Responsible Chinchilla Breeding

The Chinchillas are what is important in any country, but the NZ Chinchilla Pet and Breeding side is in serious need of a big change, updating and proper knowledge to be taken on board.  The problem here is rooted from the breeding (this is including the people who say they are not breeders but are still letting their females have babies).

It is up to Breeders to make sure they are up to date and are doing what is right for the Chinchilla, this in the form of a proper diet (see Diet & Nutrition), proper breeding care (see behaviour & care), producing chinchillas of TOP temperament and health, and not been ignorant about proper information/knowledge, ignoring information simply as not putting just any chin together for breeding for starters, in short and blunt terms there are serious guide lines to be followed when breeding these animals which has NOT been done in this country.   Only a few people in NZ are actually following the Breeding Guide Lines, the rest which is most people breeding Chinchillas (this is including people who say they are not breeders but are still letting their females have babies), are not.

After all it is like a chain, people buy off breeders or Pet Shops, expecting the info and advice passed on to be correct, they in turn then pass on this to others or they end up breeding themselves then passing it on to others who buy off them.  Bad Habits are very hard to break especially when those habits are been done by a large chain of people, and it is thought to be right.

If it continues to be ignored problems will only get worse, problems which ARE there that are either noticed or unnoticed, known about or not.  Allot of breeders here are in denial.

It is about Prevention and Foresight.  Doing what is right to benefit the Chinchilla and future Chins.  They cannot speak for themselves, they have no voice and there are no standards set to be followed in NZ which makes them more vulnerable.

About the New Zealand Chinchilla Rescue

The NZ Chinchilla Rescue is a privately operated service, 100% Volunteer dedicated to the education, care and well being of the Chinchilla.  The main Branch of the Rescue is based in Tokoroa, New Zealand, which at this stage covers the whole of New Zealand.

It operates 24 hours a day all throughout the year, also providing other services to
benefit the Chinchilla.  We provide complete care for ANY Chinchilla, any age and/or condition that are abandoned, unwanted, neglected and even if people just cannot sell them or look after them for whatever reason that might be. This Rescue also has a NO KILL policy.

Since 2004 this Rescue has had over 600 Chinchillas, many needing constant medical care for days and nights, and all needing behaviour
rehabilitation.

All Chinchillas we give our time to get to know each Chin individually and in the process evaluate their personality, which enables us to match each chin with the best home and environment for that Chinchilla. Any health problems are addressed while under care of the Rescue they are not passed on knowingly for new Owners to care for, ones that are ill and cannot be re-homed i.e. Malocclusion, Serious Behavioural problems, are kept here permanently to their lives happily and peacefully with us, as comfortable as we can possibly make them.  Once the Chinchilla has recovered in both spirit and body, they are then adopted to loving forever homes.  They are NOT adopted out for Breeding nor to Pet Shops, and there is NO negotiation in this.

The NZ Chinchilla Rescue does NOT receive funding and gets very little donations of any kind including in it's Education Program which requires separate funding, but we do need funding to help cover Vet fees and the day to day running costs such as traveling, cages, food, power etc, once again it is 100% Volunteer.  Despite of the money shortage NO Chinchilla is ever turned away or Questioned as to whether it can be taken in.

Occasionally we get other non-chinny animals in also including Cats, Rabbits and Birds, any animal is welcomed and treated with any care they may need following the same policy we have for the Chinchillas.

We also now run an Education Program including this site, providing Adults and Children a chance to see, touch and over all learn about these wonderful darlings.  For Children it includes School visits and we have games and other activities providing a fun out look on Chinchillas and how important it is to care for such a life.  Chosen Chinchillas involved in this program are well socialised and have wonderful human orientated temperments so that any stress is eliminated on them in this program, the chosen Chinchillas enjoy it just as much and they benefit from all the love and attention. More about this program will be up soon :)
