Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!

A School-Free Family, with a Nappy-Free Baby...

Fiction

Wild Swans

This was the first book I read after avoiding books for 9 years!  I was home sick, aged 22, for a week with Pneumonia and a friend gave this to me.  I didn't think I would ever read such a long book, but I was riveted- it was fascinating ,adn I couldn;t belibve I knew nothing about China's history.

Robert Ludlum

Always a great read, especially the Bourne books.

John Grisham

Love John Grisham...totally cool!  I've read all but the newest one.  My favourite was The Runaway Jury, but the movie was all wrong!

Alexander McCall-Smith

Reasonable books to pass the time, not super-exciting, but nice.  I've read all the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, and enjoyed them.  There was one superb quote which (when i find it) I will add here...I cracked up for ages.

Bridget Jones' Diary, Helen Fielding

Totally hilarious, the first one is *really* close to the movie.

My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult

I read this in Feb '07, and *loved* it...I was looking for new authors to enjoy, and I sure found one here...and as a bonus, I noticed yesterday there are *tonnes* of titles for me to read.

Fiona Kidman

Just found this author, thanks to a good friend...and am enjoying her- though the stories can take a long while to get going.  Have read Ricochet Baby and a collection of short stories ( A needle in the heart).

Tracey Chevalier

I liked Girl with a Pearl Earring, Falling Angels, and The Lady and the Unicorn

Joanne Harris

Loved Five Quarters of the Orange...Holy Fools, and Sleep, Pale Sister not so good, but liked them anyway.

I also totally love Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer and Agatha Chrsitie.

Dan Brown

Thoroughly enjoyed The Da Vinci Code (read before I saw the movie), then read Angels & Demons...every bit as good.  Just finished Deception Point (June) which was as the back cover told me "unputdownable".  Currently reading the last (that I know of) Digital Fortress...but doing so incredibly slowly, because I keep getting magazines!

Non-Fiction

Moving a Puddle, Sandra Dodd

Very enjoyable book of essays on Unschooling

Parenting a Free Child: An Unschooling Journey, Rue Kream

A good book to give to anyone at all.

The Natural Child, Jan Hunt

Wonderful book that really got me thinking about some things I had taken for granted.

Unconditional Parenting, Alfie Kohn

Still haven't finished it, but a good transition (probably) to more radical parenting

Preventing Childhood Eating Problems

Fabulous book, it's actually mainstream, with utterly radical ideas.

How Children Fail, John Holt

This is my favourite of John Holt's books...it is the book I have promised myself I'll re-read if I ever think school might be a good idea.

How Children Learn, John Holt

Teach Your Own, John Holt

Diaper Free Baby (The Getnle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene), Ingrid Bauer

This is a fantastic book, going in to loads of detail about EC/NIH in other countries, and basically has everything you could hope ot know about EC.

May 2007

The Villa of Reduced Circumstances, Alexander McCall-Smith

OK book, not hugely exciting, quite dull really- but has some amusing bits.

Diaper Free, Ingrid Bauer

Asked the library to get it in, and they did!  Awesome book, will buy it at some stage.

The house Within, Fiona Kidman

Very long book, but a good read- not precisely gripping, but interesting enough, and I enjoyed it.

June 2007

Dream Angus By Alexander McCall-Smith

Dull, thankfully short book...it passed the time, but not very well.

Deception Point by Dan Brown

Completely Brilliant book- I absolutely loved it, and was sad when it ended.  The man seems to know something about everything, and it's books like his that make me certain I could never write anything worth reading :0)

Life Learning Magazine

Not quite radical enough (lol), but a good read...and ncie to have something to curl up in bed with that is semi-about our lifestyle.

The Mother Magazine

Lots of ideals, intersting read...but probably a little too rigidly-natural to really resonate with me.  Tempted to buy a subscrription, but don;t think I need the guilt ;0)

July 2007

Digital Fortress by Dan Brown

Currently reading...didn't finish...Harry Potter came!  Will need to read some other time

Little Treasures Magazine

I was given a copy by a friend- I tend to stay clear of this sort of magazine now...but I was utterly blown away to see them say...most experts agree that "Time Out" should be used only as a last resort, and only after more positive methods have been used for at least 2 months!  They also mention Alfie Kohn as an author who does not believe in "Time Outs" and other punishments at all...I couldn't belive my eyes.

They also now have a section on natural remedies...hooray!  but there is still plenty I can't agree with (not least of which the ridiculous "how many hours a baby should sleep" bit)...so I won't be renewing my subscription (which lapsed some years ago).

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows By JK Rowling

with DSJ8...magic, magic book...loved it, so sad it's over :0(
