Strawberry hermit crabs are different in quite a few ways as
compared to other species. First of all, you can tell a Strawberry
usually at first glance. They are usually large, are bright red, have
elongated eyes, and white dots all over their body, just like a
strawberry fruit. In my experience they are the sweetest and most laid
back species. The scientific name for these crabs is Coenobita
perlatus. I believe they come from Australia.
Care of Strawberry Crabs
Strawberries, unlike other land hermits, need exacting conditions.
Their humidity and temp must stay constant at 80/80 minimum. These guys
are used to tropical conditions and since most are large, I believe
they are harvested at an older age and have a harder time adjusting to
captivity. I just bought 2, one of which is a small (I got lucky), so I
might be able to put this to the test. The first 2 I had I lost both
due to bad molts. I have upgraded my conditions and added a large UTH
to the main tank in hopes that they were just too cold when they were
buried and will have better luck this time.
Straws also must absolutely have salt water (aquarium salt, not
table). They need a salt water pool deep enough to fully submerge in.
Without it they will die.
They also benefit more with a diet high in karotenes. Foods such as
carrots, sweet potatoes, mangos and watercress. It helps them keep
healthy and colorful.
Other than that, their care is basically the same as others.
Strawberry hermit crabs are best left to more experienced crabbers
since they are such a delicate and sensitive crabbie. If you decide to
try them, please do your research and make sure your conditions are
right BEFORE you bring them home :)
