Prior to the 1920’s, tobacco farmers in Tennessee hand split tobacco sticks from Hickory, Oak, Ash or Chestnut logs. About 50 to 100 sticks were produced using very hard labor from each log. In the 1920’s, machinery was used to produce the sticks.

The sticks were used to hang the harvested tobacco leaves in the drying barn to dry.

In recent years more and more small tobacco farms in Tennessee are going out of the tobacco business and the sticks are unused after 50 to 100 years or more of use. These days, tobacco sticks are becoming more and more scarce.

We have found a source of Oak and Hickory tobacco sticks which were made at least 60 to 70 years ago and were sitting in an old barn in Middle Tennessee. These sticks make wonderful, strong, lightweight hiking staffs with the natural beauty of the old wood.

After cleaning them up and hand sanding we finish them with four coats of gloss lacquer giving them a beautiful antique furniture-like patina.

Many of the sticks have imperfections and insect damage on the wood which we have left in to demonstrate the character of the antique wood.

Each hiking stick has a hand carved, poly-wound hand grip and a lanyard.
