to her as she sang in her trance. Soon she realized she had an audience and stopped singing, as soon as she did the clouds came to a halt. "Please continue; it's lovely."

"Thank you, it's our song." She said in a calm soothing voice.

"Whose song? You and your lover?" Orlando boldly asked.

"Yes, though I have not seen him in so long I still sing for him."

"Please continue it; I'd like to hear the end." He begged again. She smiled and began to sing in a tongue that was foreign to this plain of life, as she resonated the clouds began to move once again. As she reached the end, it started to snow once again. Orlando looked up to the sky as the icy crystals fell down on him. 'Is this why it's snowing in the middle of summer? Because of her song?'

"What's your name?" He asked after sitting with her for some time.

"Oki."

"Does it snow because of you?"

"Yes, snow is the symbol for love and that is meaning of my song."

"But when I sing it doesn't snow, why does it snow for you?"

"I'm not like you, I came from the water." She brushes her hair behind her long pointed ears. 'Those ears…could she be an elf?' He thought carefully 'A real elf, who makes it snow no less. But who would believe me? I'll have to bring her to them, and then they'll have to believe me!'

"Would you like to join me and my friends for lunch? We have plenty." Orlando asked pleasantly.

"I'd love to." Orlando stands and extends his hand to Oki; he lifts her up and looks up at her. To his surprise she is half of a head taller than him.

"Come on." He coaxes, as she follows him down the hillside.

Billy now helps Akiko set up lunch under a large tree; Elijah bundles up Geneva as the falling snow has now turned her skin a pale green with white stripes. He tucks her now white hair and long narrow ears under his hat so she doesn't call attention to herself, while explaining to Sean how she isn't human. Maura watches Alexandra run through the snow with Tiff hanging onto her pocket for dear life; Dominic helps Elijah explain things to Sean. Orlando and Oki come out of the path that led from the hilltop.

"Hey guys! This is Oki!" He shouts to them while making his approach. Everyone greets her and makes space for them to sit down.

"I like your dress, it's so elegant." Akiko says to her.

"Thank you, it was given to me by the travelers from the far east a long time ago."

"I don't mean to sound rude, but what is an elf from the Shimmering Isles doing this far West?" Maura inquires. Orlando stares at Maura with shock

"How did you know she's an elf?! You didn't even see her ears!"

"You mean you don't know? The way she moves, talks and glows with radiance gives her away." Maura states.

"I was here looking for my lover when I was sealed into stone by a spell. I awoke about a week ago and have stayed here ever since." Oki answered.

"About a week ago, huh? Well that would explain the odd weather we've been having." Billy says.

"Sorry, I'll try not to make it snow anymore."

"Billy, we can't just leave her here! Can't we bring her home? Just until she finds her lost love!" Orlando pleads. Billy hesitates for a moment

"I don't see how I can say no if you're so worried about her." He seemingly agrees.

"Make your registrations now; soon there won't be any vacancies!" Dominic teases. Oki smiles and begins to laugh; as she does, the clouds dissipate away to the usual hazy summer weather.

After finishing lunch, Oki helps Akiko put everything away. Billy strolls around the bay of the lake when Maura appears behind him. "You're too soft Billy, letting a strange girl stay in your house; why should you have to worry about whether she has a place to stay or not?!"

Billy turned to face her "you were once a strange girl with no place to stay too, do you really mean what you say Maura?" Maura stepped back, another woman in the house; she hated the thought.

"Of course not, but why do you care; all you care about is your precious Akiko!" her eyes watered up and she leapt into the air, disappearing halfway; she didn't really intend to sound so cruel.

"Maura…" Billy whispered under his breath as his expression saddened even more. He knew how she felt; he had seen it happen to many other girls, falling hopelessly in love when they hardly knew him. But Maura knew him well, almost as well as he knew himself, and it pained him to see her like that.

Akiko and Oki finished loading their things into Orlando's rental as the breeze picked up to a strong wind, chilled from the snow that still lay about. Elijah helped Geneva into the backseat as Sean climbed in after him, Oki and Akiko sat in the very back with Alexandra while Billy was up front with Orlando. Dominic was seated on his motorcycle and waited for them to leave.

"They're gone now." He said as Maura appeared, coming down from the trees. "How did you know I was there?"

"I knew." He said, strapping on his helmet. "Need a lift?" Dom started the engine and Maura climbed onto the back and held on to him around his chest. Dom blushed under his visor, 'so close yet so far' he thought. They caught up with the others fairly quickly and tailed them the whole way home.

Pilling out of the vehicle, everyone helped bring in the stuff from lunch while Billy opened the door. He put his key into the slot and was surprised to find that it was already unlocked. Billy remembered locking the door and the deadlock before leaving; he cautiously opened the door and peered inside. Empty. He listened for any sound at all; noise was coming from the kitchen. Billy crept down the hallway toward the sound and jumped in to startle the intruder armed with salad tongs. Stunned, thinking he was also an intruder in her brother's house, Margaret pulled a spoon out of the open drawer.

"I know how to use this!! …Billy?! Don't do that!! I could've hurt you!" She stammered on, relieved.

"Oh yes, such a deadly weapon you have there. I should really keep it somewhere safe." Billy teased her. Now realizing she had drawn a spoon instead of her intended knife she started to laugh.

"And I'm sure yours would've wounded me beyond repair!" she said between breaths. Billy looked at his deadly tongs of doom and began to chuckle as well.

"It could be worse; I could've been armed with a paper cup!" They both doubled over in their fun; this was how the rest of the household came upon them.

Billy, Margaret, Elijah, Dominic, Orlando and Sean all sat in the dining room talking. Geneva and Oki made paper dolls with Alexandra, Akiko busied herself cleaning up the kitchen and Maura stood alone near one of the large windows.

"So what are you doing here?" Billy inquired. "I haven't seen you in almost a year; I can't come visit you when you're in town?" The washer buzzes and Akiko goes into the laundry room to change the wash. Billy watches her go by attentively. "She isn't your type Billy." Margaret says over her teacup.

He spins around to her and glares at her "then what is my type?!" His sister turns her gaze over toward Maura standing alone by the window.

"Yeah, but she's kind of rough when she wants to be." Sean says.

"Well built but not for Billy" agrees Orlando.

"Maura? My type? Why? Because she's tall?" Billy queried.

"No, she's just the type you usually bring home. Tall, built, independent; not short, small and caring." Margaret stated plainly, "and why is she wearing your sweater?"

Billy hesitated "um, she doesn't have any clothes with her so I let her borrow some of mine!"

"Well, your clothes are a wee bit too big for her; they're just hanging off of her…or is that what you really look for in a girl?"

"No no! Of course not! What I mean is…"

"That's what I thought. What would Grans say?!"

"Here we go…" sighs Elijah as he Orlando, Sean and Dom leave them at the table.

Maura stares out of the window entranced in thought; she felt as though she were being watched. She glances around the room and no one is staring her way. Outside, a lone dark figure watches the house from above then disappears.

She goes to the outer dimension of darkness and walks down a long corridor to a large throne-like room. Her long black hair hangs to her waist in tight spirals; her eyes are a dead autumn brown. Her ears are long and rounded, freckles scattered over her lightly tan nose; her features are somewhat familiar.

She stands in front of a tall mysterious man sitting in the dark shadows. "Have you found her?" he asked in a smooth deep voice. "Yes my master." She replied contently.

Chapter 5 - One Winged Angel

Late morning to a lazy day with a nice breeze; Billy, Dominic, Elijah, Sean and Orlando lounge about in the living room. Margaret had taken Akiko and Oki into town while Geneva slept in her and Elijah's room. Maura had also gone for the morning; borrowing Dominic's motorcycle earlier, she had been very secretive on where she was going.

Alexandra sits at the dining room table working diligently on her masterpiece, carefully coloring in the oddly shaped figures. Tiff sat propped up on the empty flower vase in the center of the table. "There!" she said putting her crayon aside and holding up the finished product "What do ya think T-ko?" The small doll lay limp a moment more then blinked her maroon eyes and jumped to her feet.

"Oh it's so pretty Alli! …what is it?" Tiff said in her cheerful youthful voice.

Alexandra laughed and pointed out the people "see, that's Mommy, Daddy, Elijah, Geneva, Orli, Billy, me and Dom!"

Tiff looks the paper over hard rubbing her chin "Ah! I see it! You're in the wedding gown and Dom is in the tux…where are Miss Akiko, Miss Maura, Miss Margaret and Miss Oki?"

"I'm not done yet Tiff! I need to put you in too ya know!" She puts her picture back down and looks at it pitifully. "I can color really great but what good is it if not even you can tell who I've drawn?"

Tiff picks up the dull pencil that towered over her and trotted over to the pencil sharpener; after the tip has a new point, she carries it over to Alexandra. "Can I help ya Alli? I can draw ok, and then you can color it in and make it look great!" Alli smiled brightly at the ingenious idea "Alright!" she said grabbing a clean sheet of paper.

Geneva slowly descends the stairwell and curls up next to Elijah on the couch under a fleece blanket. She groggily tries to wake herself up "I thought it would be warm with all the snow gone."

Billy, Dom, Orlando, Sean and Elijah laughed; "Not as warm as you would like it Gen." teased Elijah.

"Yeah, cold weather's not for you eh?" said Dominic.

An expression of confusion crosses Billy's face "If you don't like the cold weather then why did you come to Scotland?"

Geneva smirked tiredly "Wherever my beloved 'Lijah goes I'll follow, even if it's to Antarctica." The room filled with awe's headed toward Elijah, who just blushed slightly.

"It's awfully quiet around, and I haven't heard Maura going after Akiko as usual; where is everyone?" Geneva inquires.

"Margaret took Akiko and Oki into town, and Maura has gone off…somewhere…" says Dominic.

"Come to think of it, it is awfully quiet; I'm going to go check on Alli." Sean says getting up.

"Not too quiet, I have felt a very odd presence clinging around the house these past few days; even now I can sense it" Geneva states.

"Last night, when I was getting some extra blankets from the closet in Dom's room I thought I could feel someone watching me; but it must've been my imagination because I was alone."

Sean strolls down the hallway toward the dining room "Alli, what are you up to sweetie?"

"Uh-oh! Dad's coming!" Tiff stops and drops over to a limp state from where she stands. Sean pokes his head in to find Alexandra sitting at the table coloring her picture from before. "Hi Daddy!" she smiles sweetly.

"Staying out of trouble?"

"Yeah, I'm drawing!"

"Ok, be good." He says turning to go back into the living room.

"…Is he gone?"

"Yeah, he's gone T-ko." Tiff springs back to life and continues to draw her picture for Alexandra.

The front door opens as Margaret, Akiko and Oki return with a few bags in hand. Akiko wears a white flowing dress that buttons up the center with brass buttons and hangs midway past her calf; brown boots and one of Margaret's old jackets. Oki wears an oversized dark blue knit sweater with a pair of khaki trousers and small black boots. They walk to the living room "we're back!" announces Margaret "and there was a great sale that I couldn't pass by! Hope you don't mind I used your credit card Billy!"

"You what?!"

Margaret grins mischievously "then why did they ask for your ID?" Oki inquired. Margaret's grin fades to sly glare "aw, you ruined my fun!"

Akiko spins about letting the white folds whirl free with her long curls "what do you think Billy?"

She stopped and waited for his answer; Billy blushed slightly "I think it suits you beautifully." Maura, who had been standing in the doorway for some time pounds her fist into the wall leaving a small indention.

"Maura, when did you get here?" Dom asks startled.

"A few minutes after Margaret got home." She stated, scowling at Akiko coldly. "I have to go now." Maura quickly makes her way up the stairs and shuts herself in her room.

She stared out her circular window like she tended to do when she felt forlorn. There's a slight knock at the door and it slowly creeks open "are you alright?" Billy asks, a bit concerned "is there something wrong?"

"I felt too crowded, that's all."

"Are you angry?"

"No, I just want to be alone." Maura calmly replied. Shuffling is heard behind them and they turn to find Dominic and Akiko standing in the doorway.

"All right, we'll be downstairs then; come down when feel better." Billy said, going out and closing the door.

Maura goes back to her window 'Billy…you wouldn't understand, would you? You have your Akiko.' Dominic entered her thoughts and a cold shudder ran down her spine as a set of gold eyes pierced into her mind. "So…you've survived all these years as well, Kin."

