New Outlets for our Cheese Things are really hopping at the creamery and at the farm. Dwain is staying really busy trying to do the farm work and get to some paid work too. I've been struggling with the same dilemnas, but the work is satisfying all the same. We have added a couple of markets to our schedule. We will be at the Spruce Pine Farmers Market on Wednesdays, 3-6pm, located on Oak Avenue. Also on Wednesdays, I will be at the West Asheville Farmers Market beside West End Bakery on Haywood Road from 3:30-6:30pm. We are recruiting restaurant and retail orders as well, so look for us around town!
OakMoon Creamery! Getting licensed and trying to operate a creamery, plus working the farm, plus working outside jobs, has kept Dwain and I really on the run. It is all good though, as we realize our dream of having the creamery going. We attended our first farmers market on May 19th, and were simply thrilled to be there. Since we believe in the old adage of "dance with the one that brung me" we are attending the Bakersville Farmers Market and the Madison Farmers and Artisan Market held in Mars Hill. Our resources are limited, and in order to be able to sell some cheese faster than if we'd waited for 60 days while the raw milk cheese ages, we had a tip to check into getting cheese curd from Holly Grove Farm. The fresh cheeses require that the milk be pasteurized prior to making, and we do not have a pasteurizer now, nor can we afford the several thousand dollars it would take to buy one at this time. So it has been quite a boon to be able to get curd from Holly Grove and get some cheese going out and money coming in. Thanks, Ron and Debbie! If you'd like to know more about Holly Grove Farm, be sure to check out their website at www.hollygrovecheese.com. While we have many friends in the farmers markets and local agriculture, we have encountered some disapproval and even pressure from another licensed creamery in the area. This is not totally unexpected, but is very unfair. We're a tough lot, however, so it will take more than intimidation and jealousy to get rid of us! I'll have pictures of the finished creamery and our planned open house this weekend soon.
Catching up I've been really trying to get caught up on a lot that needs doing around here before the creamery becomes my number one concern, but it seems I'm mostly milking goats and all tasks surrounding that one. Dwain has been trying to get the motor put back in his truck, and wow, have we missed having it on the road. Looks like it will finally roll again this weekend. Spring has been flirty and fickle this year, but seems she may be here to stay, FINALLY. We are expecting some cool nights, but mostly seasonal weather for the next few days. Hopefully that will give me time to get some kids moved into new pens. Only three more does are due to kid in May, then no more until late summer. In December, I adopted an elderly cat from the local shelter, and she's become a treasured addition. I took this really pretty picture of her and my Easter flowers sent by Rachel and Jason.
