Hermit Crab Shells
Hermit crabs must have adequate shells to move into as they molt and
grow. Below are pictures of popular shells that the crabbies seem to
like. Please stay away from the "fancy" painted shells. The paint chips
off in high humidity and the crabbies will eat it, and although it
might be non-toxic to use, it is toxic to the crabs. I will buy the
crabs in painted shells, but the only reason is because I know as soon
as he sees my shell pile, he will dump that painted one and get into a
much more suitable natural. After one day, the painted shell hits the

The next set of shells are
different types of nerites. I have made the images clickable so that
you can see the detail on them. These nerites tend to have very small
teeth at the opening but it shouldnt be a problem to file them down
smooth.
And last but not least, please take a look at this shell. Its got very
pretty coloring. Its called a bleeding tooth nerite. However, these are
not good for hermit crabs. If you look close on the inside you will
notice the two "teeth" the shell is named for. These little teeth could
rub the hermie and hurt him. You can click on the image to get a full