Downstairs Geneva had also felt the chill and looked from Dominic to Elijah, trying to determine where the feeling was coming from. Her gaze turned to Oki who stared intensely toward Elijah; they exchanged knowing glances. Their expressions changed to pleasant when Alexandra and Akiko came in with lunch. As they sat down Oki noticed Akiko's eyes were fixed to Dominic and Elijah as well. Maura materialized in the air and dropped to the floor gracefully; she sat at her place across from Billy and next to Dom. Lunch was quiet and indolent.

Maura heads to the stairs alone but is stopped by Dominic "where did you disappear to this morning?"

She looks at his sincere face, that wasn't what was troubling him. "I visited a sanctuary in town; it was small but lovely." Dom tried to think of something else to keep the conversation from ending. Maura smiled "I'll be alright Mimmii; just let me be for a bit." He seemed satisfied knowing that she could read him so well and left her to go into the kitchen as she continued her weary climb. 'These stairs are so tiring; but if Kin is lurking about, then I should really keep my strength up.'

In the kitchen Akiko and Billy wash dishes, Elijah and Sean dry while Orlando and Dominic put then away. Elijah drops one of his pots in the rinse water by accident, splashing Sean; Sean in turn goes to splash him back but instead gets Billy and Akiko wet. Billy smiles playfully as Akiko hands him the hose and turns the water on cold; he goes to spray Elijah and Sean, but instead soaks Dom as he was the only one who didn't move out of the path of water. Dripping wet, he starts to laugh full heartedly. It had been a long while since he had such fun.

Orlando puts the last dish away on the top shelf "well, now I think we should go change before we all catch cold together!"

"Yes, grand idea Orli; Best one you've had yet!" teases Elijah as they retreat up the stairs to their rooms.

Dom is turned away from the mirror buttoning up his shirt as a shadowed figure watches on. A scream is heard from his room and everyone rushes in to find a woman coming through Dom's mirror holding him off of the ground in his lifeless state.

She was tall with long limbs, a thin build and golden hair. She turned toward them and smirked with blazing teeth and shining gold eyes "he's mine now Geneva!" She tightly held Dominic close and jumped through the large windows. They fell a few feet then she stopped far above the ground and sped off high into the air. Geneva, Sean, Billy, Elijah and Orlando watched with wide eyes as Akiko and Oki held onto Alexandra. A black blur rushed past them and dove high into the air, pursuing after the intruder.

"It's so far up already, what was that?!!" Elijah stammered out.

"Maura is going after that demon; I'm going with her!" Geneva said, also jumping out of the window and disappearing into the trees. Geneva leapt from branch to branch, soon leaving her human appearance behind. Her long ears listened for Kin while her sharp claws tried to keep up. Maura raced through the air keeping Kin and Dominic in her sights always.

Dominic began to regain consciousness and stir a bit, "poor little Elijah; I'll bet you'll miss your precious girlfriend! But now you're mine!"

She turned Dom to face him "sorry, bad choice on your behalf." Dominic stated boldly.

"Oh well, seems I made a mistake." Kin said letting go of her grip on him and letting him drop to his death. Maura descended and caught Dom a few feet from the ground; she placed him down safely and went after Kin who watched from the air.

"Kin, what are you doing here?" Maura inquired irately.

"I belong here, unlike you!" she replied letting a pale gold veil of light cover her.

"Neither of us belongs here!!" Maura growled, opening her vast ebony wingspan.

"So say you!" Kin flared her eyes at Maura sending the burning light speeding toward her; Maura breaks it apart with the feathered tips of her wings and releasing her shadowed weapon and charging her head on. The two engaged in close combat, nearly always predicting each other's next move. Dom watched from the ground; he had never seen such a thing before in his life. Kin mostly used her own burning energy while Maura handled her massive scythe as if it were an extension of her body.

Finally, Kin found an opening and seized the chance of her full power not yet being restored from having been sealed. She whirled many thin blades of light at her and indeed one of them did hit her; it cost Maura her left wing and half of her immortality. She fell helplessly toward Dominic, Kin prepared to end her rival then and there along with her mistake from before and may have destroyed them both if Geneva hadn't came in with claws and teeth ready. She aimed to cut the demon down the center but Kin moved back in surprise of the ambush and was only wounded deeply in five lines down the right side of her face. Kin cried out painfully and shielded her wounds, trying to regenerate; the strong poison in Geneva's claws prevented any regrowth.

"How...How dare you scar a woman's face!!!" she hissed. Kin knew she couldn't take on a Dryad in her weakened state after the battle with Maura. She disappeared from in front of Geneva's very eyes; but Geneva knew she would return.

On the ground Maura had landed hard leaving a deep till in the earth. She lay on her back dazed as Dom stared down on her; he felt so weak, like there was nothing he could do to save her. Geneva lands from her extended jump and joins Dominic next to Maura's bloodied body. He couldn't bare it any longer, the ache filled his heart and he began to shed tears over her "please don't die Maura! We haven't known each other long enough for it to end now!"

A tall man approached them for the edge of the wood, he was well built and his long burning curled hair hung down past his shoulders. There is an odd presence to him as if he were out of place in this world and time. He stood over Maura a while then picked her up with great care not to hurt her further.

"Wait, where are you taking her?!" Dom asked hastily.

The man looked at him with his dark brown eyes that seemed to search his heart and soul "I am taking her back to where she belongs." He opened his grand white wingspan that shined with a fiery glow in the sunlight and took to the skies.

"Where is he taking her?!!" Dominic demanded once again.

Geneva looked at him confused for a moment "Dominic, I thought you knew…"

"Knew? Knew what?!!"

"Maura, she's one of Kami-Sama's warriors…"

"Yes I know that! What are Kami-Sama's warriors?!!"

"The warriors of God; she's an angel." Dom back steps in disbelief. An angel; he took her for some demon or monster being locked in that cave, but he had been far from right.

Geneva takes Dominic home, and explains the bout between them and Kin. Dominic had gone to his room and locked himself in. With the lights shut off and only his window to light the room; it was now early dusk and the sun had set completely.

"I see, poor Dominic." Billy states "He had grown quite fond of Maura; this must be hard for him."

"We should really try to help him through this as best we can." Says Sean.

"Will she return?" Elijah inquires.

"I don't know she was wounded very badly." Geneva answers.

"All we can do is expect the worse and hope for the best." Akiko sighs.

Chapter 6 - Truth

The sun shines brightly through the large glass-fitted doors and onto the white marble floors; pale ivory columns lined the walls reaching up to the lofty ceiling that swirled around to the center. Details in the windows and marble were in gold; colorful tapestries hung from the edges of the walls and resembled stained-glass windows. A few pieces of furniture were scattered throughout the room; in the center there stood a large bed with sheer light grey fabric draped around the headboard.

The tall man with fiery curly hair approached the bed with another man and looked down on Maura as she slept. The other man was shorter with a thin angular build, deep blue eyes and short sandy blond hair that swept around his face.

"Nikolai, why didn't you stop the demon yourself? All Maura wanted to do was save the mortal."

"Julius, she was the one who had to save the mortal man; even if it did cost her half of her immortality."

"I repaired her as best I could; now we only wait for her treatment to take action and regenerate the lost wing. Do you wish me to erase her memories of earth?"

"No, if she stays I want it to be of her own choice."

"Very well" Julius replies as he leaves the room.

Nikolai sits at the edge of Maura's bedside and brushes her hair away from her face. The wounds from the battle had already healed away and now they waited to see if she would regain consciousness and her lost part. "Maura" he whispered to her, "do you even know whom you love? Or has your own heart been deceived by none other than yourself?" His words drifted into her unconscious mind where the clouded surroundings drifted about her spirit, which sat alone holding her knees.

She lifted her head "what do you mean?"

Nikolai's spirit approached her slowly from the thick moving darkness "why do you feel towards one who does not love you?"

"He released me; I was so alone before Billy let me out. He gave me back my freedom, how can I not love him?"

Nikolai crouched down closer to her "is that the only reason?"

Her eyes became soft and sincere "whether he knows it or not, I have seen everything he has gone through. Billy's a good man, but I don't know why he won't love me the way I want him to; he released me, not her." She cradled her head back into her arms.

"Are you sure?"

She looked up to him "why? What do you know Nikolai?"

He stood up "you know many truths Maura, but would you like to know the whole truth now?"

She cocked her head curiously and arose to her feet to stand next to Nikolai. "Let me first clear your mind of all that you think you know." He held out his hand in front of him and a strong wind came forth and carried the dark mist away; they now stood on a circular platform that seemingly hung in the air. White stone tiles covered the top surface and ended with a golden rim engraved with many rune markings; the bottom was a smooth white stone surface. Below them was a clear blue sky high above everything. "Now let me show you the truth." He said, bringing her mind back to the shrine.

Dominic and Billy come through the heavy door and into her chamber; Billy wanders about the tree as Dominic stands looking up at the tree from the platform that lead from the doorway. Before Billy decides to leave and bid the tree farewell, Dominic notices another scroll attached to the trunk near where he stood. He snatches it off and turns to leave when she slowly realizes that she can move from inside the tree. As Maura awakens from her sleep, Billy and Dominic make their escape.

She awakens back on the platform "Dominic released me…?"

"You never even noticed his growing affection for you, did you Maura? You're the beautiful bird that he had released from its cage."

"He knew it all along, didn't he Nikolai? But why didn't he…"

"He would've told you many times over, but would you have believed him? All these years of watching over you, I have seen you through the worse; but he could've been the one to hold you through those times. Can't you sense the overwhelming desire to be with you that radiates off of him?"

Maura downcast her eyes "I promised them that I wouldn't read their minds, so I blocked all incoming thoughts away. I had no idea that Dominic…"

"Maura, soon you will have to finish something you had started a long time ago and many hardships will be set before you; but if you know who you truly love, you will be victorious."

Maura sat back down and again curled herself up "I will need to think this over." The dark clouds once more appeared and swirled around her. Nikolai sat at her bedside's edge watching her sleep on, as most angels tend to do with those who are sickly.

Dominic still hadn't come out of his room; for days he had locked himself in with the blinds drawn and the lights turned off. Elijah, Billy, Sean and Orlando have become worried about the situation.

"He hasn't eaten in days, I think we should try to talk to him again" says Sean.

"Leave him alone, it won't do any good. He lost someone that he loved dearly; Dominic will come down when he's ready." Geneva states.

"He grew so attached to her, it really is heartbreaking that she's gone now." says Akiko.

"The worst part is that she barely even noticed him" says Billy.

Alexandra listens from the hallway; the thought that Dominic loved Maura so hurt her heart. Tiff sits with her; she knew how fond Alexandra was of Dom.

Dominic sits at the edge of his bed facing the mirror; watching for any movement in the glass. It began to ripple from the middle outward as if it were water; Dom froze as two arms pulled themselves through followed by a head, body and legs. "Oki?! How did you…?"

"Dom, are you going to stay up here until you whither away? Everyone is very concerned about you."

"I didn't mean to worry anyone; I just needed time to myself to think."

Oki smiled "I know you miss Maura, but this won't help anything; everyone is troubling over it."

Dominic thought a moment "I'll be down in a bit."

Downstairs, Oki enters the living room through the hanging mirror on the wall. "Akiko, you should go start dinner; Margaret will be here soon." Akiko looked at Oki puzzled for a moment. "And make a nice sized meal too." She smiles knowingly at Akiko, who disappears into the kitchen perceiving that Oki was up to something.

"Oki, we're not hungry and Margaret doesn't eat that much." Billy says confused.

"But I'm starving!" Dom states from the stairs, bearing a false smile.

"Dom! You're feeling better!" Elijah jumps to his feet and runs to Dom.

"Well if Dom is eating then so am I!" says Orlando.

"We may not be eating anything tonight, there's no food to cook with." Akiko says from the kitchen door.

"What?! But we went grocery shopping just last week!" Billy stammers.

Geneva grins nervously. "Geneva you didn't!" Elijah exclaims.

"It's gone now; you don't have to worry about it! And anyway the food would've all gone bad; we were hardly eating!"

"What did you feed that was so hungry?!"

"It was a unicorn! I swear!" Everyone in the living room now shared the same perplexed expression.

"A what?" inquired Sean.

"Look! It gave a braided lock of hair!" she said announced holding up a long braid of shinning silver hair that she had woven tightly into her own.

"Geneva, it was nice of you to feed the unicorn but did you have to give it all our food?" Akiko inquired.

