This small site is about underground comix from the 60s & 70s hippie/counterculture movement, sometimes called UGs or u-comix. I am an avid second-generation collector of u-comix (I wasn't there, man), and I built this site to house research information and images of my collection. In February 2006, I served as Assistant Editor for Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide (FUG) and have contributed database work and an article about Maus' evolution in u-comix to the FUG Supplement due out in 2008. I have also published an article in GPAnalysis' newsletter on 'EC-esque Undergrounds.'## These daze, I post occassionally as oldmilwaukee6er on two message boards (CGC & comicspriceguide).
I refer to this site as The Bayou Collection of Underground Comix because I began assembling these books while living and working in the environs south of Baton Rouge, LA. In 2008 I relocated to Milwaukee, WI, & it was during the move that I began specializing in high-grade, first printing Freak Brothers, Zap Comix, American Splendor, & Robert Crumb comix (but see also the image galleries). Generally, I like anthology comix like Zap, Bijou Funnies, Snarf & Yellow Dog. I don't specifically collect Bode, Corben, mini comix, or tabloids; but I maintain an open mind & appreciate most everything. Right now my grail is Zap Comix #2 (1st state; 'Heads First' miscut) in VF or better.
I’m what Southerners call a Yankee- raised with a slow Midwestern kindness, educated in the forests of Montana, and hardened by the hurricanes that batter Louisiana's diminishing coast. I have worked throughout this land on a variety of environmental projects, yet I still lack a strong sense of "place." Everywhere I go - whenever I open my mouth - people say to me "you're not from around here, are you?" Basically, I have a strong passion for my work, but some moments of the day you are just as likely to catch me playing hooky on the disc golf course (avid player) or rockin' some local music.
For me it all started in Billings, MT (c. 2000). A friend, knowing I was into comics, gave me a stack of UG's in a 1-gallon ziplock bag - mostly Freak Brothers, Fat Freddy's Cat, and a Mr Natural. For a long time I tried to learn more about them- printings, why they weren't in Overstreet, etc., but to no avail. I watched eBay auctions for Freak Brothers & Zap Comix (but never bid) for over 2 years trying to learn which were early printings. But it was not helping... I kept waiting for a 35-cent Freak Bros. #1! Fast forward... one day, now in
