 INSTITUTIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

We also extend our outreach program to institutions of higher learning like: YMCA Kampala Branch, Makerere University, Mukono University, Ndejje University, Bugema University and Kyambogo University. Here we share a platform of ideas that are both based of research and literature review, communication and behavior change.
All the above institutions have their set committees under a youth empowerment project that also exists under the RHU projects and offers the youth clubs in these institutions an environment for capacity building and practice of better leadership skills. Our institutional outreach program encompasses a module in adolescent sexual and reproductive health based approach to the unmet needs for quality SRH services. We reach out to these institutions through their student leaders and administrator and we use basketball as an activity of mobilizing the students.

SPORTS OUTREACH PROJECT:

We normally carry out basketball clinics in order to build and develop the skills of the various young people who have taken up basketball as a sport of their choice and would like to make it to the national scene. These skills are meant for all participants thus we charge no fees with all training expenses charged on the club. Various Youths from all over Kampala come to our training venues and attend skills training sessions and thus become affiliate members to the club and if they are not committed to other clubs, they can become full members.
The skills trainings are carried out by either internal or external facilitators who at times are the team coaches, trainers or captains. We welcome all skilled and talented members who would like to share their experiences with to participate in the trainings.

We organize and participate in various tournaments all year round, both national and international. However we have one very important and remarkable tournament that is the “NATIONAL ANTI AIDS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT” always abbreviated as NAAB Tournament. The aim of this tournament is to bring together several institutions, schools, communities and basketball club with a goal of passing meaningful messages to those who attend the tournament and at the same time fundraise for the disadvantaged young persons in the country. The tournament has so far been held twice and its third edition is slotted for 2008.Among the tournaments we have participated in include the Makerere open basketball tournament organized by Makerere university, st Michael invitational basketball tournament organized by st Michael high school in Sonde Mukono district, ABE Lincoln Memorial tournament – Kampala, Uganda, Kenyatta Day Memorial tournament – Kisumu, Kenya, YMCA Open gala – YMCA, Kampala, Allen Houston Community tournament – Kampala, Uganda.
Hoops for Hope Charity basketball tournament – Kampala, Uganda.

The Biston planets have been very much interested in young children especially the orphans and the street children. Although we have never approached the street children, we have successfully mapped the orphanage homes like: Watoto babies home, Ssanyu babies home, Kirinya Babies home, etc. we expect to reach all homes in Kawempe division, nakawa division and bweyogerere. In order for this exercise to be possible, we network with the youth corner staff members of RHU, CDFU, and other organizations that are not profit oriented and work within the reproductive health concept. Below are pictorial illustrations of our home visits within Kampala. Watoto babies’ home was the home.