"He had friends! Sorry; but you know how they look at you with those long sad faces! I was trapped!"

"We should go to town and get something for dinner then. Who's going?" Oki stated, glaring at Geneva.

"I'll go; I have to get the right things." Akiko states.

"I guess I'll go too…" Geneva says moving away from Oki.

"I'll go with you." Billy says.

"I guess it'd be good to get out of the house, I'll go." Dom says. Elijah opens the door; it's cloudy and windy.

"It's going to rain soon, we should hurry." Akiko says.

Orlando peers out the door at the trees rustling violently in the wind "You're not going to walk are you?!"

Akiko finishes buttoning up her coat "no, course not Orli."

"Dom, hang on to Geneva tightly or you'll be thrown off." Elijah warns Dominic.

"It's ok 'Lijah; I've traveled with her before." Billy stands ready in front yard as Geneva lifts Dom onto her back.

"Let's go!" She says taking to the trees leaping from branch to branch; Akiko floats a little off of the ground and speeds after her, grabbing up Billy into her arms as she goes.

Kin resides in the dark dimension that lies between the mortal plain and the dream realm; she floats about in a daze, murmuring to herself in a strange tongue.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're losing your touch. You steal the wrong man, you loose to the angelic warrior whose power isn't even at full aptitude and you just barely escape an encounter from an angry dryad." A smooth voice from the shadows taunts.

"Kurayami, what do you want?!" Kin growls.

"I want to know what you're going to do about this! Or are you too weak to handle the situation at hand?!" Kin's gold eyes flared at Kurayami; she didn't want to think that she was weaker than a lowly forest shadow.

"I'll take care of it."

Kurayami smirked malevolently "good."

Akiko and Billy wait outside of the grocery store patently. Geneva and Dom finally arrive "Well? Shall we?" Billy said as they turned toward the door; Kin stood in front of the entrance glaring at Geneva who returned the stare.

"Billy, Dom, you want to stay out of the way." Geneva stated nearly growling as she rushed toward Kin and they both engaged in intense combat; exchanging blows, dodging and blocking hits. Kin's golden aura engulfed her, glowing intensely, like wild flames. Geneva's claws were now fully extended and her movements were so quick that only blurs of white and green were evident. Billy and Dominic had hidden themselves away in a small alleyway near the store as the two battled on. Excess energy flew in all directions, destroying anything it came in contact with; some of it made its way toward Billy and Dom but Akiko stopped it and held a barrier around them.

"If they keep on like this they'll level the town!" Billy cried over the roar of their vigor.

"Do something Akiko! We have to help Geneva!" Dom shouted.

"The only thing I can do is keep you two safe so she won't have to worry about it!" She declared holding strong.

Geneva suddenly leapt high into the air and disappeared from view, Kin's aura faded a little as she watched for her descent. The surroundings became very still but Akiko kept the protective bubble up. Kin searched all around her and couldn't pick up any signs of Geneva; again looking upward she saw her crashing down onto her with her huge claws glowing with trails of silver fury. Geneva cut her through; right down the middle and the silver magic she had concentrated into her claws crumbled her remains to nothing more than golden dust that scattered into the wind.

Geneva lands and again resumes her guise of human appearance; Akiko releases the barrier and nearly falls, Billy catches her and holds her gently.

"Is she gone now?!" Dominic asks frightfully.

"Yes, I think her spirit is going back to the dream realm now." Geneva said.

"What's the dream realm?" Billy inquires, still holding the weakened faerie in his arms.

"This is the physical plain; beyond here there are other worlds. The dream realm is where magic and desires gather; many of the beings from this plain moved there a long time ago."

"Akiko, you should rest a bit before we have to go home. Stay out here with Billy, while Geneva and I get some things for dinner." Dom says going into the store with Geneva.

"I hope Maura comes back, we'll need her." Akiko says under her breath.

Kurayami watches on through the dark pond; she smiles at Akiko "very soon, we will be together again. Then you'll love only me."

Chapter 7 - For A Man's Desire

In shadowed surroundings of a dark throne room Kurayami cradles her head in her arms, resting on a mysterious man's lap. His black hair is waist-length and tied back loosely, his eyes were gold and his face was stern; his skin tone had little color to it for it had been hundreds of years since he had seen the sun. His attire was of darkened robes and a long cloak that seemed to fade into the background like his other dark features. An angel who had fallen from grace but had walked away from the fires of hell, he now resided in the pocket between dreams and reality.

He ran his fingers through her hair "did you eliminate our small problem?"

"Maura is strong-willed, she will not stay out for long; Kin was a fool and did not take the dryad into account. Trying to take that hume angered her beyond Kin's comprehension, she may as well had kissed death."

"Maura is gone for now, but I don't want any tribulations when I put my plans into action. Make sure that small alliance doesn't become a problem."

She smiled wickedly "I'll make sure of it."

Kurayami made her way down the long corridor and into a large, well adorned room "Arman, I need you." A tall, well built man slipped down from his high perch to her; his hair was sandy blond, his eyes were a deep blue and his features were very handsome.

He put his strong arms around her boldly "I knew you did; you were always toying with my heart with your rejections!"

She overcame the urge to shred him apart and softly cooed into his ear "I have a problem, the master will be very angry with me if certain mortals aren't taken care of. Can you, maybe, help me Arman? I mean you're so strong…"

Arman's head was filled with fancies of what a grateful woman would do for him "alright my pet, what would you have me do?"

Billy sits in an office in town talking with a tall man with dark hair while Akiko sits patiently in the waiting room. The door to the office opens and the two men finally emerge "Well thank you for stopping by Billy."

"I had some spare time this morning and decided to see how things were going."

He looks at Akiko who approaches him "Ah, Stu, this is Akiko." Billy says smiling fully. Stu holds his hand out to her and she stares at it curiously.

"You're supposed to shake his hand." Billy whispers to her.

She gently latches onto his hand and shakes it "hello."

Stu grins madly "Aw Billy! She's charming; just like you said!" Billy blushes and his eyes grow wide with embarrassment.

She smiles "you're too kind; and Billy's too good to me!"

"And we should be going!" Billy says, taking Akiko back from Stu. They bid Stu goodbye and start for home, walking because of Akiko's weakened state.

"I didn't know Dom could cook so well, maybe he should cook more often." Akiko teased Billy.

"Oh, aye; he does like to cook, but it's different from your style." He paused a moment "I didn't realize Geneva was so strong, but yesterday you seemed to have known all along."

"She's a dryad, very strong; but I've never seen one as powerful as her before. I knew dryads were physically well-built and had the influence of enchantment, but she used silver magic and I don't know how she can do that. Only wizard's and dream beings can use silver magic, it's very old and weak compared to the mages power; but they're not around anymore."

Billy thought a moment; Elijah knows more than he is letting on, but he won't tell anything. "What about you, Akiko? Tell me about you."

She stopped and looked a bit saddened "I was once a mortal too; except, I lived with ancients. They came here from a dying realm; and they were very wise. I never knew my family, they had gone to the mage war and left me with them when I was still an infant; they didn't return. When it came time for the ancients to leave they wanted to leave a part of themselves behind in this world, so they purified my soul and filled me with their strength and lore; that's how I became ageless. Over time the humes placed me with the faeries in their minds; I was no longer a mortal, and I had no race so I adopted the name for myself. When the other beings were sealed I was put to sleep as well, because they thought I was one of the faeries."

Billy walked with her on the trail as she talked "while I slept I felt the world passing me by and heard the wishes and dreams of everyone, but then one day something happened; I was able to move. The seal had been broken and I was free; a few days later I found you." She smiled up at him "it was the best day of my life."

He smiled, it was the first time she had really opened up to him and had been honest; he never asked before, afraid that she was like Oki searching out a lost lover. Billy took her hand into his "I'm glad you feel the same way."

Arman strode up the trail murmuring to himself, he had guised himself in a navy suit, pale yellow shirt and a large pair of dark sunglasses. He was heading toward town to seek out the mortals Kurayami sent him for. He passes by Billy and Akiko as they precede home and stops to watch them after they had gone by. Akiko peers over her shoulder at him then returns her attention to Billy; Arman was entranced by her dark gentle eyes and endearing face. He had always been very fond of women, but there was something about her that drew him to her; something familiar.

Alexandra ran about the house playing hide and seek with Tiff, although it made everyone wonder how she got so much fun out of it. Oki sits at the kitchen table with Orlando and Sean, moving ribbons of water through their fingers and around their hands then back into the cup. Elijah, who is not feeling his best, lies on the couch, resting his head on Geneva's lap while he plays a game. Dominic sits in the large chair in the living room staring out the window. Billy and Akiko arrive in the door with many greetings.

Billy looks about the house "I thought Margaret was staying for a little while?"

"I am" says a voice for the stairwell. Billy looks over to find Margaret standing at the top of the stairs in a loose fitting shirt and a pair of worn in jeans. "Trying to get rid of me already?" she says, descending the stairs slowly.

Billy rolls his eyes at the remark "it's such a nice day, a shame summer's coming to an end so soon!"

Elijah lets his controller drop from his hand "damn, Sephiroth killed me again. I'm so bored being stuck on this couch!"

Geneva combs her fingers through his tousled hair "well, if ya didn't stand outside in the cold wind last night waiting for us ya wouldn't have caught a chill now would ya?" Elijah groaned in protest to her scolding, but he knew she was right. Akiko smiles tiredly at them as she keeps her balance by holding onto the banister.

"Aw, Akiko; you look so tired." Margaret says.

"I think she used too much energy yesterday." Billy says. Margaret smirks at Billy, his soft smile droops to a glare toward his sister.

"C'mon Akiko, you need to rest to regain your strength." Billy said, helping her up the stairs.

Billy pulls the thick covers over top of her as she stares softly at him. He begins to walk toward the doorway.

"Where are you going?"

He stops and turns to face her "downstairs, why?"

"Don't leave me yet." she pleaded tenderly.

He smiled gently and sat at the corner of the bed removing his shoes then lay next to her atop the covers. He held her small hand in his, lovingly stroked the top with his thumb. She sighed a breath of relief and curled up next to him, burring her face in the slope of his neck. He wrapped his arms around her and slowly began to drift asleep himself.

Finding himself in a dark misty plain, Billy looked about frenetically for any sign of life. He glimpsed a pale white glow approaching him from the shadows; Akiko stepped out from the haze.

"Where are we?!" He demanded.

"This is the subconscious level, I brought you here to show you this vision I've been perceiving."

"Why is it so dark here?"

"This is the future of your world if events go unchanged. It will be engulfed in darkness and lost along with all life it holds."

Billy stepped back in dismay "Is there no way to change this?!"

She looked up at him sadly "I don't know. I have only seen what you see now. This place was once clear and bright, the dreams of people were visible. But now it's dark and hard to see anything at all."

"Why tell me; what good will it do?!"

Akiko reached up and held his face carefully "because you sought to know what was troubling me. I feel your presence in this realm strongest of all; I hear your deepest and most heart-filled thoughts. It rang throughout your mind again and again, so I wanted to show you." She released him and he was pulled away from where they stood, reaching for her all the way.

Billy opened his eyes in his own room in his own house, still holding Akiko as she slept. He moved her hair out of her face 'I didn't know that you held such burdens on your frail wings.'

Dominic stood in the hallway just outside of Billy's bedroom. He knocked gently on the door to see if he was sleeping; Billy turned slowly and gestured Dom inside with a nod.

Dominic leaned on the windowsill facing him. "Is she alright?" he whispered.

"Just fatigue, she'll be fine." He said running his fingers through her long soft curls. "I think we have something else to worry about though. Akiko's been seeing visions of the world's end. She's worried that it will be soon."

"What can we do?"

"I'm not sure; maybe Oki or Geneva will know something."

Dominic stood up "Maura might have known."

"She might have, but she's not here right now." Dom's expression deeply saddened to Billy's words. "Dom, Maura may come back yet. We all miss her, you're not alone."

Dom seemed to be at ease for the moment "yeah. Hungry? I made lunch."

"I'll be there in a minute."

Dominic left the room and went back down the stairs. Billy kissed Akiko's forehead then moved off of the bed, careful not to disturb her, and crept down the stairs.

As Akiko slumbered a shadowed figure watch intently from the window; Arman had followed them home and was deciding how to seduce her when she awoke. He watched her while she slept, silently entering the room through the glass in the window. He found a corner in the room with a slight shadow and blended himself into the faded darkness.

