BIOGRAPHY:
DEBRA COPPINGER HILL
Rancher, Cowboy Poet, Columnist, Humorist

of the family Horse Operation. She and her family raise
registered Cutting and Ranch Work horses in rural
what she knows best - Horses, Cowboys, Cowgirls and
the Land. Her writing includes poetry, a syndicated column,
short stories and biographies and ranges from serious to
inspirational to humorous.
Award for Excellence in Cowboy Poetry and is the recipient
of the first TR Stephenson Memorial Cowboy Poetry Award.
She has performed and taught Western poetry in many venues
across
times to
Gerard Manley Hopkins Institute and performed at Arts Festivals
across the country. She was also honored by
of her Cherokee Bead Art and has been requested to return and
present a larger show and to share information on her Cherokee heritage.
Debra and her Oklahoma Cowboy Poet Friends have performed Cowboy Poetry on the floor
of the House of Representatives of the State of
the State for their efforts in preserving this form of literature.
She is published in collections by Gibbs-Smith, Southwest Whispers and Wild Buckaroo Press. Her
chapbook Common Sense, Men and Horses (and CD of the same name) received an Academy of
Western Artists nomination and two of her CDs of Cowboy Poetry have received top five and top
ten nominations respectively from the AWA and from the Western Poets Circle. Debra has been featured
in USA Weekend and holds the honor of being the Resident Poet of Cowboys-n-Cowgirls.com. She and
her friends have a book of poetry and stories due out this summer that honors the Oklahoma State Centennial.
Also due out in book form in 2007 is Debra’s syndicated column Riding Drag. Her column features
Western poetry and vignette style stories and is published by Morris Publishing in their Trade West
Publications, Oklahoma’s premiere equine paper Southwest Horse Trader and is syndicated to additional
rural papers across the U.S.
Debra is a federal and tribal registered Cherokee and also writes Native American poetry. Her new CD
Buffalo Grass is scheduled out in summer of 2007. Her Cherokee art and beadwork is in private
collections around the world.
Her Cowboy Poetry and columns are put together in several groupings that are educational in nature. She
and her Cowboy Friends have several presentations that can be tailored to fit specific school curriculums.
They also have a presentation with the Buckaroo Puppets that carries an anti-alcohol and anti-drug message.
She, along with Robert and Angela Beene head the Cowboys for Western Literature in the Libraries Project
which helps small rural libraries, schools and universities to acquire collection of Cowboy Poetry.
Debra owns and operates Old Yellow Slicker Productions. She and her associates at Lazy B Productions
are happy to help groups and individuals produce a Western Event. They can tailor a show to fit any budget,
from a one man show to a full festival.
