Known for being the only radio station in the United States and probably in the whole world to excessively use station ID jingles, WLNG 92.1 in Long Island is proud to be bearing this year’s Hall of Famer by the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) – Mr. Paul Sidney. The announcement was made at 9:00 AM on May 30, 2007. Paul Sidney will join other five Hall of Fame nominees from New York markets Rochester/Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, and New York City. Paul Sidney has been known as broadcaster and an entrepreneur. His knack for PAMS radio jingles transformed the station into one of the most successful in the country. Sidney integrated the use of PAMS jingles into their musical and talk programs. The station airs jingles after every song. Paul Sidney also emphasized the need to connect with the listeners through community involvement. And in the past years, WLNG earned prestigious awards such as the Marconi Excellence in Community Service recognition. The success of the station is not just attributed to his innate love for broadcasting and his large collection of PAMS jingles that earned him a 2002 New Yorker Magazine Talk of the Town quote. His revolutionary marketing strategies for WLNG that included a utility vehicle called the Friendly Giant boosted the station’s rating. The Friendly Giant is actually a bus with a side panel bearing the famous motto: “Locally, no one pedals harder for your business and your community’s concerns”. Under this was a large picture of WLNG’s air staff riding on a 10 seater bicycle.

The Old WLNG Bus WLNG today has now made a reputation as the East End’s reliable source for news, information and oldies music. WLNG will continue to be serving the people of Long Island, thanks to the hands and mind of broadcast genius Paul Sidney who definitely deserves the 2007 NYSBA Hall of Fame.
