Simply my favorite place to shop in all of Catarina, Vivero Ecologico Gallina has the widest selection of local plants and many unique ones as well.

The owners are very knowledgeable and they love to show off all their plants. Each time we visit, we get a tour of the place and there's new things to see every time.

Some parts of their land look similar to a stateside nursery and other areas look like wild jungle complete with howler monkeys. To get to this incredible nursery, just make a left at the Welcome to Catarina sign on Hwy 18, then take the first left and follow the dirt road to the nursery.

Here are just a few of their exotics.

While Nicaragua has many different flowers, few of them have a strong fragrance. I had been considering getting seeds for some honeysuckle vines until I came across this plant at the nursery today. It smells just like honeysuckle but is growing on a bamboo like plant and it's flowers are about 8 inches long.

Here's just one of many different bananas that grow in this country. I was surprised at how small the plant was, only about 4 feet tall, to be bearing so much fruit. Most bananas I've seen down here also have their fruit hanging down from the tree rather than pointing up.

We've got regular bananas and manzanitas (small bananas with a slight apple taste) growing on our finca, but I'm pretty sure we'll have to add some of these as well!

This one reminded me of  a devil's foot. It's vivid red and will make quite a statement in my landscaping. Today's trip to the nursery only set us back $15 and we picked up garlic grass, licorice basil, jasmine, three kinds of pepper plants, a cocoa tree, thyme, rosemary, and vervain.

Being able to walk through a lush, tropical nursery and pick whatever my heart desires without spending hardly any money at all is part of what makes Nicaragua such a paradise!
