LOCAL MYTHS

Stonecross Roundabout

Many new residents beleive that the large lump of stone in the centre of the roundabout is the base of the Stone Cross that gives the lane it's name. This is not true this stone was put there in the year 2001 by the developers of the industrial estate. The real Stone preaching cross that gave the lane it's name is beleived now to be under St.Luke's church.

Sandbach Crosses

It is thought that the Lowton Stone Cross could have been similar to these crosses in the Market place at Sandbach in Cheshire.

There is no focal point in Lowton so maybe the Wigan Council should erect a new stone cross at the St'Luke's end of Stone Cross Land, how about near the new Co-op, after all Golborne has the Town Square, Clock and Welcome notice board.

Any information about our Stone Cross please e-mail the webmaster at lowton@blueyonder.co.uk

Stonecross Pub and Travel Inn

This pub and Travel Inn are located at the East Lancashire Road end of Stonecross Lane North and straddles the Lowton-Golborne boundary.
The Group that it belongs to advertise it in the premises, on the internet and in their advertising as being located at "Haydock".
It should be noted that is is in the region of five miles from Lowton/Golborne to Haydock.
It has been suggested this is because there is a Travel LODGE and a Holiday INN at Haydock.

They have not responded to the e-mail we sent to them pointing out that this hotel was NOT in Haydock
