THE CHURCHES

There are six churches in Lowton


There are six Churches in Lowton, two Church of England (Anglican) and one each Roman Catholic, Independent Methodist and Methodist and the Lowton Community Church. They work together as one in many ways especially the work in Romania. The Parish Priest at St.Catherine's was once heard to comment "Here in Lowton we were well into ecumenicalism long before it became fashionable".

St.Luke's C of E Church

Saint Luke's is located on Slag Lane at it's junction with Church Lane and Stone Cross Lane, it is the oldest church in Lowton (also shown in this photograph is the Ram's Head Inn, said to be the first pub in Lowton)
The present Priest-in Charge is Revd. Michael Read

Saint Luke's Choir is one of the best choirs in the area and is well known in many parts of the country, having performed in many of the great cathedrals.

Saint Mary's Cof E Church


Located on Newton Road, Saint Mary's is the other of the Anglican Churches in Lowton

Saint Catherine's RC Church


Saint Catherine's Church is located again on Newton Road but this time at Lane Head the church has a lattice tower that is illuminated at night, the illuminated cross on top of the tower is visible for many miles the church is three penny bit shaped.
The Parish Priest is the Revd Father Bernard Edgar. The church has an excellent regularly updated web site that is well worth a visit at

Lane Head Methodist Church       Lane Head chapel is again on Newton Road at the traffic lights with the Winwick Lane junction. This church is in the Makerfield Methodist Circuit. The Minister is the Revd. John Payne. The telephone number for the circuit office at Earlestown is 01925 - 222109.

Independent Methodist Church 

Located on Newton Road just about 100 yards past Saint Mary's but on the other side of the road in the direction of Leigh. It is a very active Church further details can be found on the web site at www.lowtonimchurch.org.uk
There is a large private car park at the rear access via Chapel Walk.
The main Sunday service is at 10-45 a.m. singing led by the excellent Worship Band usually starts at 10-30 a.m.
The Church president is Bill Hampson who has recently be made a Freeman of the Borough of Wigan. Also Deputy Lord Lutenant of Gtr Manchester
