2009 Dinner
A total of 94 ORs and OC guests attended the 2009 dinner at the East India Club on Tuesday May 12. Attendees include at least five fathers and sons, one mother and daughter and three former Housemasters – David Summerscale, Ian Blake and Hugh Gammell. Guests included the Headmaster and OCs from D, P, W, V and B. Hon Secretary Nick Fitzherbert R75 displayed a map pinpointing the locations of the 15 per cent of the membership based overseas, before announcing that Nigel Donovan R73 and Peter Willis Fleming R76 had come all the way from America and Jeremy Agace R58 , Alistair Curry R82 and Stewart Hawkins R56 had travelled from Monaco, Germany and France respectively. Nick also noted high attendance by younger members, especially from 2007 and 2002 (ten from each) and thanked those members who had contributed towards their free and half-price places.
The tables in the dining room bore names such as Billy Elliot, Notes on a Scandal and Revolutionary Road – all films produced by special guest David Thompson R67, who was Head of BBC Films until 2008. His speech was a perfectly balanced mix of humour, history and insight, laced with self-deprecating reminiscences. His career as an impresario, for instance, got off to a bad start while at Charterhouse when he told Duckite friends called Gabriel and Rutherford that their pop group wasn’t very good! On the serious side he spoke of the importance of risk and intensity to any kind of creative activity and how David Summerscale had provided an early influence in this respect. Most memorable of all, however, will probably be his references to instructions from the matron and the cost of the digital removal of Tim Roth’s underpants!

Old Robinite Association Dinner 2008
We had another fantastic evening at London's East India Club on Tuesday May 13th . More than 80 ORs and OC guests attended and Peter James (R67) gave a terrific speech with fascinating insights into his life as a best-selling crime novelist and film maker. The tables were all named after Peter's novels, so Secretary Nick Fitzherbert apologised in advance to those who found themselves sitting at 'Looking Good Dead' or 'Dead Simple'!
We also had many fresh faces in attendance, with a group of 1950s ORs rounded up by Alan Evans and Robert Fisher, and a bunch of the 60s generation came to see their old friend Peter James. The important thing is that there is every indication that many will be returning next year, together with more old friends.

2006 Dinner
The annual ORA dinner was held at the The East India Club in London's St James Square on Tuesday May 9th. It was a new venue for 2006 as we needed more space - 100 ORs and OC guests turned up and everyone had a fantastic time!
John Peters, a member of Brooke Hall for some 35 years, was our special guest and he received a standing ovation for a talk - based on reminiscences of the House and the school - that was delivered with great warmth and passion.
Will Lane proved again that he has already mastered the art of the Housemaster's speech and James Harper summed up exactly what so many of us have been thinking about the sad loss of our OR friend Osei Adomakoh, who was killed in the Nigerian air crash last autumn. What made it al the more special was that we were joined for the evening by both Osei's brother Louis and his widow Penny.
Attendees spanned the genarations from 1945 to 2005 and they came from far and wide - Nigel Donovan and Peter Willis Fleming flew in from the USA and Nick Freeland travelled from France. And once again we had a full turn out of Housemasters - David Summerscale and Ian Blake both came fro pre-dinner drinks and Hugh Gammell now sees himself as a fully-fledged, OR tie-wearing Old Robinite!
The full list of attendees follows and pictures of the evening - with many OR ties on show - are spread throughout the site.
Stand by for the 2007 dinner - which will be one week later that usual - the third Tuesday in May - due to the timing of the May Day bank holiday

2005 Dinner
Last year's dinner was held at the Travellers Club, 106 Pall Mall, London SW1 on Tuesday May 10.

Housemasters past and present - David Summerscale, Ian Blake, Will Lane and Hugh Gammell, as Ian presents the new Housematers name board to Will. The board will hang between the private side and boys' side in Robinites. (Pic B05a)
100 years of Robinites
This was another special year for the ORA Dinner as it marked the Centenary of the House. We were delighted, therefore, that the current Headmaster, The Revd John Witheridge attended as our special guest.
The Headmaster wrote to the Hon Secretary on May 11 as follows:
Thank you so much for a splendid dinner at The Travellers! Everything had been organised beautifully. I thought the atmosphere was as cheerful and positive as any I can remember. A great occasion for Robinites and I felt priveleged to be part of it.
Welcoming Housemasters past & present
We were also very pleased to welcome Will Lane for the first time as Housemaster and he was accompanied by the house tutor Martin Crosby and the Head Monitor Richard Greensmith.
As it is the Centenary year we also invited Housemasters from previous generations. And it was fantastic to see David Summerscale (70-75), Ian Blake (76-91) and Hugh Gammell (91-04) all attending the dinner and all on great form.
Thanks
Special thanks go to Nigel Legge (75) for providing the beautiful venue, Ivan Fitzherbert (77) for assistance with the mailing, Hugh Marsden (60) who provided mints at the end of the meal and Richard Peskin (62) and Bob Lacey Thompson (40) who did not attend but each sent a contribution to the evening.
Looking to the future
There was discussion at the AGM and over dinner about how to encourage other members to contribute to the the dinner, in particular helping to fund free places for recent leavers. Nigel Legge and Will Lane also talked of their joint ambition to build a fund over time that could be used if and when current Robinite parents face short-term difficulties in finding the fees. If any members would like to talk further on this matter please contact Nick Fitzherbert.
Members attending
ORs attending this year spanned 65 years and came from far wide. David Summerscale was just back from Sri Lanka, David Traill (75) flew down from Edinburgh and Whitney Vosburgh (74) and Nigel Donovan (73) both came from America. Many people had not seen each other for 30 years or more and, thanks to the OR updates that have been coming in this year, we were all able to share a lot of news.
