About Us Since its inception in 1973, the NUS Chinese Orchestra (NUSCO) has progressed to become an active amateur orchestra in the local Chinese music scene and is presently under the auspices of The Centre for the Arts , National University of Singapore. Under the baton of our Resident Conductor Mr. Lum Yan Sing, as well as the patient tutelage of professional instructors, members of NUSCO have been groomed to promote the love of Chinese music through public concerts and performances in various schools and organisations. Besides the usual repertoire of ditties, folk music and local compositions, NUSCO has eagerly ventured into ensemble pieces, fantasias, capriccios and other technically demanding orchestra pieces such as the 'Great Wall Capriccio', 'Reminiscences of Yun Zhou Xi', 'The Story of Lan Hua Hua', 'Reminiscences of Yunnan', the 'Man Jiang Hong Erhu Concerto', 'Maiden Mochou - A Fantasia', 'Legend of the Dragon' and the 'Mohe Tribe Suite'. To enrich our musical experience, NUSCO has traveled to foreign lands on musical exchange programmes and concert tours. In 1983 and 1987, we held performances in Thailand and Hong Kong respectively. The Orchestra visited China in 1991 and had the wonderful opportunity to interact with renowned Chinese musicians and composers of Beijing. Honoured with an invitation in 1995, NUSCO participated in a cultural exchange programme to Romania with the Bucharest Youth Philharmonic Society. In 1998, the Orchestra once again visited China, this time traveling to Xi'an for cultural exchange and performance. In June 2002, a 17-member ensemble went on a concert tour to Mauritius (where they held a joint concert with the Mauritius School of Chinese Music), Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, before participating in South Africa's prestigious National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. In Dec 2003, 13 of our members participated in the first international tour organised by CFA, visiting and performing across three South Indian states with four other dance groups. Our mission: - To promote greater appreciation of music, in particular, Chinese music in NUS - To scale new musical heights in our continued striving for excellence - To provide opportunities for every member to learn and upgrade their skills in music - To foster close ties and team spirit among its undergraduate and graduate
