Caving in the sixties

Wolverhampton Caving Group; The Veterans!

This website is dedicated to that remarkable band of young men who founded Wolverhampton Caving Group in the mid 1960s, and especially to the memory of Roger Culpan 1941 - 2004

Beginnings!

In 1965 two groups of cavers met somewhere in the Derbyshire Dales. They soon discovered that they were all from the Wolverhampton area, and after a social get together on their return home it was decided that the groups would amalgamate and form a new club. So WCG came into being, and still survives (just!) to this day.

This website is an unashamedly nostalgic look back at the activities of a small caving group in the 1960s. Whilst others were busy trying to live the lifestyle of the so called "swinging sixties" our small group was dedicated to the exploration of caves and potholes in the Mendips, South Wales, Derbyshire, and in particular the Yorkshire Dales. Most of us were students or just into the post-student era of life. Some were hard cavers, others good reliable club members just out to enjoy a few hours underground each weekend. We were from a variety of backgrounds, but the lure of the subterranean world drew us together.

This love of caves was the common bond, as was a sense of fun and adventure. In the following pages you will find accounts of club activities from the sixties, details of the original members, and some rather ancient photographs salvaged from the ravages of time!