Akiko stirred a bit then awoke with a start breathing heavily. She sat up in bed holding her temple; there was a great pain in the back of her mind.

"Ah, the sleeping beauty finally awakens." Arman purrs from his hiding place; only his blue eyes were detectable.

Akiko gasps in alarm and clutches the blankets pulling them to her "who's there?!"

Arman stepped from the shadowed corner and walked toward her. "Come now, no need to be shy." He said, reaching for her trembling hands.

"No! Stay away! You're one of them, aren't you?!!" She screamed, jumping out of bed and dashing toward the door only to be cut off.

Arman smirked intently down at her and grabbed a tight hold of her wrist. "One of whom? Did someone tell you of our coming? Or maybe you foresaw it, just like the end." Akiko struggled to free herself from his tight hold, but he just stood unfazed to her hits and pulls. He seized her other wrist and held her up to his eye level. "Silly little girl, do you think you can stop it?! You can't even save yourself!"

The door swings open as Billy and Geneva burst in and charge toward Arman. Arman holds both Akiko's wrists with one hand and summons a strong gust of wind to his aid with the other, knocking Billy and Geneva back against the wall. "I am no mere manifestation! I am more powerful and intelligent than that fool! And I am taking this girl!"

Oki loomed in the doorway, glowing intensely with an angry blue aura. She scowled at Arman who still held the waiflike Akiko in the air; he in turn arrogantly sneered at her. Oki's aura inflamed and she forced him out with a surge of power energy. Akiko fell limp to the floor and Billy rushed to her without delay; Arman spun through the air, dazed from the expulsion.

Oki wasted no time; she began to create a barrier around the house. Glowing blue outlines of curved shapes, circles and runes came up from the ground and through the floor as she constructed the forceful barricade of spirit energy.

Arman sped back toward the house and stopped in front of the pale blue wall of haze around the perimeter of the house. He lowered his eyes fiercely at Oki and then to Billy, who held the frightened Akiko in his arms. Then Arman disappeared into the pocket from which he came.

Oki held onto the door frame to keep for losing her balance, breathing roughly and sweating slightly. "I can't keep this barrier up for long…and he knows that. He'll wait until it either weakens or falls completely, then come again."

Geneva picked herself up "he's too strong for us at this state. I'm still weak from that fight with Kin, and Akiko exerted too much strength as it is. We need help."

Sean stood in the hallway behind Oki holding Alexandra "where can we find that kind of help?"

Chapter 8 - Dragon in the Night

Arman makes his way down the dark corridor, talking to himself angrily the whole way. He goes into an open doorway the lets out into a great room full of gold and other assorted treasures piled up high into mountains. Heavy course breathing rumbles throughout the room, and then stops as Arman approaches the sleeping dragon. It growls groggily at him, opening its large black empty eyes. Shinning red scales covered the body of the massive dragon, only its wild russet hair trailing down its neck in a mane-like fashion.

Arman bowed to it respectfully as though he had been introduced to a beautiful woman at a social event. "My dear Ryu, I have come to a bit of a standstill in a mission; I was hoping we could help each other out."

The dragon growled in a loving tone and nudged against Arman with her nose. He stroked her snout carefully "I knew you still loved me. Go as the lovely warrior you are and kill all of them, except for the faerie. Bring her to me."

Arman exited the room to the hall again, chuckling to himself as he walked.

"What's so humorous, Arman? You haven't accomplished anything yet." Kurayami said a bit irritated for his entranceway.

Arman smirked, pushing her up against the door. "I have played your games for long enough Kurayami. Now I'll play by my rules! Soon that insignificant alliance will be no more and that faerie will me mine!"

"Faerie? Akiko?! Leave her alone! She's mine! Do you hear me, mine!" Kurayami raged at him.

Arman laughed in a dark tone "So, that's why you dislike me so!"

She glared up at him "I will deal with Akiko; you just stay out of it. I don't need you Arman." She turned to walk away.

"Yes you can deal with her all you want, after I have my fun with her that is…" Arman said after her.

Kurayami gripped her fury into her fist. 'I will make sure you pay for this Arman.'

Arman goes into his room to find Seppen lying on the bed. Seppen was thin with short white spiked hair with frozen icy blue ends. He was small and thin with a pale blue tint to his light skin that seemed to glitter like ice. His eyes were a very cold blue and his features seemed somewhat young.

"What do you want with another woman master?" He asked confused.

"Seppen, you'll understand one day when you fall in love." Arman sighed.

"But I love you, is that not the same thing?" Seppen asked cocking his head to the side.

"No Seppen, I don't think so."

"As you wish, master."

Geneva watches the sun begin to set over the distant hilltops. "It will be dark soon, will the barrier hold through the night?"

Oki sat at the dinning room table with Orlando trying not to move too much. "I don't think so, holding the spirit energy over such a large area is exhausting. We need to decide what we're to do."

Sean thought hard "maybe we could retreat to the woods?"

"No, they'd sense us and track us down." Akiko said.

"Is there no escape?" Billy asks fretfully.

"We could stay and fight, but they're so strong…" Dom said.

Margaret sits on the couch holding Alexandra "how could you not tell me this!"

"How could I! You'd be the first to have me committed!" Billy protested.

"Alright, fight later; we have a bit of a crisis here!" Orlando stated.

"There's a tribe of south eastern dryads nearby, I could ask them for assistance." Geneva says.

"No Geneva, you don't know if they're hostile or not!" Elijah begs.

"It doesn't matter, I still have to try."

Elijah bites his lip trying to think of another way around it. "Then I'm going with you!"

"No you're not! You're human; they'll either feed you to their mother tree or eat you themselves!"

"I don't care, I'm going" he said stubbornly.

Geneva thought a moment "fine, let's go; we're wasting time."

Elijah stared at her with wide eyes. "Well, you said you wanted to go; let's go!" she insisted.

Geneva and Elijah went outside to the edge of the haze wall; it rippled then opened a tiny opening for them to jump through. They departed into the trees going seemingly faster and faster through the branches.

"I hope they come back soon." Sean said.

"I hope the dryads will help us." Orlando said.

Geneva and Elijah make it to a large clearing deep in the forest; they land in the center and stand looking all around. Geneva growls loudly in a low tone that echo's throughout the trees. They wait a moment longer to hear a responding hum-like growl followed by the opening of many dimly glowing eyes in the trees around them. Elijah stepped behind Geneva, hiding from the thousands of piercing eyes that filled the woods. Geneva again began to make the inhuman growls and the dryads cascaded down from their trees and surrounded her and Elijah, snarling fiercely.

Geneva stayed close to Elijah "they are angry, and they wish to do us harm."

"Why; what did we do to them?!"

"Many dryads were sealed in their trees; when the men came and cut the trees down both the tree and the dryad died. It seems they think I sided with men because I stand here protecting you. We will find no aid here."

"Can we escape?" Elijah whispered.

"I don't think we can out run them, and I don't want to fight my way out; I share their hurt."

"Then what do we do?"

"I don't know."

The dryads begin to move in closer to them, baring teeth and large black claws. Their skin differed from Geneva's, it was a dark brown and covered in black wood ring patterns; it was also tough. Their hair was black and unkempt, and their eyes were either brown or black.

They hissed angrily while others of the growled in a strange tongue at them. "Kill them now, kill them now. It's all the same; eye for an eye, life for a life." Geneva translated under her breath. Her ears perked at a new sound over all the threats; something big was coming through the woods. No, more than one; there were two and they were huge.

It only took one of the brown dryads to stop growling and look toward the woods for them all to realize something big was approaching. They all screeched in terror and ascended their trees as two enormous wolves leaped out from the forest. They were at least three or four times bigger than any regular wolf from the mountains and seemed to have an obscure glow to them. The larger of the two was pure white with blue eyes, and the other had a shining black coat with grey eyes.

"Stand very still Elijah…and don't look them directly in the eyes…" Geneva warned, standing still herself. Elijah looked down at the tall untouched grass and tried to keep his breathing quiet.

The wolves circled around them slowly, eyeing them suspiciously. "These aren't what we're looking for" said the larger in a raspy woman's voice over growls.

The black one smelled them carefully. "Then why do they smell like her?" He growled back in a deep, rumbling voice.

"Good question" the other snarled, stopping in front of Geneva who stared downward with her head bowed.

"Please, we just came to find some help." Geneva said hesitantly.

"Silence dryad!" The white wolf growled "All dryads know are lies and tricks to fool men to their deaths!" Geneva jumped at the sudden fury and silenced herself.

The black wolf locked his eyes on Elijah "I would trust this sheep herder who probably kills wolves before you."

"I am no Shepherd." Elijah said, trying to keep calm.

"Oh, one so thin doesn't watch his father's flock at the day? Then what are you, a squire? Or maybe a warrior?" The white one inquires as they both laugh at the idea of Elijah being a highland warrior.

"No, no; I'm an actor."

"A what? I think you've been in the woods too long, I've never heard of those." The black one rumbled.

"I recite parts in a story; so that others can hear the tale." Elijah explained.

"Actor, huh? So that's what bards are calling themselves now, eh?" The black wolf rumbled.

The white wolf notices the strands of silver hair woven in a tight rope with her white hair. "You took hair from a unicorn?!"

"It was a gift; the unicorn was hungry and I came to its aid." Geneva said quietly.

"If it were stolen, it would've turned black and her hair would've fallen out." The black wolf whispered to the white one

"If you were given hair from a unicorn, then you must've done something they were grateful for. You may take your leave and return home." The white wolf said, turning away. "But be warned, not even the silver magic of that hair can save you from what lurks in these old woods."

Both wolves disappear into the trees without a trace. "Elijah, we should go back." Geneva said in a disappointed tone.

"Is there no hope for us Geneva?"

She looked at him sternly "we can at least try to run; there's no shame in outrunning your enemy!" She lifts Elijah onto her back and heads home over the tops of the tall trees.

"What were those wolves Geneva?" Elijah asks as they leapt high into the air.

"They were once thought of as ancient gods by men, but we knew better; they're the guardians of these woods. They are immortal and have great power, but they can also die or become demons."

"How would they become demons?"

"If they let themselves be taken by darkness, then they will lose their greatness and become only a shadow of their former radiance." She speeds up and dodges all over "damn it."

"What is it?"

"We're being followed."

They returned to the house to find a tall, powerfully built woman tearing attacking the fading barrier at full force. Her dark wild hair whirled about her as she prepared to ram it again. She flew at it and slammed into it, shaking the ground around them.

"What is it?!" Elijah asked, trying to see it from the ground.

"It's a dragon!"

"Kinda small to be a dragon, isn't it?"

Geneva looked at Elijah with a confused expression "she's in her human form. Dragons can change their form, I thought everyone knew that; anyway, can't you smell it?!"

Ryu charged the blue haze feverishly, each blow going straight to Oki.

"I can't stop a dragon, even if she is in a weaker form!" Geneva said.

Ryu notices the two watching on and grins intently as she charges down to them. A shadowed figure leaps from the trees and onto Ryu, pulling out her sword and sending the dragon to a quick end; the decapitated body fell into the woods.

Landing in front of Geneva and Elijah the figure turns to face them; a taller woman with deep violet eyes under her long black hair, shorter and spiked at the top. She pointed her sword at Geneva who was already in a fierce position with her teeth and claws exposed.

"I've been looking for you for a very long time; we have yet to finish our battle." The woman said in a calm, monotone voice with a slight oriental accent.

"I'll kill you right now!" Geneva growled.

"Geneva, you need to rest! You've been running all over the forest tonight!" Elijah intervened.

"Your slave boy is right, I won't fight you until you're at full strength; but I won't leave either, you won't escape me again!"

"He's not my slave Celest!"

Celest smirked "of course not; he's just yours, right?"

The barrier finally fell and Oki was unconscious from loss of energy. "Great, now we're open to anything that guy sends at us!" Elijah groans.

"Oh no, nobody will kill you before I can! I'll take care of that problem." Celest states, looking directly at Geneva.

They go into the house, Geneva lies on the floor by the fireplace and rests for a bit; Orlando moved Oki to the couch and watches her as she sleeps.

"What happened?! What was that thing?!" Sean inquires anxiously.

"It's gone now, she got ride of her." Elijah says, pointing to Celest.

"I'll start now if you don't mind." Celest says, leaving the room.

"What is she doing?" Billy asks.

