WELCOME TO THE LOWTON WEB SITE

WELCOME to the Lowton Community Web Site

WELCOME to the community web site for the townships of Lowton Saint Luke's, Lowton Saint Mary's and Lowton Common and a little bit about the surrounding area.
The township or civil parish is in Lancashire. It was in the Winwick ecclesiastical parish and the Leigh poor law union. In 1933 the civil parish became part of the Golborne Urban District. In 1974 the Golborne Urban District was dissolved and it's area divided, most if it including Lowton becoming part of the Wigan Metropolitan Borough.

This site is provided and maintained by volunteers, it has no connection to any organisation, company or official body. It has no sponsors or advertising and is financed by donations from the volunteers. The team hope that the work they put in is of use to the site visitors and would be pleased to receive feedback via the contact form. If you would like to submit photographs for inclusion to the site please send us your e-mail address and we will forward you the e-mail address that you can send the photographs to. (This is to prevent spam e-mails)

If you have any questions about Lowton and district please ask us and we will try to answer them for you or put you in contact with someone who can.

LOWTON IS PART OF WIGAN, LANCASHIRE

Just because the post office have chosen to give us a

Warrington POSTAL address and post code does not make us part of Warrington. In fact a few years ago they wanted to change it to Newton-le-Willows. Merseyside.

Look at the photograph at the top of this page. We are part of the Metropolitain Borough of
WIGAN, Lancashire. That is why we pay our council tax to WIGAN and vote in the WIGAN
elections.

We are NOT and never have been in the
county of Cheshire !!

Be loyal to our red rose and put Lancashire in your address.

Double click on the Lancashire Rose below to read the full story and avoid confusion, this information is provided by our friends at Friends of Real Lancashire

Did you know that the administrative

county of Greater Manchester was abolished over 20 years ago !

 LANCASHIRE DAY - 27th NOVEMBER
Click on the rose for more details and to visit the Friends of Real Lancashire web site.

1986

The councils of the Metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester and Merseyside were abolished and replaced with a number of unitary authorities. Greater Manchester and Merseyside thereby ceased to be administrative areas.

1996

Other administrative counties were abolished, e.g. Avon, Cleveland and Humberside. To take account of this the Royal Mail eliminated administrative counties from postal addresses, but stated that the inclusion of a geographical county name would not affect the way that they handled the mail providing the Post Code is included. This means that if you live in the real county you can include Lancashire in your address no matter which administrative area or 'county' you live in.

LANCASHIRE TEA IS NOW STOCKED AT (LONDIS) LOWTON POST OFFICE

Lowton is in Lancs ................................. Thanks !!!!!
