The Bucket List

I *loved* this movie... I want to see it again!  Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman were amazing, I laughed uproariously in one part, and cried in another (or two).

The World's Fastest Indian

Seen for the second time...this time in a park, on a giant inflatable screen, with piles of other kiwis (who clapped for Burt Monroe!).  It was fabulous- I loved it the first time, and think it is my favourite NZ film ever...OK, I haven't watched many- because, er, I'm scared they will suck...but this was fantastic- the man was a genius, and the movie is brilliant.

Intro

We love movies!  We currently receive DVD's from a list (queue) of our choice, from www.fatso.co.nz

The best part about movies from Fatso is that they also have piles of documentaries.  Our kids love documentaires...we've seen them on everythign form Mummies to Snakes to Alexander the Great.  Because we haven't distinguished between "educational" and "fun", they make no distinction either...getting as excited about a Doco, as they would about a Sponge-Bob DVD or a Blockbuster.

Our philosophy on movies is that we generally choose movies that we are comfortable with the kids watching.  When we first started watching movies in this way (2005), we were a bit freaked about the reactions of the kids...however, it has been a good thing.  We no longer have to try to get them to their beds so we can watch something we like...they are happy to come and go as they please- because of this, they don't feel compelled to watch something possibly inappropriate (that they are not yet ready to see), because they are perfectly allowed to be there.

We also now have 2 TV's (in different rooms), so the kids are welcome to go watch something else if our movie doesn't appeal to them.

We watch movies on TV too, especially now that it's winter, and it's so nice to sit with a blanket together on the couch.

The kids and I like to play a game of saying a favourite bit of a movie, and the others guess which movie it's from.

Movies in February

27 Dresses

Fairly standard Chick-Flick…frightfully predictable, but instilling a sense of happiness when everything works out at the end.  Some nice touches, particularly at the end, and a pleasant way to while away an hour or two.

DSJ9 was aghast to find he was seeing a girlie movie instead of something more to his (mannish) tastes…but he enjoyed it.

Unaccompanied Minors

I thought it would be a bit dull, but enjoyed it immensely.  DDA5 was not at all interested, but enjoyed it too.  It smacked a little of a modern-day Breakfast Club, but lots of fun, and not toooooo cheesy.  Some aspects were brilliant, we all enjoyed the humour.  I didn’t like the bratty sister- once again, it seems Hollywood deemed it appropriate to use an older child, pretending to be a much younger one, but not taking into consideration that her dentition gave the game away.

We especially loved the dance routine, and the escape from the “cells”.

Fool’s Gold

We really enjoyed this movie.  It is one you can imagine anyone enjoying.  There were some lol moments, and a lot of action, and some thinking to do as well.  There were a couple of instances of (we felt) unnecessary gore…one in particular was simply disgusting.  I always enjoy Matthew McConaughey, and wasn’t disappointed.  I liked him with Kate Hudson in Failure to Launch too.

DDA5 didn’t really like it, found it boring, and ended up running round the theatre with the other littler kids.

Hairspray

We all throughly enjoyed this movie…loved John Travolta, loved the lead actress…loved the whole  thing…’I wish every day could be negroe day”.  J thought there was too much singing, and not enough story.

Movies in September

Over the Hedge

DSJ8's favourite kids movie atm...best bit is in the special features, a "Nature Doco" with Hammy and a box of boomerangs.

Sione's Wedding

A NZ film I really liked...lots of swearing (and mentions of drugs), but a cool movie all the same

Barbie: Magic of the Rainbow

DDA5 got this one for her birthday, along with the wings & wand karaoke microphone, and 6 of the fairy figurines from the movie.

Little Miss Sunshine

Seemed dodgy, and the kids weren't interested, so we didn't finish it...I've since heard it's really good, so I might try another time.

In Pursuit of Happiness

I loved this movie...Will Smith plays a nearly down-and-out Dad...I cried.  There is the coolest knock-knock joke *ever* at the end :0)

Karate Kid

Haven't seen it since I was little...totally loved it.  Also, got to watch it with my DS- so neat to enjoy an old movie togehter.

SpongeBob Squarepants: Fear of the Krabby Patty

Lots of episodes, which were neat, because it hasn't been on TV for a while...but it also had my all-time favourite line...

Mr Krabs: Spongebob- you look like a girl in that hat!

Spongebob: Am I pretty girl?

Ratatouille

We saw this at the theatre...it was interesting, a couple of lol moments- not set to be a classic or anything, but reasonable.

Shrek 2

Haven't seen it in ages, so it was very cool to revisit.  The kids put the subtitles on, which was cool -I think I got some things I hadn't before.

Music and Lyrics

Well, I love Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, so it was cool...the first movie we've watched semi-without kids in a long time.

Fat Albert

Not how I remembered it from childhood...but then again, maybe it was exactly- nice family movie.

White Chicks

Got to be in the mood for this one, but we were tonight :0)
