46th Precinct
Explorers

WELCOME TO THE 46th PRECINCT EXPLORERS INFORMATION PAGE

Exploring is a division of Learning for Life, for young people age 14 to 20. Its purpose is to promote character building, citizenship, and fitness.

As with many high-visibility careers, Law Enforcement is often viewed as a glamorous profession, but it is frequently distorted by the media. Exploring seeks to match interested youth with adults who are willing to share their knowledge and skill. Law Enforcement Exploring is designed to educate young people about law enforcement, community service, and much more.

The 46th Precinct Law Enforcement Explorer Post (#2046) was started in April of 1994, with P.O. Warren Thompson as Post Advisor, and six Explorers. Today, P.O. Thompson advises 20 registered members. Meetings are held at the 46 Precinct station house on alternate Tuesdays at 5:00PM. Members of this post are required to maintain a C average in school, and must submit their report cards for verification.

Each meeting includes training in various aspects of policing. Topics include arrest and search techniques, crime prevention, substance abuse and prevention, New York State law, fingerprinting, and more. Field trips and community service are also a part of this post. Explorers also volunteer in the community; this helps the Explorer to "get a feel" for a Police Officer's job.
