How To Cope

Dealing with an online relationship

There are many things that go with an online relationships. Those hardships are often the reason for breaking up or never meeting each other offline. Here are some of the frustrations that people in an online relationship have to deal with:

Distance between partner and self (long-distance)
Feeling alone and different from other people
Often ridiculed by friends and family members, or even strangers
Almost get no support from family and friends
Not enough money or time to visit partner
No physical touching between partner for a long time
The above can cause loneliness and depression
Timezones can cause stress between meeting times
Partner can be located in a different country/continent which adds to stress
Often paranoid about the partner not being faithful

Basically, an online relationship is hard. Some of those frustrations do not apply to everyone, though I must say everyone finds it frustrating to not be together physically. Starting out as an online relationship, is even worse as starting out as a long distance relationship. Many have to withstand ridicule among their peers, saying things like: "How can you be sure it's not a 40 year old pervert?" and: "What if he/she is a rapist and has one leg?". This is all because the couple has not yet met each other offline (which is reason enough for other people to believe you can never truly know what they look like). Because of this, online relationships are by far more ridiculed than a long distance relationship (though they have their own frustrations to deal with). It's not easy being in an online relationship when most of your family members think you're chatting with a potential murder or rapist. They usually give no support whatsoever, and even go as far as to dismiss the entire relationship as 'fake'. Friends usually think they're just 'taking care of you' when they mention you should stop chatting with your online partner because they might kill you when you meet them.

Anyone in an online relationship, these sayings must be familiar to them. Online relationships have a stigma attached to them that everyone thinks it'll be bad, and end up in being killed. Most serious online relationships, probably know this is a bunch of bullshit and just want some support from family and friends, and not the constant whining about "You don't really know them, it could be a rapist or murderer.". Yes we know this is a possibility, just like how your offline relationship might end up in you being raped and murdered, who knows. So, how do you deal with all of that stuff?