"She's putting something up to keep us safe. It's ok, she wants to kill Geneva!" Elijah says. He looks at everyone's confused faces and thinks about what he just said. "No, I mean she wants to keep us safe so that she can end the battle between her and Geneva when they're both at full strength!"

The room fills with sounds of acknowledgement; though everyone wasn't sure they liked the idea of a woman staying who only wanted to kill one of them.

Julius and Nikolai walk through the beautiful halls of the infirmary toward Maura's room.

"I gave her the elixir of the sacred water to help the healing procedure improve." Julius says as they enter the room; empty. "This can't be right, nurse! Did you move Maura to another room?"

A woman in white appears "no, the room was empty when I found it this morning; the sheets were even cold. I thought maybe you released her the day before and forgot to tell me to turn out the room."

Julius looks toward Nikolai for his reaction. He stands by the open window and stares out at the clouds. "Maura, you're going back to him aren't you."

Chapter 9 - Bloody Wings of Fate

Angry and tired Arman senses Ryu's defeat "Seppen, I will be back soon. Stay out of trouble while I am gone." He storms out of the room and disappears down the darkened hall.

Seppen chuckles to himself "that's just like you Arman; to only be satisfied when you get what you want."

As Arman treads irately through the corridor, Kurayami peers out of her cracked door to watch him pass. She then returns inside, a large shadowed lake with black water in which an enormous tree grew out of with twisted roots and large hanging branches. She bound across the water and quickly skimmed up the trunk to a heavily enclosed branch. Inside she returned to her small round lantern that gave off a brilliant white light. She watched it profoundly, making sure it's radiance didn't dim at all. "Soon, very soon now…" Kurayami smiled malevolently.

Dominic awakens to find a strangely familiar scroll of paper on his door. He tears it off and proceeds downstairs; he notices the long pieces of paper on all the doors to the bedrooms. Downstairs Akiko and Billy clear the dishes from breakfast; and Sean talks to Christine on the phone while Elijah lies next to a sleeping Geneva on the rug in front of the cold fireplace. Celest, Margaret and Alexandra sit on the couch watching the news; Orlando sits over Oki as she sleeps on the loveseat by the window.

"What are these?" Dom asks holding up the small piece of paper.

"Those are the scrolls Celest put up to protect us." Margaret replies with out looking in his direction.

"You might want to put that back Dom" Elijah says quietly from the floor.

He looks at the paper then shrugs and goes back up the stairs. 'These look just like the little scrolls that were in Maura's cave.'

Oki stirs in her sleep with visions of the ocean and the poignant song of her people. She opens her eyes to see a clouded figure above her; kind face, soft aqua-green eyes and straight fair hair that traveled mid-way down his back. Her eyes grew wide 'Aban…' she thought. She flew up to meet him only to find that it wasn't real; Orlando had been the one looking down on her.

"Lay down, you're still not well." He said, gently moving her toward the pillow where she once was.

Her eyes became filled with tears, but she did not shed a drop; instead she lay back down and tried to drift back asleep. Billy and Akiko came back into the living room with Sean.

"Hey sweetie, guess what?" Sean says.

Alexandra looks up at him and tilts her head to the side "what is it Daddy?"

"Mommy's coming over soon; Aunt Wendy's doing much better!"

Her eyes light up "really?! Yay!"

Billy looks toward Akiko and smiles, but she returns with a saddened vacant expression. "Billy…"

"I think you guys should hear this." Margaret says turning up the television.

"…there have been a multitude of sightings of what appear to be monsters and other mythical creatures worldwide. Authorities have said nothing dos far pertaining to these sightings or to the disappearance of thousands of statues, rock faces or the moving of forest lines. In other news, scientists say that the tide is rising unquestionably in distance and speed; the ocean seems to be in a sort of rage…" Margaret turns down the television.

"Something's going on, what's happening to the world?" she asks.

"Why is the weather changing so?" Orlando inquires.

"The water has awakened; they are calling back any that have been left behind." Celest says.

"Awakened? How?" Billy asks.

"The sirens of the ocean, but they were to sleep at the bottom of the depths. They are calling the lost elves to them; to take them back to the Shimmering Isles, the passage between their world and ours." Akiko says.

"I guess they don't know that the gateway was destroyed a long time ago, they think they're going home." Celest grimly says from behind her teacup.

Oki listens from under the window 'Aban…have you already left this world?'

Arman moves toward at full speed, his wings fully extended. Wings that were once white with a resplendent glow were now faded and smeared with the blood of countless victims to his merciless carnage. In his strong hands he holds a large bloodstained sword the color of gold, crafted by the heavens.

He stops at the border of the forest and looks over at one of the trees closest to him; a scroll. They were on the trees that circled around the yard of the house; he would have to destroy them to get any closer to the house.

Arman chuckled to himself "easy." He goes to grab the paper only to be shocked. Angry, he begins to hack away at the tree with his sword; but it was in vain, the tree was also protected by the scroll's power.

Arman stops and leans on his sword, setting it in the ground. He inspects the tree, and then begins to laugh malevolently; holding his hand out he produces a flare of energy and burns the scroll to ashes, dropping the shield around the house.

Celest puts her teacup down and looks toward the woods. "He's here…" she says as the house violently shakes. Billy catches Akiko and everyone is aware that Arman has returned. The house trembles under Arman's pounding; the front door is also ornamented with a small scroll.

"I'm getting tired of these little pieces of paper!!!" He bellows, summoning a multitude of flares.

The door creaks under the pressure of the fire as the small paper burns away. The door flies open and Arman steps in, immediately setting his attention to Billy as he holds Akiko. Dominic hurries down the stairs just as Arman raises his sword over his head, intending to bring it down on Billy.

"Billy!!! No!!!" Dominic screams as he stands frozen from the stairwell.

Arman stops and droops over, losing his sword; a blade had pierced through him from the back and now moved slowly out of him. His eyes were dilated and filled with pain. "A…ki…ko…" he whispers under his heavy breathing, he goes to fall but disappears before he reaches the ground.

Billy still held Akiko tightly, from the stairs Dom was over come with joy and relief. Akiko looked up to see who had saved them; and there stood Maura with her wingspan of white and black, holding her bloodied glaive in her hands.

Chapter 10 - In your absence we kept you dear

Arman appears in his room, bleeding immensely; Seppen runs to him, catching him in his arms. "Master?! What happened to you?!" he cried.

"Seppen…help me…" he heaved, holding his wound.

Seppen held him close as Arman drifted out of conscience "don't worry; I'll take care of you."

Akiko stares up to Maura's height from the floor. "Maura…?" she said, still trying to believe it herself.

Billy's head shot around with wide eyes "Maura! It really is you!"

Dominic slowly descended the stairs; she turned her to the sound of his footsteps. He stood in front of her, containing himself from throwing his arms around her. She also contained much emotion within her; she didn't know how to feel.

"I…that is to say, we have missed you in your absence." Dominic finally said.

Maura looked about the room, everyone just stood looking at her like they all wanted to run to her and tell her how much they've missed her. "…thank you." She said quietly. "I've missed all of you as well. I…I need to rest."

"Your room is still vacant." Billy said.

"I'll help you." Dominic offered.

"You don't have to Mimmii." Maura said, climbing the stairs.

"I want to." He replied, following her.

Upstairs Maura found her room just as she had left it; she paused in the center staring out her window.

"I guess I'll go now…" Dom said, turning to leave.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Dominic stops in the doorway and hesitates "so, you know. Do they know everything in Heaven?"

She turns to face him "their favorite pastime is watching the mortals in their affairs."

"Watch us? Why?"

"Humes are just so…interesting…" she somewhat smiled at him.

"Was it hard to find your way back?"

"I had to pass through through the distant dimensions that haven't been traveled since ancient times. It was very dark, but there was this gleaming light that shinned always; it lead me back to this plain."

Dom's face became very sincere "Maura, could you ever love me?"

Her expression changed to a distant stare "you; only you? I don't know; I still love Billy, even if he doesn't care for me in the same way. It's hard to just stop loving someone."

Dominic looked as though he would cry for a moment, then smiled "of course Maura; I understand. …I should be going now…" He walked out and closed the door behind him. In the hall, he wiped away the falling tears with his sleeve.

"I'm sorry, Dom." She whispered after him.

Downstairs everyone sat around the kitchen table waiting for Dominic to return. "Do you think he's gone now?" Sean inquired.

"I thought that angels could only be killed if their wings were severed off, but Maura has grown a new one…I don't know…" Akiko trailed off.

"She speared him right through, from the center of his wings and right into his heart." Elijah said.

"Maybe it hurt him enough not to come back." Orlando said.

"No, to make them vulnerable their wings have to be completely off." Geneva added.

"Removing the wings of an angel only makes them mortal, not completely weak; they can still die. Even with their wings." Oki explained.

Celest sipped her tea "But he was cursed, most likely rejected from heaven; so he may have lost his radiance."

"How do you know that?" Billy asked.

"He couldn't pass through my barriers, but Maura could. If your heart is dark then you can't pass through, and if that's the case then he probably didn't come from heaven."

Dominic came down the stairs slowly, trying not to look heartbroken. "There he is" Margaret said.

"She's going to rest for a bit, she had traveled a long way through a great deal of darkness to get here." Dom said to them.

"How did she find her way to us?" Orlando asked.

"She said there was a bright light in the distance that she followed; I guess she meant a star or something."

"There are no stars in the darkness of the outer regions, only darkness and mist." Celest said.

"Then someone must have been guiding her to us; but who?" Akiko pondered out loud.

Seppen stands over Arman watching him sleep; he is in one of the many giant roots protruding from the darkened ground. A woman with icy-blue tinted white hair and lightly blue tinted shimmering skin approaches him from behind and wraps her arms around him lovingly.

"Hello my love" she purred into his ear, staring at him with cold grey eyes.

He pushes her away "stop it Kori, I'm watching my master's life waves."

"Oh Seppen, don't you want my love?!!" Kori hissed furiously.

Seppen's eyes didn't stir away from Arman "go away, I'm busy now."

Kori's freezing glare turned into a playful smile as she latched onto his arm "come on Seppen, you and I are the last of our kind; don't you want to even try and save our race?"

He again pushes her away "go!"

She scowled at him "fine, keep your Arman!" Then she turned and went off angrily out of the room.

In the darkness she stood on tangled giant roots and watched the mist that gathered under the gargantuan black tree; the top was hidden in the thick haze. "Why are you out here Kori, you know it's not safe" a voice inquired from the shadowed door behind her.

"Seppen doesn't care for me; he only wishes to stay by Arman's side."

Kurayami stepped out "Arman has returned? Did he destroy the alliance?"

Kori laughed "no, far from it. He returned with his heart pierced by a holy blade; Seppen put him in one of the roots to keep him alive."

Kurayami stared into Kori's eyes "you do realize that as long as Arman is alive Seppen will see no one else in his heart."

Kori looked back with freezing eyes of ice "don't you think I know that?!"

They stood in silence for a moment as the trunk rumbled slightly. "Why is the master growing this tree Kurayami?"

"This is only part of his tree, but Master Liam said that it was important to nurture this section of it."

"It's part of his plan, isn't it? His plan to engulf the humes into darkness."

"I'm not sure; Liam has plans for everyone it seems…" Kurayami turned and disappeared down the hall inside the tree and returned to her room.

Inside her secluded branch she has an assortment of hundreds of tiny candles lit; hundreds unlit. She goes to a small shelf in which there is a row of five candles, two of them are burning. She places the old lantern from before on a hook hanging from the side of one of the branches. "And so it starts, the beginning of the end; but where will you end up Akiko? On the earth, fading with your precious man; or with me, where you belong? We'll find out soon, I promise."

Maura comes down the stairs stretching and everyone in the living room gives their attention to her. "Are you feeling better now?" Billy asked.

She smiled "aye, I am. Thank you."

"So, what news do we hear from up above?" Sean inquired.

"I noticed an overwhelming power growth in a small pocket close to this plain; if it continues to develop at the rate it's increasing, it may detonate, taking this system with it."

Oki looked at her confused "but I have sensed nothing! If there was so much of this energy nearby, wouldn't we have sensed it?!"

"That's the odd part, when you look at it from outside the pocket it's almost undetectable. But inside, it's enormous." Maura said.

Geneva looked out at the sun growing low in the sky "what if these disturbances we've been having aren't just a coincidence; maybe they think keeping us busy will stop us from sensing the power."

Billy looked at Geneva bewildered "but that would mean that someone was behind the power build up."

