If you are a big fan of movie trailers, you sure are so totally blown away by those deep cracky old man’s voice that are used by many of the movie primers. In reality though, the guys behind these movie trailers aren’t essentially old, well with the exception of others. If you are gifted voiceover artist, it will not be problem though. You can attain those deep bass, low pitched, thundering movie trailer voiceover without the need of hiring professional VOs. In this article, you will find three ways on how to achieve that. First is the technical way. Some voiceover artists were able to trick others by lowering their pitch. Some are still convincing. If you fall on the second situation you might consider our second approach, but before that here is the first. If your station needs a new set of radio station IDs or other imaging stuffs like promos or something, you can get your air talent who can blow a convincing old man’s voice or better yet have yourself. Now using, your Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (earlier versions are not qualified) or Adobe Audition software (any versions will do), what? – record your voice right away. It is best to save first your material to WAV format. Don’t use MP3. Then lower the pitch of the waveform to a desired level. Too low of a pitch and it will sound like a dragging tape. Just enough lowering of pitch will do. But then again if the VO itself is convincing enough you don’t need to decrease its pitch. The secret to achieving a movie trailer voiceover is to give your raw VO material a punch. You can do this by adjusting some Parametric Equalizers (you know where it’s at). There are a lot of presets so choose one that is right for the material. After that give your VO materials lots of compression, in this stage, your VO will start to sound a little cracky now. Then do some Hard Limiting at .4 or .5 – that should give enough punch and leveling. And presto! There goes your movie trailer sounding voiceover. If you are most guys, who just don’t have the luck in the world to have a deep voice or your radio station is not just ready to hire big time voiceover artist, consider our second way. This is a lot less expensive but time consuming and this is perfect for those high pitched Justin Timberlake voice timber. Just smoke a lot, drink a lot, sleep less and hey by a few days, you’re gonna love how your voice really cracks.
Seriously, if you are like most radio program directors who want fast and real results, you can avail the services of many seasoned voiceovers guys. You can take our first and third ways effectively, but we doubt with the second one.
