Old School Reviews

Daikatana

I would like to start off this review by saying: Do not waste your money on Daikatana. I know thats a pretty harsh way to start off a review, but I have never been more serious in my life. And I'm a pretty serious guy(most of the time).

Daikatana for the PC was not the worst game by any means, but it was certainly not a good game. Underneath the bugs and the save issues and the poor AI, there was a respectful glitter of effort. At least the PC version has a soul. When I heard they were developing a port for the N64, I'll admit I was a little excited. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to fix the bugs and turn a flawed game into a fun N64 shooter. You can imagine my reaction when I saw the first 2 seconds of the opening cutscene.

Daikatana for the N64 makes the PC version seem like a epic masterpiece for the ages(whatever the hell that means). Everything in this game is bad. From the graphics to the gameplay to the little bits of sound here and there.

The sound is the worst, and especially the music. The music is pure torture. Every level is the same song repeating over and over. Its pretty bad. The weapons sound all sound mostly the same and your character apparently floats through each level, because I sure as hell don't hear any footsteps underneath him.

Daikatana for the N64 is about as bad as a game gets. Do yourself a favor and stay as far away as you can from this game. It will result in a longer, healthier life.

Perfect Dark

When you think of classic FPS shooters, whether your a hardcore gamer or not, Perfect Dark should be one of the first few games that should appear in your head. If its not one of the first 10 that you think of, please burn every game and system you own and never play games ever again. Perfect Dark may not have been the first shooter or the most unique shooter, but it definitely revolutionized FPS gaming with its multiplayer.

Looking back at the game, the graphics may have significantly dated compared to todays standards, but they really pushed the graphics for the time. Its definitely one of the best looking N64 games for sure. The sound was top notch, too. Perfect Dark was one of the first 64 games to have a full soundtrack and full voice cast, which was a big improvement over Goldeneyes subtitles.

The gameplay was the clear high point of the game.  The controls were smooth and comfortable and the game was just a lot of fun to play. No glitches or clunky controls or even faulty AI. Just simple, amazing, fun gameplay that never got boring. And, of course, almost every multiplayer mode designed in this game are still being used in most multiplayer FPS games to this day. The game offered deathmatch, co-op, challenges, and was the first FPS to make excellent use of enemy bots for multiplayer.

Perfect Dark is still a great game and if haven't played it all this time and your an FPS lover. Please find a way to play it. Even if the dated graphics and sound irritate you, It would be a sin to pass this classic game up.