Geneva looked back at him with narrowed eyes. "Who could make that much energy?!" Elijah stammered.

"Why would they want that much energy? What would they need it for?" Celest thought out loud.

"Whatever it is, whatever the reason; it needs to be taken care of." Maura said.

"Your comrades, what of them; will they not help us?" Dom asked.

Maura's expression fell as she stared down at the floor. "My comrades were killed in a battle while I was sealed. The whole brigade was taken out in an encounter against one of our own kind. In those days, the alliance of heaven was unstable; many were cast out, including my mentor. I only found out a few days ago."

"I'm sorry Maura; it must be hard for you." Dom said.

"Are you sure you're alright?" Billy inquired.

She smiled knowing that they both cared about her "I will learn to deal with it. You never get over these things, you know?"

Akiko clapped her hands together "it's almost dinner time! I'll make a big meal to celebrate your return Maura! I'll make anything you want, just name it!"

"Aye, grand idea 'Ki'! We'll have our own little event!" Billy agreed.

"Well, come along Maura!" Akiko said, pushing her toward the kitchen as everyone followed.

Seppen had left his post temporarily to regain his vigor; Arman still slept from inside the protruding root. Kori steps from the shadows looking down on Arman maliciously.

"Without you, Seppen will have only me to love. Therefore, you must go." Kori whispers under her breath as she produces a blade of ice above her head and brings it down on the roots edge. Mist poured out from the open gap and Kori disappears into the shadows once again.

When Seppen awoke he found Arman's lifeless body still in the root where he left him. He got down on his knees holding Arman close to him and screamed in vain shedding tears of anger and rage. His eyes seemed to grow colder as his tears became frozen and his hazy aura of ice became more visible. His hair became icier and his skin tone became bluer "I will find out who did this to you, and I will kill them and the ones they love!"

Chapter 11 - Hearts in Ice

Billy and Akiko sleep soundly in each others embrace; it had been a long day for them with Maura's return. The bedroom door flies open and Margaret stands in the doorway looking troubled. "Billy, you should see this." She said grimly.

Billy and Akiko follow her down the stairs and into the living room where everyone sits around the television. "What is it?" Billy inquires.

"Just watch" his sister replies.

A news broadcaster stands in the middle of Glasgow reporting the event, the buildings are covered in ice and people are frozen where they stand. "It seems that one of the reported demons is here in the middle of town square, and is covering everything in ice. People walking down the streets are even encased in a shimmering blanket. The demon seems to be searching for something or perhaps someone as he hasn't caused any damage yet to the citizens or the city itself. More to co…" the transmission goes out into static.

"Another one?!!" Orlando cries.

"It's an ice demon; but I thought they were wiped out by the blue race…" Celest says.

"I thought so too; I guess at least one survived the mage war." Maura said.

"Akiko, we have to do something!" Billy pleads. "What if he kills the townspeople, they can't even runaway!"

"Billy's right, we have to stop him. He may be looking for us anyhow." Akiko says.

Geneva pumps her fists toward her eager for battle "well what are we waiting for?! Let's get dressed and save ourselves a city!!" Everyone agrees and rushes to their rooms to get clothed.

* * *

Sean and Alexandra come downstairs to find the house empty; they travel outside to find Margaret standing alone facing Glasgow. "They left us behind; funny, I never thought my brother would have such a grand adventure and leave me behind."

"They left without us?! How will we get there in time, it takes at least twenty minutes on the road and then we'd have to find them!"

"I know how we can get there Daddy." Alexandra said.

Margaret smiled "how can we get there Alli?"

She holds up her small doll "Tiff can take us; she can travel real fast too!"

Sean pats his daughter on the head "I don't think Tiff can get us there Alli."

Tiff blinks and Margaret stares at the doll with wide eyes that resemble Billy's. "It moved!"

"What?"

She stares at it closely as Tiff smiles back and giggles. "Hi there!" she chirps.

Sean's eyes become fixed on the doll as he stares unbelievingly. "Alli; Tiff is alive?!"

Alexandra laughs "of course Daddy, who do you think I talk to all day long?"

"Can she really get us to town?" Margaret asks.

"If Alli wants to go I can take us!" Tiff confidently stated.

"How should we travel?" Alexandra inquires.

"You always said you wanted to ride atop the water like your dad does, and that water goes really fast!" Tiff suggests.

"But I can't swim and if we fall in I'll drown!"

"Then we'll just have to replace the water with something you like!"

Alexandra holds onto her dad and Margaret as the try to keep there balance on top of a massive wave of cookies. "No one will believe this!" Margaret shouts over the roar of the surf.

"No one has to know!" Sean shouts back.

They arrive in town in almost no time at all. "Alli, you and Margaret should go and find a safe place to hide yourselves. I'm gonna go find Elijah and the others." Sean says.

"Ok Daddy." She replies, running off behind Margaret.

Sean doesn't search for long before he finds what he's looking for. Seppen is busy with Celest and Maura while Geneva, Billy and Oki try to free Dom, Orli and Elijah from ice. They stand partially frozen as Geneva hacks at the ice and Oki and Billy chip it away; Akiko stays above them, protecting them with a wall of strong wind.

"How did you guys get frozen?!" Sean inquires over the howl of the wind.

"He surprised us and tried to put us with the townspeople!" Elijah answered.

A distant scream is heard over the fierce air stream. "That sounded like Alexandra!" Sean cried.

"You go on Sean; we'll be fine. Oki and Geneva will free us!" Dominic said.

"Come on Sean, let's go!" Billy said, taking off in the direction of the scream.

"So, two females have escaped Seppen's icy veil. Well, I'll fix that…" Kori promised, grinning intently; Margaret holds Alexandra close.

As Sean and Billy come across them Kori was chanting in a strange tongue and Margaret and Alexandra are glowing with an odd radiance. "Hey, leave them alone!" Billy shouts at her, breaking her concentration.

"Come and take on some men and leave the women alone!" Sean yells.

Her eyes glow angrily "I'll take care of you, both of you!" She opens a skeletal wingspan of ice and charges at the two men only to be rammed backwards. Kori shakes it off and looks up to see Akiko standing in her way of them.

"You will not harm the one I love." Akiko sternly declares.

"Then you will die first!" Kori hisses chasing after Akiko as she leads her away from them.

"Daddy!"

"Billy, what's happening?!" Margaret asks nervously.

Billy and Sean glance over to see Margaret growing younger while Alexandra grows older. "What the hell…" Billy trails off.

"Go get Oki; she might know how to stop this!" Sean said as he rushed to his daughter's side.

"Watch Margaret!" He said turning only to be struck in the stomach. Kurayami smiled contently as she picked Billy up and slung him over her shoulder.

"He's mine now." She said leaping into the air and disappearing.

"Billy!" Sean cried out after them.

"No don't take him away!" Margaret shouted.

Maura lets off three flaming orbs at Seppen, but misses him because of his agility. Celest creates two blades of light with her sword, hitting him across his back and burning him badly. Maura runs through one of his ice wings breaking it into hundreds of tiny pieces. He fell for only a moment as he regenerated a new wing and continued to advance. Again he is ambushed by fire and light and burned; his hair and wings begin to soften under all the heat.

Akiko lead Kori back to where Maura and Celest fought Seppen. Soon he was under so much heat that his hair had completely thawed and his wings had melted away. Seppen fell, unconscious and without wings to glide on. Kori caught him and disappeared with him.

The three descended to their frozen comrades and Maura defrosted them. "Thank you, Maura. I think my fingers would've fallen off in another minute." Elijah said from around Geneva.

"Yes, thank you Maura…where's Billy and Sean?" Dominic inquired.

"I know where they are." Akiko said, going in the direction in which she left them.

When they found them Sean was holding a preadolescent Alexandria and a mid-twenties version of Margaret. "Please, help them." Sean pleaded, almost crying.

Oki, Maura and Celest leaned in closer to examine them. "What happened to them?" Orlando asked in an upset tone of voice.

Maura shook her head "they've been cursed. I don't know how, or how to counter it."

Oki wiped away Alexandra's tear "the only way to undo the damage is to heal their soul, which is how they were cursed."

"How do we do that?" Sean asked, trying to comfort them.

"I don't know; that would take great power." Celest stated.

"Where's Billy?" Dominic asked looking about his frozen surroundings.

Sean didn't look at them, just stared down at the ground. Akiko stared at them waiting "Sean?"

Margaret breathed in for strength "a woman took him from here. She was of regular stature with long curly black hair, dead brown eyes and lifeless vines all around her."

Akiko stared at them in disbelief along with the others around her. Akiko's cry of anguish echoed off of the frozen walls of the city.

Chapter 12 - Daddy's Little Girl

Alexandra chases after Tiff as she seemingly floats away. "Tiff, Wait!"

"Sorry Alli, you're all grown up now. You don't need me anymore."

"Yes I do, you're my friend Tiff!"

"Sorry Alli…" her voice trailed off as Alexandra awakens from the dream. She was now in her early thirties. She glances over her dad and to Margaret who slept on the couch in their bedroom; Margaret was now in her late teen years.

Tiff stirs and stares up to Alexandra's height "what's wrong Alli?"

"T-ko, are you ever going to leave me?"

Tiff's eyes grew distressed "do you want me leave?"

"No! Never!" she cried out. "You're my bestest friend T-ko!"

She smiled "you're my bestest friend too Alli; let's get back to sleep now."

"Ok tiff" she said lying back down. The sun did not rise that morning, the sky was heavy with dark clouds; the air was chilled and the wind blew strong. It was like this all over the world, earth was covered in a thick darkness; Glasgow was still under ice.

They had put Akiko in Billy's bedroom and left her to be alone; she had curled up in the familiar scent of their sheets and tried to remember how warm it was when he held her close. Maura had gone with Dominic to the cathedral in Edinburgh; they had left after Billy's abduction. Elijah and Geneva were downstairs in the living room sitting on the couch, too troubled to sleep. Oki came down the stairs quietly "Orli finally fell asleep, you should try and sleep too Elijah."

"I can't sleep now. I don't want to sleep either. I have a terrible feeling that something is going to happen very soon." Elijah replied.

"I sense something too" Geneva said, nudging Elijah with her forehead gently.

"We all have the sensation in the back of our mind, I think the energy pocket Maura was talking about is about to serve it's purpose." Oki stated.

Dominic sits in the pew at the church, praying for Billy's likelihood; Maura approaches him from the steeple. She kneels at the edge of the pew, crossing herself, and then takes a seat next to him. He looks from his spot on the floor where he was down on his knees "well, what did you find out?"

"I do not have the power or authority to change them; it would take a different kind of magic to undo the curse." Dominic's eyes were downcast and he looked as though he had given up. Maura held his chin in the hand carefully "But maybe the power of the ancients can save them."

His eyes narrow in on her "Akiko?"

Kurayami stands in front of Billy who sleeps undisturbed in the giant roots of the tree; she had fitted him in long robes to keep him warm in the cold darkness. As Seppen grew stronger his freezing aura spread throughout the vicinity. She draws closer to him, placing her temple on his "where are you…?"

Billy's subconscious lifts his head "who's there?" Kurayami appears before him with a slight smile of pleasure in knowing she had trapped him. "What do you want?" He said, glaring at her.

"Just curious to see what Akiko sees; it's not much." She grated.

Billy ignored the comment; he didn't care what she thought of him. "Where am I?" he inquired.

"The subconscious level, that is why you cannot stay awake; it is the space between your plain of existence and the dream realm. Mortals can't stay alive there very long, but Akiko wouldn't leave you now would she? Even so, your body is in my seedling that I planted from Master Liam's tree." Kurayami elucidated.

"Liam? Did he send those demons to us?"

"When he felt Maura's life waves strengthening he set all the sealed beings free; without him Akiko would still be in her long sleep. You should thank him, but then again he's going to destroy your world and fill it with darkness so maybe you should hold off."

"No! He can't!" Billy protested.

"Oh yes! He will unlock the dimensions and summon this tree to earth, and then he will choose which branch to invoke! He's been cultivating the dark branches of death just for that purpose! Then everything will be his for the taking, but Akiko will be me where she belongs; she will no longer reject me from her heart!"

"What do you want with Akiko?! Leave her alone!!" Billy shouts desperately.

"I'm afraid not little man, if you're lucky I'll kill you quickly when your time comes." She grabs hold of his face "what makes you think she loves you? She can't even love herself." Kurayami releases him and disappears from his mind's eye. "Think about it."

Dominic and Maura arrive home around a little after lunchtime; but nobody had eaten breakfast or lunch; they come in and are startled to find that the aging process is speeding up. Alexandra and Margaret sit in the living room with the rest of the household; Alexandra was middle aged and Margaret was about twelve.

"Where's Akiko?" Maura inquired, noticing wasn't in the room.

"She's still in Billy's room, why?" Celest responded.

"She can help them" Dom says following Maura up the stairs.

They knock on the door softly and open it slowly; "Akiko, can we speak with you?" Maura asks.

Akiko opens her swollen, bloodshot eyes and lifts her head groggily; she had just fallen asleep a few hours ago. "Of course" she says tiredly, rubbing her tearstained face.

"I spoke with a counsel early this morning; they said that only you can save Alexandra and Margaret. Their souls were cursed, and cannot be cured in this realm."

Akiko tried to think through her recurring thoughts of her lost loved one "I don't know, I've never healed anything like that before; I wouldn't know where to start and if I do something wrong it may make them worse."

"You have to try Akiko, isn't there anything you can do?" Dom asks worriedly.

Sean had been standing in the hallway listening. "Akiko, you have to save my little girl; please, you have to do something." He pleads.

She looks toward Maura "are they near death?"

"They won't make it through the night at this rate." She says.

"Alright, I'll see what I can do."

"Thank you, Akiko." Maura says.

"Yes, thank you." Sean agrees as Dom smiles at her sadly and closes the door.

They laid Margaret and Alexandra down next to each other on the floor with some blankets and pillows to make them comfortable. Everyone stayed with them in the living room, watching them in the night.

Akiko drifts through the sapphire mist of the dream realm, many azure orbs glow in the distance. She makes her way toward two fading spheres that linger next to each other. Reaching into them she brings their glow back with a greenish tint, then wearily pulls her herself out of the craving balls of life energy breathing heavily.

In the morning Sean awoke to find that everyone had fallen asleep downstairs; he moved over to where Alexandra and Margaret had slept to find the blankets empty. "No…" he begged it not to be true, could Akiko do nothing? Tears fell down his face as he stroked where Alexandra slept the night before.

"What's wrong Sean?" someone said from behind. A tall woman with long brown hair stands behind him, putting her hand on his shoulder for support.

"How long have you been here Christine?" he asked unstably.

"Long enough to get some coffee with Billy's sister, why? My plain couldn't land in Glasgow so they landed in London and then loaded us onto a train."

"Why is Daddy crying?"

Sean whirls around to find Alexandra standing in the kitchen doorway holding Tiff tightly. Margaret appears behind her stirring a cup of steaming coffee "we didn't want to wake you guys, you've hardly slept."

"They let me in and we've been having a nice conversation."

Sean stands taking Christine's hand and picks up Alexandra in the other arm. "Christine, we have a lot more to tell you than I'm sure they have told you."

She looks at him perplexed "why do you say that? And where is Billy?"

"Come on, let's have another long conversation." He said leading them into the kitchen.

"I'll make some tea; they'll be awake soon too." Margaret said watching everyone sleep spread throughout the room.

Kurayami enters the shadowed throne where Liam resides "yes master, you called for me?"

"Yes; it's time." He said smoothly.

Chapter 13 - Yggdrasil

Oki stirs in her sleep as the melancholy song of the ocean calls to her in her dreams; she awakens in a cold sweat. She travels across the hallway to the bathroom and runs her head under the facet. 'Why are they calling to me? Do they want me to return to them?'

She listens again and hears it in the back of her mind, but also closer; somewhere in the house. Following the ancient chant she ends up at Sean and Alexandra's door; poking her head inside she finds that Alexandra is singing the sonnet of the ocean in her sleep. 'But how; mortal women are deaf to the siren's call. How is it that Alexandra can hear it and chant with them?'

Oki closes the door and starts back toward her room; she stops in front of Orlando's room and looks in to check on him. His bed was empty. She goes downstairs to find Maura drinking tea by the window. "Have you seen Orli?" She asked concerned.

"He went to the ocean with a flat board of wood saying that he needed to relieve some stress." Maura answered her without looking up.

Oki stared at her in shock "and you just let him go?!"

"He's just going to the water Oki, he should be alright. Why are you worried?"

"It's exactly why I'm worried" she said opening the closet and pulling out an old broom.

"What are you doing with Geneva's enchanted broom?" Maura asked perplexed.

"I'll bring it right back, don't worry."

Oki opened the front door and held onto the broomstick as it took off into the sky at an extreme speed. Maura watched her go then went inside and closed the door; she turned to return to her spot at the window and found Akiko standing behind her in a daze. She walked past Maura without acknowledging she was there and through the wooden door leaving only a fading green glow for a moment. Maura flung the door open and watched her go into the woods. "Akiko?"

Akiko drifts over the forest in reverie as the trees glow a pale green, leaving the branches and leaves in dim particles the light gathers around her. She now radiates with a soft aura, her body is covered in illuminated ancient markings and her frail glass wings are extended.

Oki made it to the nearest shore and landed next to Orlando's rental car. She looked about for him as the haunting song grew louder in her mind. She found him in the water waiting for the next curl of water, sitting on his board seemingly in a trance. The water withdrew and a large wave swallowed him up where he sank slowly to the bottom. Oki dove in after him, cutting through the water swiftly. She approached his unconscious body as the water on the surface became more violent; she wrapped her flowing sleeves around him creating a protective bubble filled with air.

She begins to sing a low calming melody trying to sooth the ocean's ire; Orlando opens his eyes to see her over him cast in the pale light shinning down from the water's surface. 'I fell? She saved me? Oki…'

Celest stands at the edge of the roof, watching the sky become covered in murky clouds. The house began to quaver violently, waking everyone up; they runs outside to find a giant trees looming over the distance. Maura stares at it with wide eyes "Yggdrasil! Here?!"

"Yggdrasil? You mean like in the Norse mythology?" Sean inquired.

"Not really the same; it has three branches of destiny: Life, Death and Revolution. When summoned to a plain one of these branches is invoked, deciding the fate of that world."

Celest leaps down from her perch "we need to get rid of that tree; no good will come of this."

Sean holds Alexandra and Christine close "what can we do?"

"We can't leave you here; it's going to get much worse than it's been. Those demons will return." Geneva says.

"Where's Oki; and Orli…and Akiko too?" Margaret inquires.

"Oki went to get Orli, and Akiko is in the woods." Maura says.

Dominic stands alone, looking hard into the heavy overcast "do you guys see something?"

The clouds gather round and round, then open as something descends upon them at an enormous velocity; grabbing Dominic up and flying in the direction of the tree. Maura opens her wings and takes chase after them.

"Come on, let's go!" Geneva says lifting Elijah onto her back and soaring into the air after them.

Celest takes Margaret onto her own back and follows over the treetops; Sean looks to Alexandra "well, I guess we should follow too."

"Yay!" Tiff and Alexandra simultaneously agree.

"So, am I going to see this wave of cookies?" Christine asks her daughter.

Alexandra and Tiff exchange grins "of course!"

Tiff creates the swell of cookies from Alexandra's imagination while Sean and Christine hold on for dear life; Celest seemingly floats over the forest with Margaret holding onto her shoulders.

Maura follows closely behind Seppen, who held Dom tightly in his grasps; she stops for a moment, sensing something behind her. 'A great power…from the forest; what is that?!' Suddenly a green flash shoots past and heads toward Yggdrasil. "What the hell is going on here?" She asks herself, bearing to the tree again.

Oki and Orlando had washed ashore; he sputters and breathes in deeply while she also regains her strength. "What happened? It was like being asleep, I couldn't move."

"The sirens were calling to me through the water; you must've perceived it as well."

"The sirens?" Orlando asked.

Oki stands and looks out to the raging ocean "there, can't you see them?"

Orlando stands wearily and approaches her from behind, staring into the ocean; there he saw hundreds of glowing blue eyes staring back at him as the sirens watched them from over the waves. Only the tops of their heads from the nose up peered over the water's surface; all of them had a shimmering green array of tiny scales that swirled in patterns over their pale skin. Their hair was long and colored either sea green or deep blue. "Sirens…"

Poking their heads above the water they begin to sing their lulling tune; Orli goes under the spell again and slowly walks toward the ocean. Oki grabs him and pulls him back into reality "don't listen to them! Their song lures men to their deaths!"

Orlando looked up at her with wide eyes; he couldn't help it, he was a man after all. Oki held her refined hands over his ears and tired to drone out the sirens; looking toward the city she stops and stands, staring bewildered. Orlando stands with her and the chants of the ocean stop. "What is it, Oki?"

"That tree; it isn't supposed to be here!" She cries.

"And neither are you!" Kori yells, appearing from the sky and rushing toward Oki with her sword of ice drawn.

Oki grabs Orlando and rolls out of her way. "Get out of here Orli!" she directs, pushing him toward the woods.

"What about you?" He asks nervously.

"Just go! Now!"

Orlando hesitated a moment then dashed off into the deep woods, trying to keep his footing in the clear areas. He notices something running parallel to him in the trees and another on his other side; tripping over a low-lying shrub he falls to the ground. Out from the shadows of the trees emerge the two giant wolves that had saved Geneva and Elijah from the dryads.

They stop and smell him carefully. "He's been engulfed in Elven magic" the black one says over growls.

"He's also been around the light at one time" the white one adds.

"The light has left the forest, now she approaches Yggdrasil never to return to us." The black one rumbles looking Orli over. "Should we follow?"

"Yes, this is the last chance we may get to keep our woods safe; bring him, we can't leave someone blessed by the light of the forest and the elves here."

The black wolf stands near Orlando and glares at him with a snarl; he didn't argue with that, he mounted it and clung onto his long fur tightly as they seemingly flew through the forest. They moved so fast that with their shimmering coats they seemed to be like shooting stars in the night sky; coming to a profound drop off they leapt over the edge and braced their legs for impact while Orli screamed.

Oki stood in the sand as the water washed over her ankles; Kori smirked and extended her hand to the sky summoning a bitter vapor that clung to the air. The ocean began to freeze over the surface in peaks and curls as the sirens sang for their beloved Oki to return to them. Holding out there arms she calls the strength of the ocean to her, the tide rolls back leaving her standing on the wet sand and breaks apart the ice forming on top. A monstrous tidal wave gathers behind her; Kori's lips curl into a wicked smirk "I will lock your aquatic fury in ice, Elven guardian of the water!"

Kori intensified the cold fog and the magnificent curl of water started to collect small ice crystals all around it. Oki opened her ignited blues eyes in accord with a blazing set of azure eyes from the center of the wave; the water rushed toward them taking the shape of an ancient dragon with a serpent-like body and an iced mane. Moving past her and consuming Kori; Oki weakly drops to her knees as the dragon turns upward into the sky to return to the ocean when it scatters apart back into droplets of salty water. Oki watches as Kori, who had destroyed it, approaches her bringing her sword over her head. She bows her head accepting death; a tear escapes her eye and as it touches the ground the clouds open up with rain. Kori drops to the ground in front of her, screaming in pain as her power seemingly melts; looking up she finds a tall warrior of the past holding a sword in her back that was surrounded with a brilliant flame.

"Aban?" she asked, looking up to his stature. "Is it you that I have longed for so long for that stands in front of my very eyes?"

"Oki, I wouldn't have left you alone in this world; don't you know that?" He said in a gentle deep voice.

"I know; I've looked for you, and kept our song for only us."

Kori watched from the ground where she lay; the ice in the hair had melted away, her skin tone was pink from the heat and burns, and a puddle had formed around her from her once shimmering wings of ice. 'Am I never to feel that sort of love, the passion between two people who only desire each other to survive the passing time?' she thought, thinking of Seppen all the while. 'I only wish to see him again before I go.' She slowly arose to her feet and drifted off into the distance.

Dominic awoke to cold droplets on his face lying on a large wooden platform; he stood up rubbing his head. 'What happened…a tree? Tree?' He slowly realized where he was; on the top branch of Yggdrasil. "The tree! How…?"

A tall dark figure emerged from the far side of the branch "I had Seppen bring you here. You see, you're important to Maura so she'll come to rescue you; but always, always remember one thing about her: she's mine. I made her the greatness she is today, without me she'd be a mere guardian angel watching pathetic souls like yourself try to find ways around The Almighty's rules. Believe me; you humes don't deserve his love!"

Dom stood in Liam's shadow as his dark armor and features blended together in the obscurity on the tree. He opened his gold eyes staring into Dominic's soul; he threw back his draping cloak to reveal a massive ebony wingspan. Jagged fangs smiled at him sinisterly "don't worry; you will be shortly joined by your kin and companions after I kill you, you won't be alone in death."

Chapter 14 - Strength of the Ancients

Billy groggily opens his eyes, finding a blurred figure standing over him; he slowly started to focus his eyes "Akiko…? …You're not Akiko!"

Kurayami chuckled "are you sure?"

"Who are you?!" Billy demanded.

She lowered her eyes at him "Liam named me Kurayami when he found me, and that's exactly what I am; a shadow, the shadow of your beloved Akiko's heart!"

Billy's eyes grow wide "what…?"

"When the ancient race purified her human heart to make her their light in this world they stole a piece of her; me. I am what they took away from her, I am what was cast from her soul, I am Akiko!"

"No... no! That can't be true; can it?!"

"Seeing all that you've seen so far do you really mean to say that you don't believe in what you can't explain?" She grabs hold of his face looking into his eyes "so then you don't believe in Akiko's existence either, do you…? It's all just a bad dream from too many stories of elves and demons is it? Well?"

"Only when I'm with Akiko does it ever seem like a dream; just because it's all too wonderful to be real." He said glaring back at her.

The tree begins to shake terribly as though being crashed into again and again. Kurayami releases Billy and looks into the water to see what's happening outside. Akiko, gleaming with a radiant aura, was running into the trunk trying to crack a small opening. "She won't get into Yggdrasil; its magic is older and more powerful than her."

As the tree trembles, Dom tries to keep his balance at the drenched top. Liam stares downward and smirks "I hope you've had a good life thus far." He drew his dark wings back then brought them forward creating a strong wind; throwing Dominic over the side of Yggdrasil, he watches him fall into the dark clouds where he losses sight of him. Turning to return inside the tree he hears something approach from behind him; he turns to find Maura holding Dom in her grasps. Placing Dominic down safely, she produces her glaive; Liam closes his grasp opening his massive sword as they begin battle.

Geneva arrives, crashing down onto Seppen as they begin to fight; Elijah clings to her frightened he may either fall or be slashed by the ice saber Seppen held. Celest arrives at the same time as Sean, Christine, Alexandra and Tiff; she lifts Margaret down with them near the base of the monstrous roots where they find cover from the heavy rain. Sean approached Celest "would you put Alexandra somewhere safe? If she stays here with us and we're found out…we may attract some attention being a small group after all."

Celest takes her up "Of course." Running up the side of the slippery trunk, she spots a large dry leafy branch and sets Alexandra there with Tiff in her grasps. Then she steps off the branch and falls with her katana in front of her, blade pointing downward. Celest appears out of the darkened sodden mist and lands her blade's edge in Seppen. He pushes her off as Geneva comes at him again, her claws streaming silver ribbons.

Aban and Oki now stand in the park, on the hill where Orlando first encountered her. He lifts her up onto the large slab of stone to see the tree in full "can you see what's happening?"

Oki strains her eyes through the downpour as he climbs up after her "I see two angels flying about each other…three warriors fighting and a bright green light ramming into the side of the trunk."

Standing next to her he looks about the edges of the woods "and your friend from before?"

She searches the dripping trees "don't see him…only two forest guardians making for Yggdrasil."

"He may yet be safe, we shouldn't give up any hope yet; none of the roots have been activated."

Akiko finally breaches the trunk where Kurayami held Billy captive inside; Kurayami had fallen and lay on the root Billy was entangled. Akiko floats down and stops in front of them. Kurayami lifts her head to her as she hangs in the air glowing brightly from the ancient markings. "Akiko, you came back to me" she said evilly.

"I have come for my beloved" Akiko said, her voice magnified by the power.

"Then you will have to take him from me!" Kurayami hissed.

She leapt into the air, opening her delicate black glass wings and discharging a dark ball of energy at her. Akiko throws a green sphere toward her; they collide and swirl into each other, exploding upon impact at the center. As a wave of dark energy comes at her she closes her clear wings about her creating a barrier, then opens them back up and brings them forward to send a strong wind of glowing leaves at Kurayami. Both of them never use their full power, as the after draft of excess energy would destroy Billy.

Outside Maura and Liam flew around each other in a circle then charged head on; sparks would ignite where their blades would meet. Never opening a weak spot and always attacking from the front, they had soon come to a standstill with their blades closed in front of them. "Maura, leave these mortals behind! Come with me and we'll rule together forever!"

"I will defend them until my death! It is my calling; to stand up for those who cannot!"

"So now you're a prince are you? They would you behind, alone; they've done it before."

"But I never will; I'll never leave them without help! I thought you knew me better than that; better than I knew you!" She snapped, breaking away.

Liam looks around through the rain, she had seemingly disappeared. "So, you didn't guess that I would walk away from it all?! You didn't imagine that I would find Yggdrasil and plant it on earth?! But the best is yet to come; I will summon the branch of darkness and engulf this world in darkness!!!" He shouted trying to draw her out.

Maura came down, appearing from nowhere and slices his wings completely off. Liam falls and lands on the tree near Dom with his severed wings around him; he lays staring up at the dark sky in disbelief as the falling water runs into his seeping blood. "So…the student has surpassed the teacher…"

She takes Dom up in her arms and carries him down the side of Yggdrasil; they come across the gapping hole that Akiko had opened and slip inside to escape the rainfall. There they see Akiko stab Kurayami through her abdomen with a blade of pure light; she drops to the floor and stares up at Akiko sadly. "I only wanted to be loved; I thought you would understand more than anyone…"

Yggdrasil begins to violently quaver under their feet and the darkened shade of the root of Death moves throughout the whole tree. "Akiko, get Billy; we have to get as far away from here as possible! Yggdrasil is opening the gates of darkness!" Maura cried out.

Akiko frees Billy with her light then lets it go as it disappears; she walks him over to Maura and Dominic and gives him to her. "Take care of him Maura; and take the others far away from here just incase this doesn't work."

Dominic, who clung onto Maura's back, and Billy looked to her confused. Maura lowered her eyes and sighed forlornly "So, the stories are true then; only the ancients will save us in the end."

"I was made to protect this world; I have to follow my destiny as it was set before me."

Billy shook his head and his eyes swelled with tears "no, you can't…you'll die!"

"I know, but that's the way it is. And if it keeps you safe then I'll do it no matter what. Please go with Maura, and save your friends; I have to do this."

Maura held onto Billy and slowly raised into the air as Billy reached for her all the way, tears streaming down his face. Akiko watched them go then walked to the center of the room; Kurayami observed her from the floor. "You…you're going to destroy yourself to save him? Why…why Akiko?"

"Because I love him too much to let him die." She looks over at her "that's why I sent you away, to live; so that a piece of me might have another chance."

"Akiko…"

Maura with Dominic and Billy returns to the others at the soaked base of Yggdrasil. "Where are Elijah and Geneva…and Alexandra too?" Dom inquires.

"Celest put Alexandra somewhere safe and Elijah is with Geneva" Margaret says pointing upward.

"We have to go, the gate is going to open" Maura says.

"What about them?" Christine asks.

"I'll tell them" Maura travels back up the trunk.

Seppen gashes Geneva across her front and she falls spilling emerald blood onto a nearby root with Elijah; Celest comes at him from behind but Seppen turns and creates a blade of energy with his sword, knocking her onto a branch. Kori appears to him weakly, almost falling but he catches her. "Kori?! What happened?!" he asked, holding her dying body closely.

"…Seppen, we shouldn't have been saved…no one should exist that can't even feel the warmth…"

"Kori, you're hurt; try not to speak now."

She laughs painfully "beings like us don't belong here." Seppen coughs up a spurt of blood as Kori pulls her sword out of his heart "forgive me my love."

Together they fall, past Maura and onto a low-lying branch. Maura keeps moving upward, and finds Elijah holding Geneva where they landed. "Elijah, you're arm; it's broken." Maura says, landing next to them.

Geneva chuckles slowly "hello Maura, here to save us all once again?"

She picks up the wounded dryad and lifts Elijah onto her back "we have to leave now; Akiko is going to seal Yggdrasil away."

"What about Celest and Alexandra?" Elijah asks.

"Alexandra has Tiff with her and Celest can take care of herself, they'll be fine until I return for them."

Celest lies on her back as her spirit energy leaves her "so, I'm near to death once again; this time my parting wish shall be…" She notices Alexandra holding a lifeless Tiff in her arms crying. "Damn, can't move on yet…"

Maura lands again on the ground and Tiff floats behind with Alexandra in her grasps. "Miss Celest…she left and told us to follow you, Miss Maura!" Alexandra cries out, landing in Sean's arms.

"How will we get away fast enough?" Christine inquires.

Geneva watches the woods "Orlando has brought your answer."

The two wolves bound out from the woods with Orlando with them. Maura grabs up Billy and Dominic as she did before as the others climb onto the wolves carefully holding on to their damp fur.

"And Akiko?" Geneva asks, looking back at Maura and Billy.

Billy hesitates a moment "she knows her path to follow."

Geneva smiles sadly at him as they disappear into the forest like shooting stars followed by Maura.

Akiko floats upward a little ways off the ground and the symbols on her skin move to the tree; Liam still lies on the top branch as the symbols wash over him. Faint green rings appear around it and read in a foreign tongue; releasing her power a great wave of radiant energy thrusts up from the ground, surrounding Yggdrasil entirely.

Billy and Dominic watch from afar as they make their escape until it is far too bright to see anything anymore.

Chapter 15 - Cherry Blossoms mean Nostalgia

'It's been year now and everything has returned to normal; the people in the cities that were frozen didn't seem to remember anything. To them it was as though none of it happened, but to us it was all too real; I still keep the robes Akiko's shadow gave me hanging on my wall. Yggdrasil was sealed into a beautiful cypress that stands in the middle of the park; the ancient symbols were burned into the bark. Elijah returned to New York with Geneva; it seems her days of the Ruthless Shooting Star have died down to a halt. Sean and Christine decided to take an extended family vacation from their visit to Scotland. Celest and Maura disappeared after the incident, we haven't seen them since; Dominic doesn't seem too worried, he's visiting Japan to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. Oki and Aban were sealed again after Yggdrasil was sealed, as were all the other beings. Orlando visits the statue of the two past lovers every first of the month; thinking back I realized that that's when he found her on that hill. Margaret returned to her life, she has the ability to put things behind her and move on. I never saw Akiko again, except in my most cherished memories and sometimes in dreams. As for me…'

"Billy, how long will you sit under that tree? Come and sit with us!" A man says from behind.

"I'll be along in a moment."

'As for me, I have a little more trouble moving on that my sister.'

A gentle breeze blows over his face rustling his hair and foot steps are heard approaching from behind. Billy turns to see someone standing in the gleam of the sun; he focuses his eyes and jumps up, not knowing what to do. Akiko stands behind him with her usual soft smile "hello."

He runs to her and wraps his arms around her tightly "not a day has gone by that I didn't think of you!"

Akiko puts her arms around his neck and rests her head next to his "nor I. I was drifting between life and death with only Kurayami next to me; I took her back into my heart and became a mortal woman once again. I want to grow old and die, but only if it's with you."

Dominic walks through the streets covered in the pink and white blossoms when a dark blur takes him into the air. He watches the tops of the trees below his feet and looks upward at his captor. "Maura…!"

She looks down and smiles at him "hello Mimmii, sorry I'm late!"

"Why are you here; what about Billy?"

"Billy loves Akiko, but I…I love you."

They land atop Tokyo Tower and watch the wind carry the lovely petals. Maura takes his hand into hers "I've got a new assignment."

He looks saddened as she may be sent away from him "yes?"

"I have to keep you out of trouble."

He looks at her confused. She laughs "it's not everyone who is in love with their guardian angel."

He smiles and grasps her hand tighter.

Billy still holds Akiko in his arms as they stare at the swaying trees. "Soon it will be fall again, and all the green leaves will be gone." Billy says.

"But they will always return to you, just like good times."

"And you?" he asks sincerely.

"I'll never leave you to begin with."

He draws back a little, tilting his head slightly to stare deeper within her dark eyes. There she was, all that he lived for... never to leave his arms again. Slowly, Billy pulled Akiko closer. Their lips met softly, passionately. This moment they shared under the once great Yggdrasil.
